  1. this is just weird. on Interview with Peter Jackson on LoTR Bloopers · · Score: 1

I launch mozilla from an e user_apps.menu, which runs /usr/bin/mozilla-firebird when clicked. This is just a script that contains #!/bin/sh exec /usr/lib/mozilla-firebird/MozillaFirebird $@. This was created by mozilla installation. In this case mozilla crashes when clicking the interview link. However, I if just run /usr/lib/mozilla-firebird/MozillaFirebird, without the $@, the link works. Someone know what the $@ is doing? Can anyone replicate this problem?

At my favorite bar there is a Namco Class of 82' machine that has both Ms. PacMan and Galaga on it. Costs 25 cents a game. Personally, I think Galaga owns Space Invaders, but granted, it came out a few years later. But 50 cents a game? Whatever. No one is going to pay that to play Space Invaders when they can pay the same amount to play the "What 5 things are different in these 2 pictures of this naked woman game." It just doesn't add up. 25 cents is a lot more resonable, and I bet you'd get more than twice the quarters to make up for it. The people who would spend 50 cents in the first place are definatly going to spend that same amount on 2 games, and everyone else will be more apt to put money in when they wouldn't before. Thankfully, I think most machines have controls for setting the price, either through flipping a dip, or in software. (FREE PLAY Baby!!)
On a side note, with the demise of the local arcade in the past few years, where is the market for the machines anyway? Bars? Laundrymats?

A dvd doesn't fit in my pocket because it has much to large surface area. Fold it in half, and you'd have the same volume, but much smaller surface area, and a much easier time fitting it in your pocket. Similarly, a pack of cigarettes has more volume than a dvd or cd, and less outer surface area. It fits conviently in your pocket. You can have any volume you want, as small as you wanted, but the possibility exists to span that volume out over an infinate amount of surface area. Granted, a decreased volume of an ideal solid is going to decrease size and surface area of the object, but we could actually increase the volume and make theat object "smaller" by moving away from the flat disc shape DVDs and CDs use, towards a more ideal shape like a sphere, or more practically in this case, a cube or set of cubes.

It seems like every week we're subjected to another story about some research lab somewhere devising a new type of memory that's harder, better, faster, stronger, fitter, happier, more productive, and what have you. This seems all wonderful, but when are we actually going to start seeing this new technology? With these all too frequent advances in memory, all going in seemingly different directions, all sponsored by different entities, doesn't it seem like it is just going to take longer for any of them to become an accepted standard, and actually put in use outside the lab?

Ok, I agree with you about the ewoks, but the droads are prety freakin essential to the story line. I would certianly call them leading characters. Some one like Ackbar, or Mon Motha are more along the lines of non-leading characters. The droids are there in every situation, right along side Luke, Han, and Leia. I mean, the droids deliver the plans to Luke setting up the entire story. R2 is main reason they access certian parts of the death star, cloud city, and various other locals. They save Luke, Han, and Leia from death by trash compaction. R2 saves the Millenium falcon when its hyperspace has been disabled. The duo open up and set the stage for Jedi. 3PO saves them from death by Ewoking. The droids are an instantly recognizeable part of the Star Wars universe, behind only probably Darth Vader and Chewie. I'm really surprised how many people are considering them 'non-leading' characters.
Errr....These aren't the droids we're looking for. Move along...

Does it bug anyone else that this moron Journalist says that It's the first time any leading characters have been animated? I meana quick google search reveals Droids, Ewoks, and even mentions the Christmas Special. I mean, how much research did this guy do? Did he just ASSUME that it would be the first? I mean most of us geeks knew about the older animation, but this guy is writing an article for a nationally published newpaper read by millions of people. At least take the time to get the facts straight. I know its just about Star Wars, and who really cares, but what does this say about other articles this guy's written, are they just as shoddily researched? What if he was wrting about 911, or the President, or Iraq? Before making any kind of blanket statement, he REALLY should make sure he's correct. I really fear that this is more common in modern journalism than we perceive and about things much more important than Star Wars..

  13. Re:leading characters on 'Star Wars: Clone Wars' Premieres Tonight · · Score: 1

I don't mean to toast you at all, but considering that R2 and 3P0 are the only characters in every movie other than Kenobi and Yoda, (I do not consider that little brat as Vader), and two of the most recognizeable, how could you not consider them leading characters? I mean Jedi opens up with just those two to drive the opening. R2 is also Luke's only companion during much of the series on Degobah. I mean, those droids are the only reason Luke got caught up in the intergalactic struggle in the first place. If it wasn't for them he would have actually gone to Hitachi Station to get those power converters instead of just whining about it. So, I certainly believe they deserve to be considered 'leading characters.'

This means NOTHING. Come on now, if you volunteered to have your system monitored 24/7 wouldn't you delete all those files too? People are pretty wise now to the actions of the RIAA and the whole legality issue surrounding mp3s. I wouldn't trust anyone to collect info continously from my PC, but if I did, I sure as hell wouldn't have a ton of possibly incriminating evidence against me. How long until the RIAA subpeonas the NPD Group for info concerning all users with mp3s on thier drive? This is like saying "of our users who KNOW they are being monitored, we've had a 100% deletion of kiddie-pr0n." Well DUH!

The fact that "a method for using gift certifcates for online purchases" could even BE patentable is as rediculous as one click shopping. This is a pretty good article, describing just why I went back to playing a MUD. Usually the community is so much tighter when 100 people play compared to 100,000. While not impossible with your standard MMORPG, it much easier to get help, form relationships with other characters, and communicate with the management (ie Gods and Imms) on a MUD. MUDs are generally free to play. Those who run and develop them do so because *shock* they ENJOY it. Not to make money.

I recently got back into a MUD I played pretty hardcore 5 or so years ago, and It's blown me away how much it has matured and developed over the years. So many new zones, skills, and class features. I challange any MMORPG to develop its world like that, or even still be around in 5 more years.
The MUD I'm on now is called Intrepid, based on heavily modified CircleMud code. telnet to mud.intrepidmud.com 8400 if you want to check it out.
