While the demo looks slick and intuitive, and I would try it in a heartbeat... Oh wait it IS java...
In KDE, lmouse select and hold some item. using L hand (assuming right handed, lefties may remap kbd at will) all one has to do to cycle thry windows is alt+tab--- I ASSUME Win is the same way, likely Mac and every othe window manager GUI made in the last 10 years...
IIRC there is another key combo that cycles through windows... How is the articles parent really any better?
The only sigificant advantage is the on-screen windows are not reordered, assuming one has the layer memorized or such. I personally doubt that would be any use for most folks.
I Do miss ONE thing on my Amiga--it wasn't original... was a little util that allowed one to do window operations (or whatever) by chording mouse buttons. (The Amiga supported 3, and the std mouse had a place for and witing for the switch)
While they once made rock solid printers, HPs recent units are shoddily made unreliable plastic crap.
So now they'll have replaceable in carts like almost everyone else... Lexmark being the only holdout.
Even though Cannon has issues with Linux support (none) IIRC they are the ONLY printers with both separate easy to refill in carts AND print heads. (But one can buy a new printer for what the heads cost IIRC)
Disposable printers ARE the logical next step afetrall.
I have always like Cannon printers, have used them for years under Linux.
Picked up a Pixma 4000 as soon as they came out. Killer package and capabilities...
Got it home... No Linux drivers or support, ever (Per Cannon), or near term hope for reverse engineered drivers, even though the Mac OSX vesion uses _GIMP-PRINT and CUPS_ for gods sake.
I picked up an Epson CX5400 print/copy/scan unit, and have been floored with how well it works, the print quality and how long the carts last especially-- I must have printed 100 8x10s and a bunch of wedding invitations on the first set.
MDK10.1 and Mandriva 10.2 autodetect scanner and printer just fine.
SUSE 9.3 has to be told they're present (scanner and printer), but works.
I'm not certain this guy is trolling--- Given what he describes, it's a realistic scenario, in that He didn't do ANY research etc.
If you walk into something totally unfamiliar/ blind, the expected happens. You step in something or worse.
Kudos for using Ghost, btw. I use a Knoppix CD and partimage. YMMV.
He also doesn't indicate how long ago this "event" occurred... Things have improved greatly in recent years.
Also... ATI SUCKS. There, I said it. NVidia drivers, both the free/Free ones WORK as a rule, and the hardware is very good.
Brother? perhaps it was a brand new unit, insufficient info (IIRC at least SOME Broter products DO work well under Linux)
Most (at least commercial) Linux distros have this neat feature available online usually called a "hardware compatability database".
If some widget works for one distro, it probably CAN work on all of them if you add the drivers, but at a totally green user/admin level, that's unlikely to happen as it requires work/knowledge..
It lists what is OFFICIALLY supported, and sometimes things that work anyway, but have limitations like nonstandard video modes and undocumented, nonstandard interfaces.
The All In Wonder series video cards/grabbers are a perfect example of this... They have never worked well if at all under Linux.. Everyone elses does for the most part.
Hopefully the company broken enough laws that the CEO will have time to reflect upon his misdeeds from Club Fed.
Sadly, in seldom works that way, but at least they are now known spammers, and forevermore will be known that way.OTOH, Microsoft might buy them then (Claria)
Use recommended hardware, stick a Knoppmyth CD in it and boot.
I don't run Knoppmyth myself, I'm running MDK 10.2, but have set up several systems for family that way, as well as using it to troubleshoot MY system to see what the audio setup SHOULD be when it works. (Before I had it memorized)
I'm with you on the concerns about Fox, whatever nutjob dis the scheduling for Serenity needs counseling, or a beating, but "Enterprise" is perhaps a poor example.
I'm in the "target demographic", card carying Trek fan, B5 nut, even managed to see 2-3 (random) episodes of "Serenity" before they nuked it from orbit...
I started recording and consistently watching Enterprise once I got Mythtv set up, gave it my best shot trying to get into the story...
Also, it runs fine with 128m ram, as long as you set up swap normally.
Ran this way for quite some time whan I had a stick of RAM crap out, was shocked/surprised how WELL it worked.
(More IS better, but for std desktop stuff, 128 will "do". If you run OOo a lot, try one of the dozen or so "lightweight" WMs available, just set up your sources with easy urpmi.
I suggest icewm as a lightweight as it is sort of "windows" ish...
Only problem with that fine business plan is no one who can spell "Linux" would willingly BUY a Compaq...
HP branded (used to be) GOOD. Compaq bad. Got it?
I want to see if it will build on Mandrake 10.2.
Seriously, is this REALLY open source?
If my tax dollars paid for it's development, I want source...
(Visualizing nice canned preconfigured Linux or Mac boxes for Doctors offices///healthcare facilities)
When the guru tried to give it away for free, he was ignored.
When he started SELLING "training" for insane prices, it became all the rage.

Was the guy a search engine expert?
I'd mod parent "insightful" if I had points today...
If you value your CURRENT, single quality of life, pay heed.
There ARE rare exceptions, but the guy has a good point.
(Myself, Married 23 years)
"Unfortunately for the tv industry, I don't think men want commercials at all... "
;-) ...And TRUE.
Close.
Men want commercials with big, bouncy BREASTS.
This may be funny, but also insightful
Please moderate to hell.

You make a good point, stronger than you think...
"(look at how many people are still using Win2k today 3 years later)"
It's 2005. Win2k came out IIRC in 1999.
Hint---2000==more than 3 years old is my guess;-)
_XP_ is around 3 years old, give ot take a few months.
That only gets a +3 funny???
What's WRONG with you people?
HP is just going to the next logical step.

I ditched Debian for the same reason.
....
Pick one:
Stable---Totally out of date, useless for a desktop IMHO.
Testing---STILL pretty out of date, but varies. Probably OK for a desktop, but a good number of packages (to be current for builds) requires...
Unstable. Usually current, MANY broken packages, but NOWHERE near as "stable" as say
Mandrake//Mandriva Cooker, which sort of amazed me when it didn't crater... (It never borked on an upgrade while I used it ~6 months)
...I wish I had my modpoints today for the parent...
Intersting photo, but thers is a better, simpler, OBVIOUS explanation of that photo than unprovable phenomena.

The increasing brightness is the now more damaged shuttle burning up, faster.

The alternative is to nuke them from orbit,,,the only way to be sure.
Use recommended hardware, stick a Knoppmyth CD in it and boot.

It tends to JUST WORK. OR NOT.
I'm with you on the concerns about Fox, whatever nutjob dis the scheduling for Serenity needs counseling, or a beating, but "Enterprise" is perhaps a poor example.

IMHO "Enterprise" sucked. Sorry.
I guess B5s story long term arcs spoiled me.
And in a leap of wild abandon, call the bloody e-mail program something like... Mozilla MAIL.
How about... Mozilla.
OK, Perhaps Mozilla v2.
I'm pretty sure they would have THAT covered, it's better known, and is bloody obvious.
Highly unoriginal, I know, but the only really sane thing to do.
Also, it runs fine with 128m ram, as long as you set up swap normally.
Ran this way for quite some time whan I had a stick of RAM crap out, was shocked/surprised how WELL it worked.

The only "major" issue I ran into is they enable hyperthreading by default (acpi=ht).
On at least MY NF2 MB (FIC Au11), this borks the USB, which is somewhat problematic with a USB mouse and keyboard.
No USB during the install, or after first boot. Have to edit lilo.conf and omit "acpi=ht"
This is a known issue... But it's the ONLY issue I ran into that I would consider an "issue" (several machines for family)
As to the extra disc they ask you for--- They ASK for it _IF_ you have it, and if you don't, it still works...
I still suggest leaving all the network/X11/printer config for after first boot.
I also suggest doing a clean install of 10.2//2005 LE, which has been out for awhile.
(I'm still running 10.1--- Mythtv works fine)
