Besides being heavily abused by self abusers, this will have a few legitimate functions.
All those streaming events that happened a while back.. You know the ones you wanted to watch, but for some reason couldn't will be that much easier to find.
Also, sites that archive important Social events on video will get more hits. I know I have given up after trolling through a few dozen pages of google results. Hopefully you can find a few sources so you won't have to settle for one level of quality, like for JFK's assasination or whatever you need for whatever you need it for.
Really though, porn. Lots of p0rn. Sex is still in the top five searches...
Well in my experience both are rather slow IDEs. So maybe we can get one that is twice is slow, wouldn't that be a great step forward?
Honestly though eclipse is a good tool, maybe borland moving Jbuilder to it will actually speed up the environment.
If anyone has any tricks to speed up the JVM so it doesn't drag ass I'd appreciate it being posted.
As a side note, anyone else come across the old WOW32.dll access problem @ hex address problem recently? It has something to do with how the Borland C++ accessed windows. I was surprised when working on a computer to come across this. All you need is to upgrade Win2k to SP3 or better. Sad really, the admin of the system must have been sleeping for a couple years. Easy money, so no complaints.
No there isn't, however companies can make policies. One policy may be that owner ship of the licensce belongs to the company. Copies may only be checked out with permission of a manager.
My rational is that the company is the one who acquired the license, and they have the right use thier rights or not. They don't have to give personal copies to the user.
Running a GPL'd Program is not covered by the GPL. Only Distribution, Modification, and Copying. Someone who is given permission to run a program by a Licensee is not automatically a licensee. That is my interpretation of Section 0 of the GPL.
Well I don't know about your experiences with the board, but mine mostly positive.
I came across one after a flood took out my system. When everything is ruined you need to assess how much money you are willing to put into a computer. In my case it was free (thanks scot). I had problems with it, stability etc., but they have been cleared up. It was very picky as to driver install order.
I'll second that the sound is crap, but I don't really like onboard sound as a general rule. A SBLive can be had for ~20, so it is a non-issue, and it isn't hard to find a second hand sound card if you have friends.
I know it hated my 1400 MHz thunderbird, but it likes the XP1600+ I traded it for.
I haven't had any memory problems at all, I have 2 Crucial PC2100 sticks in it, running on max setting, and I have passed MemTest86 Loops over and again. It is Stable for me in Win2k and Debian, which is all I care about.
The real reason I like the system is that SiS chips are Linux friendly.
The bottom line is it wouldn't have ever been my first choice, but It didn't bite me in the end. I'm happy with it, and don't plan to upgrade for some time, and will keep this board in service until someone else needs it or it dies.
Please forgive my lack of subtlety, spelling/grammar, and tact. It's 3AM for me, then again this is/.
As you pointed out I do beleive that the 46-23-36 image does make girls think they have to be busty to be attractive. Look at the breast implant rates in this country. Further you need to keep in mind our greatest export, culture. How does this change ideals in other countries? Facial hair isn't beautiful now, damn I was growing fine peach fuzz... etc.
However there is a flipside to this coin that hasn't been mentioned. What about the girls who are thusly stacked? They start getting oggled at inappropriate ages (9-10), not just by peers but also grown men (admit it, you've caught yourself). Many of these girls grow up thinking they have to live up to these sex symbols/goddesses and get confused along the way.
Being called a whore for not dating/making out/etc. with someone isn't fair but I recall it happening. If they did do it, then they will be called a whore as well. What about the busty is dumb stereotype, I call it the Pamela Anderson Architype (maybe not fair, but sounds better than Anna Nicole Smith), but it has been around much longer.
A stereotype is harmful, no matter what. I have heard people say there are positive stereotypes, but I ask how is confining someone's personality to a set of generalities ever fair? Big dicks, good with money, math whizzes, etc... what if you don't live up to it? Do you want to battle expectations you have never fostered your whole life?
Interesting, but no need to bust out the tinfoil hat... yet*.
Instead of being paid by NYT isn't it equally probable that they read NYT (I think more so) and want to share with slashdot community which they belong to?
* I reserve my ceremonial headdress for government level conspiracies, and when corporations are involved
I disagree, I for one do play by (e)mail. I am currently playing 5 games of Civilization 3 (Using "Complete" boxed set, although its a part of the Play the World expansion) via e-Mail. Each game moves at different speeds, they vary from 3-4 moves a day to 1 move every two days.
It is slow, but allows me to keep my Civ3 addiction in check by getting my fix in installments.
I see a couple minor problems with your assumptions:
Mass storage: what about the flash ROM?
Video: Maybe not VGA or direct viewing, but depending on the router a serial port needs to be available. Just for text displayed elsewhere granted, but there is a certain amount of I/O programming involved.
The real question is if you were to program a firewall application to run on the router what would you need to include in it? TCP/IP Stack, Device Drivers, Memory Management, Storage support (*PROM/CF/etc), etc.
Eventually the program becomes an OS of sorts, look at Cisco IOS. Sure it *may* be more efficient to run, but is it efficient in terms of work done, and cost. Hardware can be purchased cheaply enough to support a little more overhead, but is still under $50. Do you think it is economical for Linksys/Dlink/whoever to build an os/program for something that will sell for so little?
Many cheap devices off load a great deal of processing to the CPU to keep hardware complexity down, and thereby the price. Cheap sound (AC'97) and so called winmodems do this.
This offloading is done in drivers usually, and becomes a problem for Linux only when there is no documentation. If you don't know what the device is expected to do let alone what your expected to do for it, how does it become the FOSS developers fault and not the manufaturers? Logically, it isn't.
Its funny, I just presented an article on UI prototyping tools yesterday. I included Hypercard, although even my sources from 1996 said it was dying then. I made note of it of course, but I didn't think it would be dead the next day.
I originally found this on ACM, but most of you probably don't have access so here it is:
Absolutely! I recently wrote a paper on the impact of the Internet on communication and education in Africa. Claims about the revolutions were made in nearly half of my sources, although none backed them up. The Internet will not fight revolutions on its own. However, there are problems in Africa that mean most revolutionaries won't have access either way. Illiteracy is a problem as well.
The problem, in Africa at least, is that computer penetration is low, and internet access is even lower. Not to mention that the cost of dialup in countries like Uganda is about $60, couple that with the phone line which runs about another US$40 (nearly as scarce as computers). The average person in some African nations makes less than US$1500 per year.
Internet cafes are cheaper, but are still out of reach of most people with charges averageing out to US$30 per month. Public terminals are often not fully featured, many act as kiosks. Access just isn't widely available outside of large urban centers.
There is also little African content on the Internet, and no one backbone network yet. Most ISPs use VSATs to link to the US backbone. The motivation and power of the Internet must be available or else it can't be harnessed for change.
When doing IT research I use the ACM Digital Library first, my school has a subsciption.
However depending on what specifically your looking for there are probably better DBs available. I've found that it really matters, for example I'm writing on KMSs, I find most hits under Business/Law Databases.
See what Databases a local university has access to, and try to take advantage. Take a zip or something so you can take copies along with you.
I agree with you 100%, this should be filed right next to "Corels Wordperfect port to linux (a la wine, for those not in the know) is a hack!" in the/. Database of obvious revelations
I don't know why the game maker wouldn't want to make their game good on all consoles. It seems that people would buy more of a game if it was good for the console they already own. I have a PS2 and really don't want to have to maintain 3 console game collections, but the GC is calling me. *Drool* Metroid, Zelda, and soon a "Final" Fantasy game.
Yeah, like the documentaion that comes with Windows is so wonderful that books aren't written to do the same things. Like the whole books for "Dummies" or the "Complete idiots guide to..." books didn't start with computer software. HA!
The fact is that good documentation is hard to write, and no one likes doing it. That is why people write documentation for pay.
He can't speak, but he can look stoic. Also does a halfway decent job with the kungfu scenes that aren't all cgi. In the first movie he almost looks like a hacker to boot.
if it was a:
while(i++ != 0xFFFFFFFF)
{
return 0
}
it would run once and then exit...
but because of the semi-colon right after the comparison, nothing is executed in the loop, it just loops, then once i is sufficiently large... it will return 0... although if it was void main, the return wouldn't be needed at all...:)
Exactly, talk's ancestry traces back before UNIX, if this is to be believed: http://www.postel.org/pipermail/internet-history/2 002-December/000205.html
And now MS will probably own it because of how b0n3d the IP system is in this country... Now I'm off to patent some naturally occuring amphibian DNA *just in case*:)

Programming is an interpretation/implementation of the logic of a Solution into an actual solution using a tool.
So, Logic is probably the third universal language you were looking for.
I hate to reply to an AC but...

Kinda like the Nova, but with broader implications in ones personal life :)

You see, you don't have to buy apps for opie, they are free.
Further some people have beliefs regaurding the morality of commercial software, and some people don't so a one size fits all doesn't work.
Besides there are near 7 billion people in the world, I'm sure we can afford some duplication of effort.

RIAA(R) members create, manufacture and/or distribute approximately 90% of all legitimate sound recordings produced and sold in the United States
I've heard lots of manufactured music lately, maybe thats why sells are down ;)

Well the structure was the point :) :)
Slashdot comment boxes need 2 things
1) The ability to tab
2) A compile button
Uh... Might want to rethink that velcro bit...

of course the *REAL* truth is that we got velcro from aliens
actually your wrong too...

I thought someone would comment on the rollerskates first, but neither is really practical :)
Forgot the tags
A skateboard :)
Although you could get roller skates of some kind as well.
