that's actually a fairly reasonable idea, except i definately don't have the time, money, and equipment. but i'd be fully supportive if someone else were to do this, even if they charged me $20 for the set from their off-shore datahaven.
the only problem would be that the video image would be inconsistent between DVD and LD versions. there's also the question of what stuff to replace, like just altered scenes & lines, or like the lightsaber scene that looks dumb because they messed with the image contrast. anyway i'm sure it could be done, but assuming the LD version is a good digital transfer of the original I might just stick with that. But i don't really know how much they may have improved the image quality between the VHS, LD, and DVD versions, so I can't tell if it would be worth it. -Mike
NO it is NOT his. Besides the fact that he was not the sole creator of these movies (lets not forget the original editors, script writers, actors, or the fact that Lucas didn't even direct all 3 original movies) once he releases the film he has given it to the public. WE went to see it, we sang its praises, we told our friends to check it out. We have all been made party to the success of the films, and that gives us claim. Lucas absolutely does not have the right (artistically, not legally) to change these movies. It is outrageous and unacceptable that I cannot purchase the movie I saw because some fuckhead producer wanted to change things. I enjoyed the original version, part and parcel, and as far as I'm concerned any changes are wrong and should not be included.
The worst part is that these altered editions are not offered as options, but as the sole succesors to the originals. The "Special Edition" was not a special edition, sold next to the regular edition, it was the "New Edition" that replaced the old versions. The recently released DVD versions are even worse, as they simply call themselves Star Wars. BUT THEY ARENT. They are new movies made out of old ones. If people want to watch them, by all means go ahead, and if Lucas wants to make them, whatever, but they ARE NOT the real movies.
Accordingly, I do not plan on buying any of this shit. Does anyone have a suggestion for how I could get the original movies in a good format? It's unbefuckinglievable that a popular movie will not be released in an unaltered form on DVD. Lucas, what a motherfucker.
What an awful review. The extent of interesting product details include storage capacity and transfer speed. How about image quality? Camera features like focus, balance, etc.? Battery life? Video storage capacity (how much time does that 1gb get you)? How about the size of the camera? How heavy is it? Does it seem poorly or well made? etc. etc. This review is very sparse on details, and does little more than summarize some of the features and confirm that the camera works, more or less.
Indeed, the parent is correct. I've never found much use for "Valerie", although one time i forgot my phone and needed to know the time. She responded correctly. So I guess she's helpful.
The significance of this news is that wind power can be used as a power source at a price low enough to compete with other sources of power. If only 70% of that power is retained, that competitive price is lost and other types of power plants become more cost effective. While the source of the energy may be infinite, or at least renewable, that does not mean that there are no fixed or variable costs associated with the harvesting, and then the storage, of that power.
You are missing the point. The parent is pointing out the unlikelyhood of such a transmission, but is not himself advocating a decrease in health regulation and safety measures. The post that you originally replied to did suggest such a change, and noted the improbability of cow -> human BSE. He was correct in the support of his argument, but I disagree with his conclusion, as might you. If you disagree with the facts, such as the likelihood of transmission, then post data relevent to such a claim. If you concede the facts, then essentially your argument is that the measures taken by the FDA etc. are worthwhile given the risk of infecting someone with a horrible and deadly disease. If that is your argument, then I would agree.
I think the appeal of cs is the gameplay. Well, I _know_ it's the gameplay, but there are a lot of important things that make cs stand out from other games. From the mix of team and solo strategy, the balance of realism and fun, round scoring & spawning, even the way the guns shoot and the players jump, each thing sets cs apart from other games. I'm not sure why cs is so popular, but when comparing with quake 1-3, bf1942, america's army, several rainbow 6's, none seem to balance these elements as well. Personally i find myself getting frustrated or bored (eventually) in the other games, while a good cs server can occupy me for hours on end. Anyway i'm excited to see if CS:source can retain all that we like about cs while improving on the parts that could use updating. Steam is still a pain in the ass, but they've managed to reduce it to a minor pain (the friends system is still totally unreliable shit) and maybe they will improve from there.

btw, is this the IronChef that used to play on the ASY server?
Two enthuthiastic thumbs up for Total Annihilation. I think it is the oldest game I have installed and play on occaision, when I need its particular brand of RTS goodness. Damned shame what happened to Cavedog, I always wanted more titles from them.
Good reply, but those of us without Nature subscriptions can't view the actual article. What does the actual research say? The original Reuters article doesnt really supply enough information to understand.

do you know where this specific research has been published? it might be antisense mRNA or another oligonucleotide antisense agent, but it could be something different, many researchers are working on different techniques.
if it's just what you've described, it's not terribly new research. antisense mRNA techniques have been around for a while in vitro, the problem has been developing something that will work in a living organism
not to reply to my own post, but thinking about how squimish ppl get about discussing politics reminded me of a Dave Chappelle routine/skit where he notes this apparent predeliction in caucasians. black guy: "so, who do you think you will vote for in the upcoming election?" white guy: "geez dont get all personal, I dont know you well enough to discuss something like that. anyway, so like i was saying i was f*cking my wife in the ass last night and...."
haha! too true :/
p.s. if you actually remember how it goes feel free to remind me, my memory is going in my old age.
What is the problem with politics in video games? Politics is about ideas and principles (at least it is supposed to be), and any video game worth its mustard must involve just that. I think we've gone too far in considering politics too touchy a subject to discuss, when really it should be constantly considered and discussed. I think the only problem is when the politics are compromised, that is when people misrepresent their opinions due to outside pressures. This can come from friends, family, bosses, coworker, lucrative endorsements, fear of litigation, etc. If a game espouses communism because the creators consider it a tenable ideology, thats ok with me, if they do so because of secret envelopes of cash being dropped at the dev's front door by ex-KGB intelligence officials now working for an international conspiracy, that's not really cool. If the game includes politics in an honest & forthright way I have no problems (even though I may disagree with the opinions expressed, and that may impact my enjoyment of the game). That is the perogative of the dev's, and is certainly present in any game with heart.
theres no point in products like this at the kind of prices they're talking about - $60 / 35gb cartridge. I can get a 200gb 7200rpm sATA drive for $150. I guess this is useful for transporting something really big, but generally a dvd-r or good networking is just great. mebbe if they were $10/disc
This cannot be right: "Considering the fact that suicide among the nation's young people, (89.5% of young male suicide victims were white), inexplicably jumped to an alarming 40 percent during 1970-1980 (according to the Center for Disease Control)"
No way there was a 40% suicide rate in any demographic from 1970-1980, unless there was a hell of a cover up.
For anyone interested in the actual research (as opposed to the New Scientist overview) it is published in this month's Nature. It's available at http://www.nature.com/cgi-taf/DynaPage.taf?file=/n ature/journal/v428/n6981/full/428373a_fs.html... but i dont have a susciption
correct me if I'm wrong, but the space.com article has nothing to do with anyone at NASA. so to critisize NASA in this thread seems a little harsh. I think generally NASA does accentuate data that and theories that support the existence of water, but I wouldnt go so far as to suggest that they are ignoring alternative interpretations, or that they are doing something unethical or improper. although if you have specific examples of NASA distorting or improperly using information, that would be interesting.
wow what a stupid post & argument. i dont mean to sound argumentative, but you provide almost no support for your conclusion that "ESA's mission is superior to NASA's mission". First let me say the ESA mission is important and useful. Remote mapping of the surface will help researcers understand martian geography, helping to locate points of interest, understanding weather paterns, and learning more about the geographic changes the planet may have undergone over the past few thousand years.
But the US mission is also very valuable. You ask "But what have they produced so far? A few snapshots and panorama pictures (which are nice, but well...), and some stone probes." which is really just silly. The photos the landers have taken are more than just panoramas of the scenary. While these do tell us more about the martian surface, the really imporant pictures are of the rock formations, close-ups of the surface sand and rock, and micrographs of all the material there at the surface. Seeing exactly what martian rock, pebbles, and sand looks like is very important for understanding the martian atmosphere & weather patterns, as well as geologic makeup and history. to suggest that it's only taken a few is absurd... check out http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/spirit. html for spirit's photos, http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/opportu nity.html for opportunity's.
the other tools on the rovers (see http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/spacecraft_ surface_instru.html for details) are also very important. these tools will allow accurate analysis of collected samples. while an orbiter can determine chemical content to a degree, the detail pales in comparison to what the rovers are finding.
with all your unfounded critisism and palpable distaste for another country, I almost mistook you for an American! try not to be so prejudiced in the future, mmK?
well.... clearly yes water has many very important properties, but that page doesnt do a very good job illustrating why it is significant for life. i think one of the reasons we get so excited about water is because it is so relevent to the working of our form of life. h2o is involved in an incredibly wide range of the organic reactions occurring in your body and in other terrestrial forms of life. it's entirely possible that other living organisms could operate with entirely different sets of biochemical reactions, and not need water at all. but if water is available, then something that we are more familiar with might be living there, and we know what to look for.
btw, capillary action is not a unique property of water, it will occur with any liquid that an affinity for the substrate
