George Allen did alot to push technology and its funding as governor of Virginia, so I feel like I can actually trust him to push something like this through. It also helps that congressman Rick Boucher D-Va and he see eye to eye alot on technology. Babs Boxer supposedly knows alot about tech as well, but that remains to be seen.

I guess my point here is that maybe people should focus on talking to representative such as Allen, Boucher, and maybe Boxer when it comes to overturning laws such as the DMCA and to defeating the upcoming ones that are far worse.

    Dunno, it's just a thought.

I went to college in Harrisonburg. It is the home of James Madison University. JMU's CS curriculum teaches people on the UNIX platform. Most all of the programming assignments are submitted via one of the Sun boxes there. There are a couple programming classes for MS applications but they are by far not the most popular. Also, they teach simple networking based on UNIX and linux as well. So if the city really wanted someone to support the infrastructure they built in the public schools, all they would need to do is form some sort of joint program with the college to have students come over and support it. Maybe give them Internship/CO-OP credits for it. The reality is that if more schools would work with colleges in a format like this then there stands the great possibility of major advancement in technology curriculum on BOTH sides.

Excuse me! I come from a redneck tech area. I now run the IT dept for a Biotech, and I'm damn good at it. The high school I went to had old 386 computers and were peer-2-peered with twisted pair cable running Windows 3.1 when I attended. I learned BASIC, Pascal, AND C++ while attending there and I also maintained the network. We actually had a good computer curriculum and it wasn't because MS or Dell came in and just gave us a bunch of useless machines that weren't going to get used. It was because we had good teachers who were willing to teach us the things we wanted to learn. Tech education is EXACTLY the point of PC's in schools (from the school standpoint) even if the corporate standpoint on it is to gain a tax break. But I think it is deeper than that. I think tech companies are trying to increase what American students learn about computers partially to replace the people who work for them now but wont in the future and partially because many companies are tired of hiring below-par foreign workers and having to sponsor them in this country.

The cell towers have gotten so crowded that when you call AT&T they tell you that only about 68% of all calls made from that area are able to get through due to overcrowding. Right now it is just JBoss. But what happens when Apache starts this, then RedHat, then Jakarta, then various other groups. If I have to pay $5k just to be certified and approved for JBoss then these other groups start charging similar fees, it wont be very long before half your yearly salary is eaten up in cert fees and stuff....just so you can say you are certified.

The price of this seems rather escalated. I can understand taking a Cisco cert...you pay $2k...take the test...and thats it...you are certified until they come out with a superior cert. Same with oracle. But what if JBoss doesnt come out with a new version with substantially new features in a year and you still have to pay $5k. This makes no sense to me.

Sure, it may make them look more professional in they eyes of say....some managment people somewhere, but with the fees they are charging, it makes them look less credible to me.

Not that the RIAA will ever read this (are you reading this Hilary Rosen?) but here is an interesting thing that crossed my mind: I bought the System of a Down CD at Tower Hollywood last week for $17.99. It is an hour long CD that took the guys from the band a reported 13 days in the studio to make.

    Contrast

I also bought 'The Fellowship of the Ring' DVD at the same store for $19.99. For a measly two dollars more I got a three hour DVD epic and possibly one of the greatest movies ever made not to mention the over two and a half hours of extras that came on the second DVD.

    Thought

Did it ever cross anybody's mind that it cost over $100 million dollars to produce market and distribute 'The Fellowship of the Ring' yet it probably cost the recording studio that produced, marketed, and distributed the System CD under $20 million dollars to do the same thing, yet, the CD costs $2 less than the movie i purchased. That is totally ridiculous. THAT is why I never buy CD's. THAT is why I have a DVD collection of over 400 DVDs yet I only own maybe 30 CD's. Truth be told...if I want entertainment at home...I'd rather watch a movie anyways. If I'm in the car...I put on KROQ (its free ya know).

Record companies are greedy conniving bastards who screw over the bands and entertainers they sign by not sharing as much of the profits as they should and then turn around and screw over the people they are trying to entertain by raising the prices so high that nobody will buy the music and when they do...they see absolutely no reason why not to share it with their friends. Just a thought, but maybe when 256 million fans are screaming that music is overpriced and not worth the investment you would realized that your business practices are old, antiquidated, and generally repellant to the public you are pushing them on.

    But thats just my opinion!
