please re-read my post. It doesn't matter that there were 80 games on the drive. The man was convicted for modding, not copyright infringement. I'm not attacking the parent poster. I'm noting that, given the conviction, the 80 games mentioned are beside the point.
The general attitude in this discussion seems to be:
If you're born in America, you deserve an easier job, more money and a better standard of living than someone who wasn't born in America.
[Followed by the two-minutes-hate of America]
And the general attitude of the non-Americans on this earth seems to be resentment to spoiled, pampered, rich Americans who walk on streets paved with gold. The sooner everyone gets over this us v. them crap the better, because I can tell you there is nothing further from the truth regarding your average American.
It's amazing how people on this site, who are supposedly progressive and fair and open-minded, suddenly become greedy and nationalistic when their cosy existence is under threat. No matter how much you complain, you have no right to a better existence than anyone else on this planet just because of which country you were born in.
Think about this for a minute. Who do you think buys all that crap being produced in third world nations that are becoming so 'prosperous' all of a sudden? Americans. And if America goes broke, who's gonna buy all the crap?... *crickets chirping*... That's right: Nobody. Third world nations are going to have no use for the crap America buys because third world nations have more immediate needs like clean water and electricity. Even if he could afford it, what use is a dual Xeon workstation to a guy that lives in a tent?
Yes, that is an oversimplification, but here's the part you're missing: The wealth of the world is being concentrated into the hands of very few people, and that group of people DOES NOT include your average American. 'Increased productivity' is drying up the pool of potential buyers because prices aren't falling as fast as profits are rising. Most of those profits are going to the top 0.1% of wage earners and they aren't planning on spreading the wealth. In short, the avarice of the top 0.1%'ers is killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.
If you are having trouble swallowing that simple truth, allow me to elaborate... America is made of money. Just go prune the money tree, right? Where do you think all the spending power came from? America is deeply in debt, that's where. Those spoiled, pampered, rich Americans only appear that way because they are deeply in debt personally. The housing market has driven most of the consumer spending of the last decade. Housing prices go up, home owners cash out the equity and buy stuff. Rinse, repeat. Get paid just for owning a home! Sounds great but those loans still have to be repaid. The consequences of this debt are that Americans are slaves to it. Americans have to keep working to make the payments. Americans must make more money or the system collapses.
Here's where outsourcing enters the picture. Outsourcing is pressuring wages downward in America. It breaks the system. Americans can no longer spend today and owe indefinitely. Americans are so indebted that any disruption will lead to personal financial ruin. If they can't pay for their home, they must default on the loan. As debtors begin to default, banks are stuck with bad loans. Foreclosures drive home prices down and banks eat the losses. Enough of this, and the banks either a) get a government bailout like they did in the 1980s, or b) go under like they did in the 1930s.
So the American government will just bail out the banks again, right? Don't count on it. The US government cannot afford another bail out. America is broke with a national debt nearing $8,000,000,000,000. What's worse, the baby boomers born shortly after WWII are all about to retire, taking their income tax contributions with them. Worse yet, America doesn't have the money lined up to pay their social security. All America has is a bunch of government IOUs the politicians have issued themselves for the past 20 years. Which means those who remain working can ex
Static Control Components wasn't just modding ink cartridges, but they were selling them with a full tank of ink!!oneone1!
What 80 games were on the drives? Doom 3, Halo, and the like or some home brewed pong, brick, and minesweeper? See how that changes the issue. Notice how irrelevant the process of modding is in that context? So modding is illegal, but that's ok because the law was used to slap a bad guy? No. Modding should be legal. Period. It's my hardware, it's my right. Should this guy receive punishment? Maybe, but not for modding. He is being punished for modding. Read it: "A 22-year-old man has become the first person in the UK to be convicted for modifying a video games console." Throwing in the 80 games bit obfuscates the issue. He will probably receive additional punishment for copyright infringement.
Newton also did other experiments, such as staring at the sun until he couldn't bare the pain, to see what would happen; he once stuck a needle in his eyeball and moved it around.
Newton: I promise you it will work. Just bring me a pound of lead and I'll show you!
Scientist2: Bullocks! There's no way I'm hauling a pound of lead all the way up here just so you can..
Newton: Just go get the lead. I *PROMISE* you it will work! Cross my heart, hope to die, stick a needle in...
b. These guys took this problem because "the earliest phase of melting has never been seen" but they didn't do that either! All they did was make "see-through crystals that are like small beads and are visible in an optical microscope." Doesn't sound like a hell of a lot of progress to me; anyone care to elaborate?
The article did not mention whether these crystals were polar like water molecules. I'm sure that should make some difference when we're talking about the crystalline structure of H2O. I'd also like to know if they can elaborate from this observation to explain, more effectively, why ice skates work or why avalanches move so fast.
Referring to the Congressman Hansen story: I am unable to find a citation for the case at the Findlaw archive. Does anyone have evidence of this case's existence?
In 2022, we'll probably have terabyte capacity in our mobile phones. Seriously. In the early 90s, 80 Gb of drive space ran about $80,000 according to this archived historical document. Nowadays, I can get an 80 Gb drive for about $65 according to froogle, and that's without considering inflation. Sure at a conservative $1/Gb were looking at $347 million dollars today, but in 17 years time that'll probably look more like two or three hundred thousand bucks. No biggie for our bloated government.
Why don't you go look yourself. My count: 551 of 599 (92%) listed offenders were black. As of the 2000 census, DC is 60% black by population. I'll refrain from editorializing on this one, as it will most certainly degenerate into a racism flamefest.
1. All men when they form a social compact, are equal in rights; and no man or set of men are entitled to exclusive public emoluments or privileges from the community.
Up next the government is able to seize virtual property.
You're almost there AC. Think 'intellectual property' and you'll begin to see it. Next week's headline will probably read something like "Government seizes Linux kernel to secure Microsoft Windows operating system for the public good." The patent/copyright/trademark game is OVER. He with the most money wins.
I have no reason to suppose that he, who would take away my Liberty, would not when he had me in his Power, take away everything else. -- John Locke
They are NOT economic conservatives. Economic conservatives tend to believe in lower government spending. Economic conservatives do NOT believe in raising spending. Even if you combine the spending increases with tax cuts.
Google for "starve the beast." They intend to reduce the size of government by bankrupting the nation.
The three dead bolts and bars on the window analogy assumes you live in a nice neighborhood. It's obvious that the internet is not a nice neighborhood. Want to live in a nice neighborhood? Move to your LAN and cut off your internet connection. Not an option? Well then, you're on the seedy side of town and you'd best protect yourself. Nobody else is going to do it for you.
alot of other exploits are the equivalent of using a crowbar to break your windows. Thieves get serious jailtime and the police work to find them and they are considered the only ones to blame.
Again, you're under the mistaken assumption that the police have some obligation to protect you. If someone breaks into your house, shoots your children, and the police don't show up for an hour and a half... well, just try blaming/suing the police sometime. You'll find there is no part of the constitution or the law requiring the police to protect you. That's why you have the second amendment. You are expected to take care of yourself like a big boy. Sure, ultimately it's the fault of the criminal that broke into your house, but your kids are still dead. Having the criminal prosecuted and locked away doesn't change that.
In short: If you want security, buy a system that has a good track record on security. Pointing fingers isn't going to make you more secure or make the hackers go away. Death and taxes are inevitable, and life isn't fair.
Is that the fault you find in this? That some people are idealistic and would like to live in a world without assholes?
In a world without assholes, everybody would be full of shit.
In nature, animals without assholes simply regurgitate waste orally. Hence a world without assholes would be full of people talking shit. Therefore, I can conclude that there are no assholes on Slashdot and the LA Times is incorrect in implying otherwise:-)
So long as OS/X is bound exclusivily to some "Apple specific" hardware, I do not think it makes much difference in terms of x86 GNU/Linux desktop adoption whether that hardware is PPC or X86.
Well, that's kinda the point behind the X86 switch. It won't be "Apple specific" anymore in the respect that you can install and run Windows natively on Apple hardware. Linux will always get a shot at switchers first because it's free and doesn't require a hardware investment. With X86 OSX though, switchers can buy an Apple and still install Windows if necessary. It won't be detrimental to Linux. It will simply help level the playing field for Apple. Switchers who once ruled out the Mac because the hardware wouldn't run Windows will now have the option.
You could always get a free dev version with a free membership to ADC. The key was time limited, but they always posted a new one at about the time the old one would expire.
regardless of who holds the biggest responsibility for damages.
I'd say Congress holds the biggest responsibility in this case with their current copyright laws. Can we sue them for damages as a result of their asinine copyright legislation yet? No? Now see, that's the kind of tort reform I want, not GWB's version where I can't sue the automobile manufacturer for making exploding cars.
It's not that I have anything against a little editorializing, but these don't even seem like relevant comments any more...
Welcome to America, where anyone with extensive study in keg stands and beer bongs can graduate with a journalism degree. It's not just the headlines. Whole articles are being written by space cadets, and apparently editors could care less. Look no further than the one linked in the summary:
Apple has said it would not allow Apple OS X to run on any machine other than an Apple Macintosh. It seems likely, however, that users would be able to use Windows on Macs running on Intel. This may motivate some devious users to steal Mac software, which would be a new type of problem for Apple, Kay said. Previously, Apple has not had to deal with these kinds of security concerns, since Mac software previously only would run on a Mac.
I have serious doubts that Roger Kay at IDC said anything of the sort. I'm guessing the article's author Rhonda Ascierto doesn't grok computers and misquoted the hell out of Roger Kay. More likely, Roger mentioned something about the possibility that Mac OS X (Not Apple OS X, Rhonda) might be reverse engineered to run on a commodity hardware and it was turned into "W00T! Now we can pirate teh Mac warez!!!1oneone!11"
Learn to expect this from mainstream American journalism. It's sensationalistic, sloppy, and factually inaccurate. Line your bird cages with it.
I know a number of Mac users who will buy early rather than wait. In their minds, the switch to Intel is a colossal blunder. More than that, it's pure heresy. Additionally, they do not want to re-invest in their software or be stuck running their current apps under emulation. The logical conclusion for them is to buy one last nice high end PPC Mac before 'the end' and using that for at least six years or so. If Apple doesn't attract new blood after the switch, there may be a reverse Osborne effect.
Former president Clinton? Is that you? ;-)

Why now? Oh yeah, the Supreme Court just ruled they aren't common carriers. Enjoy being fed high bandwidth their way.

regular customers would get level 1 or level 0. (Web and mail access, no incoming ports, etc.)
Then it would be a customer's decision to apply for a higher level. maybe pass a test
Obviously, that's not going to work. But hey, maybe you could get that idea legislated. I'm sure the MPAA and RIAA would be willing to lobby for it.
