If you have a (real) degree in CS and you're doing web development, you're probably shortchanging yourself.
Probably true, but if you have a CS degree and you are NOT doing development, you are probably underpaid.

What crimes?
For the most part they followed the law.
Yes they did. They spent the prior twenty years lobbying to have the banking regulations that prevented them from taking outlandish risks with what was essentially other people's money, and then raked in massive personal gains when they produced short term gains in what was essentially a financial game of Russian roulette. The people in charge of things knew very well what was going on. I am not a banker and I can see how risky their behavior is, and these people are not idiots.
Their behavior has cost the country billions of dollars, and probably put tens of thousands out of work for personal gain with full knowledge of what would eventually happen. They should be dragged from their mansions and shot in the back of the head with a cheap Luger as a object lesson in social justice. How many times must the country be fleeced by Enron style corporate shenanigans before we realize that treasonous activity is deliberately working against national interest in the boardroom or the battlefield?
Agreed. I was thinking only 51%? I currently toss roughly 65% of my logs out when I'm calculating how much human traffic we've received.
The interesting thing is that 51% is identifiable as bots. What about bots that are designed to emulate real users?
I mention that because I have written some bots that are designed to emulate users as closely as possible, so as to not be noticed by paranoid webmasters. Mine follow valid workflow scenarios, and even pause appropriate amounts of time between post backs, so I am fairly certain that they have gone unnoticed.
I don't think that I am more clever than the average hacker, so I am sure that others are doing this sort of thing, too.
It's just fallout from a blind belief that abstinence programs actually work, that "my child is a good child and nothing bad will happen to them" belief that haunts so many parents, a horrified thought whenever Planned Parenthood wants to give a talk at the schools
Which is in turn spawned (pun intended) by the aberrant idea that sex is bad, dirty, and only acceptable between consenting heterosexual married couples. Do you think there would be a problem giving kids sexual education if there wasn't a deranged stigma about sex in western society?
Sexual behavior is normal and healthy in teens and young adults. Just educate them about birth control and safe sex, and everything will be fine. They will figure out which holes to stuff things into, regardless of your puritanical controlling attempts to influence them into being sexless jeebus zombies.
Not only is he from the party that brought you Intelligent Design, he is the candidate that epitomizes anti-science..
He wants to call Democrats anti-science, fine with me. As long as we are engaging in irrational nonsensical twisting of the language, I will call him anti-religion.
His anti-religious views seek to crush all that is true and good about God. Everything he says is Jeblasphmey (New word I just made up, from Jesus and Blasphemy) His Jeblasphmey is also santic (deliberate, not a spelling error) because he worships the anti-santa (also deliberate, spelling Nazis GTFO). May the good lord protect us from Jeblasphmey and smite this anti-religionist in his Santorum hole.
Conservative idiots have been befouling clear thought and rational language for decades now, why should this fuck-up be any different?
Bullets have a number of problems, including hauling mass into space, and recoil. Recoil is something that is prohibitive and people in this thread aren't thinking about what this means.
Space, to borrow a phrase from HHGTTG, is big. In all likely hood, you will be shooting at things many miles away and traveling at high velocity. While a few 9mm pistol rounds will be quite dangerous to an unarmored space craft, the kick they will deliver will make long distance accuracy challenging. If you go this rout, you will probably have fire a single round, pause and correct the firing solution for the micro torques you have put on your ship, and then fire again. (Guns will probably have to be mounted on an axis that goes through your centroid, to maximize accuracy). It the target corrects course at all, your shots will likely miss.
Missiles would probably be better, since they can track and correct. They could be built to be fairly small, since they don't need massive engines to propel them through thick atmosphere. They could also extend electronic surveillance coverage by broadcasting what they see as they travel to a target. In Space, which we have agreed upon as big, this is an important thing to consider.
Parent post is best suggestion: High energy laser pulses to kill crew outright and leave space ship recoverable. Electromagnetic radiation is fast and accurate, which is important when ships are traveling at thousands of miles per hour.
Most space combat will be like modern air combat or sub warfare - You spend a lot of time and effort to see them before they see you.I could see AWACs space controller sats feeding info to drone carriers manned by humans. Ultimately, a lead sphere will end up being the unsinkable battleship, with a lot of soft dense armor to absorb kinetic rounds, and absorb EM weapons. Probably layers
if you are in an area experiencing earth tremors, and a seismologist tells you things are ok, do you believe him?
Nope, and neither should you. I hope you understand enough about the science that they engaging in to know they are just basically guessing the same as you are. They can discuss theories about tectonics and other interesting topics, but nothing they have discovered in their pursuit of knowledge has granted them any insight into what is going to happen in 5 minutes or 5 years.
Oh, come on. As it goes on, yes, it's not great. But I enjoyed the first three books the most out of the whole series. Maybe it's just you?
Possibly. I wanted to like the book, I had heard some interesting things about the series. I read an occasional sci-fi and fantasy book, and I really enjoy the good ones. I have to be honest though, the book was just really poorly written.
But personally, I don't like the idea of being an enabler of such behavior as we watch people destroy their own lives and that of their children through neglect.
But you are cool with telling other people how to live their lives, because you know what is best for them, I see.
I have never used drugs. I don't even like taking aspirin. I don't drink coffee or smoke and I rarely drink alcohol. But you know what? I am totally for decriminalization of drugs, because I believe that people should be allowed to make their own choices about how they live their lives. I know I am not wise enough of a person to be able tell people how to live their lives, and be correct. Part of living in a free country is allowing others to do things that we don't find to be appealing. You are failing to respect that other people might know what is best for themselves and govern their own lives.
Conservative, N - A concerned hypocrite who doesn't want government to interfere with their lives. They want the government to interfere with everyone else's.
Who is the bigger fool, the fool or the fool who follows him?
Honestly, knowing what modern science knows about earthquakes, if a seismologist makes any sort of clam about future earthquakes, why would you believe him?
I have had the same experience, and I can't work that out. People who like WoT don't defend attacks on the series with, 'No way, you are totally wrong, it is the best series ever!". They respond with, "Yeah it gets pretty awful in places, I sure hope this new guy can pick up the story". I feel kind of bad for the fans that they seem to be resigned to such a second rate story.
I read the first book, and it was the most horrible piece of shit that I have had the misfortune to read in years. The pacing was bad, the characters were forgettable, and the plot was meandering. On top of that, it read like Jordan just finished LoTR and really wanted to write something "just as awesome". The only reason I finished the first book was out of morbid curiosity: mainly, am I missing something? Why are fans reading 8 or 10 books of this stuff, when it is this awful?
I don't know if it's possible to do two boycotts against the same company simultaneously. If so, you would one do it?
I worked this out: First go fire up torrents of all the Sony artists you can find and download every Sony.mp3 on the net. Then, once you are done, go delete all the.mp3s and do the whole thing again. There you have just "Stolen" their entire catalog twice. That will show the corporate bastards that the Intarweb is not to be trifled with!
The really ironic thing is, supposedly laws are to supposed to remove 'might makes right' from disputes in a civilized society, and move disagreements to a courtroom where they can be decided in a rational way without bloodshed. If we have gotten to a place as a society where having more money allows one to buy legal victories with more lawyers, then there really isn't any reason for the fiscal/legal 'little guys' to not just pull out a gun and kill someone they disagree. The whole non-violent method of solving disputes goes straight out the window.
Interestingly enough, that is how radical and terrorist groups are created: the disenfranchisement of a group from society because it feels it has no voice. With no stakes in a society, there isn't any reason not to kill anyone who looks at you cross eyed.
I would love to see how how that worked out for them. If they want to succeed, I say we should just let them. Within a decade, I suspect that they would be asking for re-admission to the union.
The only evidence these guys were in China were the sources of the IP addresses they were using. They never went any further than doing a whois. So they know the hackers were using systems in China, but it's a very large assumption that's where the attacks actually originated.
Yeah, I love all these stories about 'China' hacking everything under the sun. If I were a black hat interested in breaking into a computer, the very first thing I would do is compromise a server in china to work through so if my hack were discovered it would be written off as 'more Chinese hackers'. I believe this is referred to as a false flag operation in spy trade craft. I find it hard to believe that all these governments and corporations are constantly being attacked by nothing but Chinese hackers.
I don't want my 12-year-old daughter to see that definition
Please don't perpetuate your prudery into the next generation.

Here is what is wrong with the country: The world doesn't revolve around you. You expect the rest of the world to censor things that you don't like. I don't like Rick Santorum. He is a bigoted asshole who isn't fit to lead a Sunday school kindergarten, let alone the most powerful country in the free world.
But you know what? I put up with his stupid bullshit, because that is the agreement we have here in America. He is free to say whatever he wants to. And people are free to mock his hateful views. That is one of the things that makes America a worthwhile country. We have room for everyone and their views. And it seems that a sizable number of people seem to think that Rick Santorum needs to be mocked. Don't like the content? Don't use the Internet. Nobody is forcing you to.
Also, is it that horrible to learn what anal sex is? Some people like putting their penis in other people's anus, oh no! Get over it.
I can't imagine the headache this will cause for air traffic controllers. They'll have these little blips on their radar... and if it's a small airport these things could make it less safe for local air traffic.
Oh, that isn't a problem, Don't even worry about it. They are all stealthy, so the air traffic controllers won't even see them!
They just need to avoid conference calls on unvetted conference systems, and in the clear networks, to organize this. I suspect they have figured this out by now.
They are a massive government organization. The cannot encrypt every line and communication system anymore than Microsoft can. Probably even less so, in that they get government funding.

Honestly, do we really need more mommy state laws and taxes for this kind of pointless shit? Ignoring the random and pointless aspect of this proposal, what is a 1% tax on violent video games going to generate revenue wise? Supposing that either Obama asked them to look into this, and they decided to do so, it would be early into an investigation into political corruption, which will take a VERY long time to run.
