    when they go out of their way to prevent piracy, via CSS or protected CDs, that's wrong... but when someone does pirate something, it's their own damned fault for not trying hard enough to prevent it?

    Well, if you've been paying attention, real pirates don't worry about CSS, they copy the whole disk and press 20,000 of them. The situation we are discussing has nothing to do with that - somebody taped the movie at a screening. CSS won't stop that either.

    They merely say you're not allowed to charge money to people to watch them.

    It's similar to the situation with bars and large sporting events - bars can't charge admission to their Superbowl party because that would be illegal, but they can sell beer to the people who come.

    The Japanese use Chinese characters

    The Japanese use Japanese characters (kanji) that resemble Chinese characters. They usually input them by spelling them out (using hiragana - the equivalent to an alphabet) and having the computer guess at the meaning, then correct that meaning. It usually works out alright.

    That would imply that your typical fluorescent light bulb is almost 10 times brighter than a 100W incandescent bulb.

    This is true for a 100W flourescent and a 100W incandescent. However, flourescent bulbs are bigger, so the lumens aren't quite so concentrated, and most of them are less than 100W - closer to 40.

    I wouldn't be suprised if a 100W bulb only produced 1W of visible light.

    It's usually around 3W. IIRC, flourescent runs around 25W.

    I can certainly stream video over copper wires - it's called a T1; they use 2 pairs instead of 1.

    To take it further, if you can run the video off of half a T1, then you could service 2 houses per pipe (with a phone line using a 64k slice when in use). The only reason we don't is probably that the phone company has no motivation to do so, as it would upset their revenue model and most likely destroy their nice fat T1 margins.

    No, that is exactly what the Corp is not. Otherwise, the employees would be legally liable for Nike's actions. There are a lot of rights that a corp doesn't have, such as the vote - they are not an individual, and should not be considered a person.

    you need to accept the GPL in order to have the right to copy the software into ram.

    Wouldn't that constitute copying necessary to use the product as intended?

    Shouldn't you be digging up dirt on corporate executives? Lots of people have done things they aren't proud of, and some of it is probably prosecutable. Getting some VPs convicted under 3-strike drug laws could be lots of fun.

    Blaming the user for using the product in a way that the programmer did not intend is bullshit because all interfaces used by humans should be designed for human behaviour!

    In this case, it was the product requirement.

    What was going on in this case was that the launching system had a minor but cumulative rounding error in its time measuring.

    What's interesting is that this isn't a bug. The system in question was designed for a maximum duration of 48 hours between resets, and they ran it for a week.
