I've come across dozens of people who seriously believe that the computer casing is the hard drive.
Me too! But I tell them "That's wrong, if you call it the hard drive, computer people will think you're stupid, it's really called a modem, and if it ever makes a funny noise, that means someone's trying to break into your system, unplug it immediately!"
They'll proudly call it a modem from now on to impress us with their sophistication. That's the geek way of marking the territory to warn other geeks of danger.
Does it strike anyone as a bit of a negative attribute that you have to have a massive knowledgebase to use your operating system?
Not really. If you want to run Linux like most people run Windows, you don't need no stinkin' KB. Whenever your programs stop working right, just re-install the OS. Prob solved.
There reason a KB is needed for Linux is that a higher percentage of Linux users want to know how things work and how to fix it. The ones who "just want it to work again" can restore from backups.
I use MimeDefang at home, and CanIt at work. Both are from Roaring Penguin. They've done an amazing job of stripping out Spam, Viruses, and Worms.
MimeDefang is free, but you need to know a bit about Linux, Sendmail, etc.
CanIt is commercial, but much cheaper than any other commercial product. Installation is easy and well documented. Does much more and has a great Web front end. It's a fantastic deal for anyone who doesn't like to fiddle with sendmail settings for a hobby.
if there are other planets with life on them, Jesus would have had to visit them all in order to "save" them
Only true if the inhabitants of those planets had sinned. Animals can't sin, so they need no savior. According to the Bible, the vast majority of creation does not need salvation, as they are not created "in God's image". It's quite logical to assume that life could exist on other planets either in a start like the animals here, or in a state like Adam and Eve before the fall. Just because history took one course here doesn't mean it is mirrored everywhere else. Even if the story was repeated exactly, that doesn't reduce the uniqueness of Christ's sacrifice. Those beings might be trusting in the work He did here. It's also possible that Christ went there also, there is nothing in the Bible that makes that illogical at all.
I'm a Christian, and I have no problem whatsoever with life existing on other planets. I find new and "exotic" science like "string theory" quite interesting and exciting as well. It (string theory) seems a very logical explanation of God's working in this universe. Extra dimensions? no problem! Extraterrestrial life (intelligent or not) ? also not a problem!
You are assuming an easy (so easy an MSCE could do it) way for all senders to do this. Let's suppose a company only allows signed (or money escrowed) email into their system. A customer chooses not to comply with this, do you say "Oh well, we need some way to weed out the stupid ones anyway"? If so, your gonna get a visit from your company's SM (Sales / Marketing, or something else) Department, and your policy will be reversed before the end of the day, either by you or by your coworkers after they help you box up your things.
It's not a *bad* idea, it just fails when it meets the realities of the business world.
RBL's suffer from the same reality. Losing (or even delaying) an email from a customer with a big order the rep needs to make quota on the last day of the month will not make you a hero, no matter how much spam you stopped, the one good one that was lost is what will start the inquisition. The only way to fit this in the real world is with a really complete white list. It's a lot of work to maintain, but the only alternative is to open the gates and let it all through.
I dunno, doofii sounds kind of right.
I think this could be a great great name for a fraternity, Doofii Doofii Pi.
Or maybe the name of a band, "The Orange Doofii".
I misread that title as "Wife Management". Imagine my disappointment when you mentioned wire-ties. I can tell you, they do not work for wife management! And I would personally encourage you to avoid the temptation to even try. You might seem successful inially, but it will soon overload your audio circuitry and cause the "plug and play" to malfunction.
BTW, before you go too far down this path, duct tape is a bad idea also.
But is there anything that can be done to SCO directly when it comes to violating a court order? What's the worst? a fine? the case is kicked out?
I'd like to see the judge throw Darl into prison for contempt of court and tell him he'll stay there until IBM gets all they asked for.
I wonder if that would make the lawyers work harder, or kick back and have a party (billable hours, of course).
Aren't those fish sterile (on purpose)? I believe a read something like that when the news about them first came out
I thought I read that also, but a friend of mine bought some to try to breed them and he has a whole bunch of babies, so they are clearly not sterile. It will be impossible to "put the genie back in the bottle" now. I personally have strains of fish that no pet store has sold for 20+ years, they are just bred and passed along to other fish hobbists, so shutting down the trade won't eliminate them from the fish hobby, in fact it will only make them more popular.
It's sad they even waste their time and money on stuff like this. I guess this is just part of the "fool and his money are soon parted" program.
Not to mention that humans doing experiments on mars GREATLY reduces the latency. How long does a round trip signal take? I could go on and on about why we want humans on mars.
We all know people with a longer latency than Spirit, please don't send them.
That a tax system that requires spending money on complication-processing software, or having to hire an accountant/tax preparer, is a tax system in dire need of reform?
Welcome to America !!
You must be new here. The thing I dread most from our government is when congress decides to "simplify" the tax code.
It's no wonder that things are the way they are. Any country that allows itself to be governed by a committee of lawyers is in trouble by definition.
I'll leave working out the technical details as an exercise for the reader, but the earth has begun picking up speed due to global warming. If we don't stop it, we will soon be loosing seconds as the earth accelerates over time. This will be a VBT (Very Bad Thing), so I hereby call on all citizens of the world to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and take other steps to reverse the trend toward global warming and the increase in rotational acceleration that goes with it.
Your SUV will be responsible for the next second that mankind will loose forever.
Think of the children !! Oh, the humanity !!!

If I got that letter, I'd be tempted to send them one back "requiring them to certify that none of the software they distribute is in violation of the GPL or other licenses". And state in the fine print that they agree that any violations of copyright (including GPL) on their part would result in the remainder of their IP being re-licensed under the GPL.
Then release that to the press just before their conference call with SCO.
What if an enterprising radio station put a powerful radio tuned to their station next to the billboard's receiever? Then it would overpower the car radios and make it appear that all the cars are tuned to that station. This would seem like a good thing for that station's marketing department.
And just teach them with Excel. A spreadsheet provides a good visualization of a table, and since you can do multiple sheets, you could have multiple tables. Problem solved.
If you're even considering Access, this class is obviously not meant to be applicable to real databases anyway, so why make the students do all the extra work. If they ever need to use Access for a real job, they will just treat it like a complicated Excel spreadsheet anyway.
If anyone complains the curriculum is too simplistic, tell them "Research has shown that overall performance is better with significant de-normalization in the database". If they don't understand that, they'll be satisfied by the answer. If they do understand it, they now understand what the class is really about.
Your right. I'm a fish hobbyist (actually a breeder) and have dozens of non-GM zebrafish in my tanks right now (actually, they are a rarer species, but look and act much the same). You can't tell these from normal zebras in normal light. So how are the border inspectors (the United Republic of Cali does have closed borders, right?) going to detect them. What if I put 1 in a bag with 50 normal zebras?
This will never stop them. It would be like banning alcohol, and we know how well that worked. Actually alcohol is a lot easier to detect because it sometimes makes the owner act stupid, which I doubt will happen to the people trading in illicit GM fish (unless they drink the water from the bag, but in that case I'd say they are genetically pre-disposed to stupidity).
I'll never forget how the "retina scan" security was bypassed. Every time someone brings up the idea of biometrics for security, I get shivers thinking about it.
Passed on a 392-5 vote, the House bill largely mirrors "Can Spam"
It looks to me like the entire house are "GW's friends" in this case. I apologize in advance for offending you if the facts I'm pointing to interfere with your prejudices.
The issue here is that all politicians (including the ones you like) are too stupid to be making laws like this. To the man (or woman), their only concern is re-election.
Me too! But I tell them "That's wrong, if you call it the hard drive, computer people will think you're stupid, it's really called a modem, and if it ever makes a funny noise, that means someone's trying to break into your system, unplug it immediately!"

Or that people read the EULA's instead of trusting in Clippy!

I get annoyed reading messages and finding out later that the poster was a dog, or something.
