  1. Re:Pretty much right where they are now. on Microsoft Confirms New Music Player · · Score: 1

Apple didn't invent the mouse, quality printing, GUI, MP3 player, 3.5" floppies, online music store, the modern standard location for the keyboard on a laptop computer, or a host of other things i may be forgetting... but they did make it popular... and none of these things may have ever caught on in a big way if apple had not stepped forward.

we might still be using keyboards (only) with MS-DOS XP 2003 Server, printing on green striped paper that has holes on the sides and wakes the neighbors, loading music to our crappy nomad mp3 players.

without apple, who would have been microsofts reason to push forward new technologies? and if it was left to MS alone to decide where to take computing, what would they have come up with?

i shudder to think what the computer would be like today without apple.

  2. Re:as for who was better on Former Host and Writer of MST3K Launches RiffTrax · · Score: 1

Most of the time I watched MST3K very regularly was during the Joel era.

However, going back, I find that it's not really Mike vs. Joel that made episodes better (they're both pretty great)... it was whether or not Frank Conniff had left Arby's yet and joined the cast or was still there before the days of Bobo and Brain Guy... and the movie itself. But I know that it was largely Frank who had the job of sifting through bad movies to find the ones worth doing... mostly because he was the only one who could not only do it without going insane, but actually enjoy it.

BTW, I started to watch The Crawling Hand earlier, and then put on something better since the jokes really aren't good yet (they hadn't hit their stride)... but in the opening song, they claim that it was Dr. Forester and Dr. Ehrhardt who sent Joel into space... but later on it's Dr. F and TV's Frank. As far as I know this is the only inconsistency between all the different versions of the opening credits.

The article mentioned that Intel is doing flat rates to all manufacturers now... so I don't think buying more intel chips is going to get them any discount on the parts they're already ordering... (and the prices they charge HP, Dell, Apple, ... are public information now)

What would save money would be the generally lower cost of AMD chips.

The effects of gravity drop off pretty quickly as the distances increase.

As others have mentioned, the bigger problem is the small amount of gravity caused by the ship itself.

It could be accounted for, especially if the ship was designed so that it's gravitational effects could be accounted for... but it's still a challenge in an experiment like this where precision is key, and the effects they're looking for might be very small.

Maybe they should consider using bigger orbs for the sun and planet... and make the ship some sort of larger inflatable low-mass thing, so that it's gravity would be negligible by comparison.

I have MP3's because it's convenient to have it all or most of it on one device, that I can listen to in my car***. And I go to the cinema still because it's a bigger screen sure, but the big benefit is the sound system... and it's new movies I might not want to wait for, and it's a fun thing to do with family/friends. I don't rip my DVD's because that's a big pain in the butt the last time I tried it... but maybe better programs have been written... either way I have the DVDs already and disk space is limited. All the CDs I do buy are from labels that are not part of the RIAA (Metropolis Records, usually). I do like Air America Radio (love Al Franken...) but now the podcasts aren't free and the reception here sucks for that AM station.

What I'd like to see is some diversity in pop culture for a change. Literally radio is ALWAYS just more of the same. Some new band comes out... and they clearly have nothing special going on, other than some big record contract and media image... no message... no originality. A lot of times they don't even write their own songs or music. It's all fabricated.

I blame the local tv morning news program hosts, pubescent girls that scream and cry, MTV, American Idol, President Bush, NSYNC, Eminem, Red States, make-up artists, Fox News, wardrobe specialists, and ClearChannel for not letting actual creativity exist in a way that people might have the chance to check it out.

*** (Don't bother with those FM tuners that sound like crap, or cassette adapters... I have a Sony CD deck that has auxiliary inputs in the back, just needed a cheap cable from radioshack with RCA plugs on one end and a mini headphone plug on the other)
