I wasn't complaining about my current commute though. I was complaining about how getting around Boston pretty much sucks and I can live an hour away, save money and still have nearly the same commute time.

If you don't secure a place to live in May, you will have a difficult time finding anything other than a complete sh1thole for $1500 a month ($2000 if you want 2 bedrooms). Don't forget that you will pay at least $100 a month for parking.

Subway and bus system is ok, though at times of the day is far too crowded to even get on when it arrives. Where the "T" can't be found, buses can. The coverage is commendable. Having said this, you would think that its pretty decent.

But alas, I lived in Brighton (part of Boston - uses Boston police force) which is about a 10 minute drive from my work (near South Station, heart of Big Dig). For me to take pulic transportation to work, I had to use a combination of bus and "T" or just another bus that was few and far between. It would take me at least an hour to get to work via public transportation with either method.

This is why I moved an hour south of Boston and drive (or occasionaly bus) to work. My rent is now 1/3 of that in Boston and my travel time is the same as before. Of course, my commute also contributes to the traffic problem. I am 55 miles south - commute ranges from 60 to 90 minutes. Commute home can take longer at times.

FYI, there is a commuter rail that is planned to extend into the town (Fall River, MA) I live in in a year or two. This was supposed to actually be up and running by now. Unfortunately, the budget for the commuter rail is tied to the Big Dig as well. So when the Big Dig f's up and needs more money, they push back the expansion of said commuter rail.

    - Give away your music. Metallica* did this and it made them stars without radio play. Make CDs and tapes and give them away. Why have only partial MP3s on your site? You need to post the whole song, and f@ck the Real format. That only serves to piss those of us who are willing to support a non-signed band off. That's label b@llsh1t.
    * make sure not to screw your fans later, like Metallica.

    - Virtual Press Kit. - You need your website, sure. But you also need a press kit that can be obtained online. If I were booking clubs, I'd spend about 10 seconds straining my eyes at your dark and forboding web design and give up. Club bookers care not about your mystique, but about your draw, who you've opened for, what large venues you've played at, ect.

    - Expect to make no money with this album. - I'm sure you paid the dude from Tool quite a bit to produce your album. But if you expect to make it without a label, you can not just try to emulate the music industry tactics without the large financial backing. The best thing you could do would be to give away your music, or at least 4 tracks. Make the CDs enhanced - the same fans that visit your website, will make good use of these.

    - Gorilla marketing - You need a street team to pass out flyers and generally spread the word around. If possible, have your web guy create a free web based email system and give it away to your fans. At the bottom of every email that goes out through this is your blurb. Think Hotmail. Think Yahoo. Think free advertising.

    - Hop onto the Genre Bandwagon - In my experience, other bands in the same genre will help to promote each other. Don't be pricks as bad advertising is worse than none at all when folks are paying money to help support you and not the record industry. Links from these guys sites, their message boards, their liner notes are invaluable.

    - MP3.com, Garageband.com, ect - Though you are offering your music from your site, you might be better served by posting it to the above sites. Regardless of other factors, they are a 3rd party that keeps track of listeners for you. This is hard core information that can be used as leverage to get signed by a GOOD label who isn't JUST out to make money off of you.

A friend and I have created a system for the web in which bands within the same genre can share an online radio station. It gets linked from each bands website and listeners vote on songs which determine upcomming playlists. We also developed a system in which visitors who want your music are dynamically sent to different music online sources (MP3.com, ect) as to spread the love around. We have the perfect setup for indie community / band websites.

I have made websites for bands for 3 years now in the Boston area, in all genres including hard core. I have managed bands, made press kits, been involved in producing, booking clubs and festivals, ect. Feel free to contact me as I have more info than I could possibly write here.

I would be willing to bet that Apple DOES have an extensive hardware NFR (not for resale) policy for cases like I mentioned. I know Apple has given us hardware for testing our software on. And we don't expose them to millions at a time as a result.

I think that pop ups have already overstayed their welcome and thus usefullness.

Replay TV already does ads to me, but not while I am actually watching a program. They generally push their ads in the way of a full screen still while I have the Replay paused. As soon as I hit any key on the remote, the ad disappears.

I don't mind this ad at all, though I feel it would be better served if there were some relation to my viewing habits. I also feel there are other opportunities to advertise to me without interupting my show. If they managed to target specific ads to relevant viewers, I think they would be infinitely more affective.

But I concur in regards to popups. If I came off that they were appropriate and effective, I made a mistake.

    Good point.

But mediums like Tivo and Replay (I suppose it is a stretch to call them different mediums, but they do have the ability to present the media in alternate methods other than the typical linear experience TV employs) have the ability to market items within their interface.

When I pause my ReplayTV, an add for one of their products comes up. I know that PVRs could be smart enough to notice which product placements I have viewed and could "push" cooresponding and competing ads to me otherwise. This could be done while I am updating my programing, have my unit paused, searching, ect. As PVRs move to broadband connectivity, the ability to stream ads at appropriate times is viable.

I suppose in the end, networks and PVR manufacturers will HAVE to be creative in the manner in which they push advertising as PVRs are quickly outdating their methodology.

I am willing to be that the future of web advertising might make better use of product placement than it generally does now as we see pop-ups phased out (like iVillage and AOL seem to be leabing toward).

AOL has already started with their IM that pops up a user portal by default when you open up your IM interface, at least on Mac and Windows. You get some mindless junk to click around on, but notice that Time Warner gets to push a lot of their latest entertainment content that way.
