Sharp has missed the US boat. Though there was clearly a demand to release these clamshell units in the US, Sharp has had a cronic case of cranial-rectal insertion and has declined.
I thought I wanted one of these and I was willing to pay about $500 for it but I think now I will pass. Sony is now releaseing a new Clie that I think will serve most of my needs though it is not Linux. Check out the PEG TH-55 - big screen, WiFi, decent PIM apps and ~$320 street price.
Too bad Sharp that you couldn't figure out how to sell your hardware...
This is the introductory computer science textbook at MIT as you mentioned. If you truly understand this book and course you can program in any language. This and all of the above languages have free, opensource programming and OS environments.
I agree with the above posts, if you want to code or you can project manage, get involved with an open source project and don't quit your day job until you have an established portfolio of projects.
Build a Linux box from scratch, and know it inside and out. Play games on it, run benchmarks with it using beta kernels. Backport something to Debian
All that said, I'm a techie whose thought about being a doctor or lawyer. Maybe we should swap stories and frustrations. The grass is always greener...
HTH,

I've been very happy with both my Roll-on and Laptop back from Briggs & Riley. They are very well made, service has been good, lifetime warranty, and they have been to Korea, Japan, Europe, and numerous domestic US flights and still look near new.
They are expensive but I've had them for 4 years and still are very functional.
I was playing drink and surf and over bought some case badges. Help me get rid of them and donate money to debian at the same time.

Handwriting recog. under linux sucks. If the C7xx/C8xx PDAs had it and it worked, and they were actually sold and supported in the US, Sharp might actually have a product. This is not a troll - I really, really want a modern Newton and if it ran Linux that would be even better!!!
If Apple builds a modern Newton in the small form factor that can really be a modern, cross-OS (Open Office, browsers, etc.) compatable PDA/Tablet/Clamshell that "I" can take handwritten notes with in a meeting, had 8 hr battery life, fits in my pocket, etc. - That's the killer app!!!
I have been reading the Tolkien stuff for 30 years (I'm 42). Though I don't think the LOTR Trilogy is perfect (I missed Tom Bombadil...) it to me is obviously made with love for the story and characters and to me, true to the spirit of the story that I have spent so many hours in my life reading and imaginging! I have a three year old girl that I'm looking forward to reading the story to, and then watching the movie.
It is a tremendous achivement that Peter was able to make all three at once and the director's cuts of 1 & 2 are also tremendous. Thank you for bringing such a favorite story of mine to life! If only someone could do it with Dune...
I hope Peter Jackson is able to make The Hobbit with the same love and care as LOTR. I would love to see Smaug and the gold as seen by Peter and Co. Bring it on!!!
This will give you a minimal but extremely stable install. If you want newer stuff you can shift to "testing" or "unstable". Unless your are doing cutting edge stuff, this install is bulletproof!
If the cost of running cable or fiber is expensive, you may be able to use existing wiring. Cisco has what is called Long Range Ethernet (LRE). Supposedly you can run this stuff over barb wire...
There is clearly a market for this class of device. I would love a Newton that was updated with the technology now available. The Sharp SL-C700 is the closest thing that I would be willing to replace my Palm Vx with at the moment. The device is smaller than the old newtons but has the power to run anything. The biggest problems with the Sharp are the the PIM applications are lame, battery life, and the fact that there are now plans to actually release it in the US.
Apple has the expertise from the Newton to take the Sharp hardware mainstream. If the Sharp can run TrollTech and Debian, could it not run OSX and Inkwell? I would like to be able to at least compile most Linux apps to run on the platform
What I would like to see in a mini-PC/handheld/PDA in SL-C700 form-factor would be:
All day battery life
802.11b built-in
Voice-recorder with at least off-line recognition (dictation)
USB connectivity that can recharge
RS-232 (for terminal/ssh apps
2 CF/MMC slots
MUST sync with Outlook as per Palm
Good handwriting recog. as well as a non-thumb keyboard
Apple, if they didn't want to go to Xscale could use PPC in the form of the new reference design from IBM.
Sharp is being cagey about whether they will release this in the US. Of course they just could be addressing the issues of only 32Meg of RAM, piss poor battery life, no 802.11b, and lame PIM applications...
This device could really be a breakthrough device with the cool form factor, great display, and mainstream Linux support. I urge anyone who is interested to write to Sharp and/or post on the above forum. Don't let Sharp fsck this opportunity up...

How about the auto fill feature in the google toobar?

SCO is plain wrong and their opponents should take the high ground. DDoS attacks are lame and feed the FUD.

Deathblossom! (name that obscure movie reference!)
Hence the importance of judicial nominations and approvals. This is why both parties are abusing the process.

Be careful, you can sued or arrested for saying that kind of stuff...

Which distro you like?
- RH8 - looks good in a suit, shows up on time, can't find a thing in the paperwork but still charges $325/hr, promises you will win in court
- Slackware - Al Pacino - And Justice for All, 'nuf said
- Mandrake - Al Pacino - The Devil's Advocate (it's french isn't it...)
- Debian - John Houseman - Paper Chase -"You come in here with a skull full of mush, and you leave thinking like a SysAdmin."
- Lindows - Shakespeare- Henry VI, Part II,"The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers."
- Caldera/SCO - David Boies...
sorry, I'm tired....Proud of it are we? Try $9.95 and you might sell a few...
should read "NO plans to actually release it in the US"

See Office Space
Will Sharp Sell the SL-C700 in the US? When? Will they add more memory? Will they add 802.11b What will the cost be? TIA, Bod
