I don't hate Microsoft. Why would I? It makes little sense to hate a company that makes a product that I prefer not to use. I see lots of new cars that I think are very ugly on the road every day but do I hate the people who make them? Do I go around wishing that some other car company will put them out of business, so that they never take another breath again?... I've never visited Apple's headquarters, but I doubt their engineers sit around day after day with their lips stuck out, complaining about how they hate Microsoft.
I doubt Apple engineers complain long, loud and daily. Officially Apple and MS are partners, but I'll bet I know what drives the people at Apple to create new and better products. We're talking about Microsoft: The company that was convicted of monopoly abuse of an illegal fashion and got off with less than a slap on the wrist. And yes, when I see a Ford Explorer rolling down the road, I think about the Firestone incident and the 119 people who died to protect an executive's bank account. If Ford Motor Company ceases operations tomorrow, I won't shed any tears.
Do corporations exist to make money for shareholders? Sure, but they exist primarily to shield shareholders from liability. On a large scale, that leads directly to criminal negligence, monopoly abuse, and class action settlements for vouchers. Don't try to paint corporations as the holy savior around here. We're not buying it.
Well, at least with the Mac OS, the dialogs are better. Under windows, everything looks the same... "Blah blah blah, 'No' 'Yes'" whereas with a Mac it's more like "Blah Blah Blah, 'Abort Operation' 'Nuke My System'". And not having descriptive button names isn't the only problem. Windows gives you dialogs for EVERYTHING. Whether there's a problem or not, you get these pointless little dialogs like "Operation Succeeded 'OK'". Generally, on a Mac, you only get a dialog if there is an immediate need for user input.
Well, one thing spammers are really good at is compromising Windows machines and setting up thousands of fake email accounts. Do the math, 1000 addresses, 1000 mailing lists. At 1 penny per list per address, 1,000,000 pennies = $10,000. Not bad for a few hours work. That pays better than spam. The idea is simply stupid.
Well, it's that or be sued by the Church of Scientology for copyright infringement associated with spreading other XNU myths... so we're sticking with the microkernel thing;-)
Buy HP hardware (Or any PC manufacturer for that matter). Open box. Boot machine. Decline license. Return machine open box for a full refund. Be refused. Say "And I quote, 'IF YOU DO NOT AGREE, DO NOT INSTALL OR USE THE PRODUCT; YOU MAY RETURN IT TO YOUR PLACE OF PURCHASE FOR A FULL REFUND.' It's right there at the top of the license." Be refused a full refund again. Return home, wipe drive, install linux, and use machine. File a report with the better business bureau online. Follow up as necessary. Keep the BBB report unresolved as long as you have not been refunded the full purchase price of the Windows installation. Continue to do so for each and every PC you purchase.
HP only had 50 refund issues last year. That's frickin' pathetic guys. I know more than 50 of you bought an HP last year. You can file a complaint online. It won't take much of your time and if the PC manufacturers are going to rip you off for $85 every time you get a new machine, you should at least make them earn it. They'll have to hire new help to deal with the complaints. Paying an extra $85 is like paying sales tax a second time. It's probably greater than the hardware manufacturers' profit margin on cheaper machines. If PC manufacturers start getting tens of thousands of complaints they might just go to bat for you. HP only received 1500 some odd complaints last year regarding ALL issues. Make those 50 refund complaints explode out to 5000+. That should get their attention. If Americans aren't getting Linux machines, it is because Americans aren't demanding them.
Hmmpf, and here I thought Jim Crow causes gun laws. Silly me. Gun control isn't racist. It's just those damned 'inner city gang members' bringing it on themselves. Damned white kids dealin' smack and shootin' up the hood.
A lot of arguments about the PATRIOT Act (which I do think desperately needs radical revision) are very light on facts.
A good example is the article here. "One hearing disclosed police invoked the Patriot Act 108 times in a 22-month period" would be a much more useful piece of information if we got a chance to see whether the cases in question did, in fact, involve terrorism.
Actually, the quote is misleading and irrelevant. Sec. 213 "Authority for delaying notice of the execution of a warrant" does not expire. Ever. I've posted this before, but I think it bears repeating...
The US government has been trying to slip this one by us since well before 9/11. It was shot down at least three times in recent history. First it was the Cyberspace Electronic Security Act (CESA). Then the Clinton administration tried to push it through with a meth bill. When that failed, they tried to sneak in through as an amendment to a bankruptcy bill. All the while, the DOJ, led by Reno, was claiming to already have this power without any need for additional legislation in the Nicodemo Scarfo case.
Well, with the PATRIOT ACT, they finally got it. Your only hope now is to have it shot down in the Supreme Court. Both parties have been pushing for this for some time. The People had already spoken. We consistently and emphatically told them 'hell no'. It's clear that Congress has stopped representing the people.
For the light side, you have to ssh in and edit a text file..
No, that was before Apple got ahold of it and improved the UI. You can see light saber version ten (LS X) in action in Pink Five Strikes Back. [Pink saber resistant boots sold separately.]
I got my brain on hype.
Tonight'll be your night.
I got this long-assed knife,
and your neck looks just right.
My adrenaline's pumpin'.
I got my stereo bumpin'.
I'm 'bout to kill me somethin'
A pig stopped me for nuthin'!
Cop killer, better you than me.
Cop killer, f**k police brutality!
Cop killer, I know your mama's grievin'
(f**k her)
Cop killer, but tonight we get even.
Yeah, it's those damned colleges that are corrupting the moral values of America's youth while the RIAA stands for all that is just and good.
I'll show you mine if you show me yours? Last time I checked, kids weren't being prosecuted for playing doctor. So let's say the DA gets a conviction. What's the punishment? Send her to prison where she can really be molested? It seems obvious to me that the law here is not designed to 'protect the children' so much as it is designed to prevent teenage pregnancies that cost the government lots of money.
More to the topic, the tracking sex offenders for life bit is just political grandstanding. Do they even have the hardware lined up? What does it look like? How much does it cost? How long does the battery last on a full charge? Does the parole officer have to collect the GPS data from the individuals or does it 'phone home.' Given the reliability and speed of mobile phone data transfers, either solution will probably suck. Assuming it's a bracelet sort of device, how hard would it be for the criminal involved to simply cover the device with his tinfoil hat before heading out to molest some kids for the evening. Even if the 'client' hardware is flawless, the server side of things can't be much more useful than passive tracking. There are 200 registered offenders in Citrus county where Jessica Lunsford was murdered. There are 2075 in Miami-Dade. There must be tens of thousands in the entire state. We can't even scale to those numbers to prevent fratricide among our military men and they are assumed to be cooperative in the process. Now try it with a group of individuals who would prefer not to be tracked. Even a fraction of the total number sex offenders in FL are going to be VERY hard to keep up with. News for nerds? Where are the benchmarks? The hardware specs? Oh, there aren't any? Isn't that interesting.
In short, this appears to be nothing more than political "feel good" vaporware, and yet another instance where the "moral majority" is jumping on a local issue in Florida to score points without accomplishing anything. Cheney isn't running in 2008. Jeb has started the campaign early. Are the Democrats trying to point out the obvious flaws? Nope. It looks like they are going to stand by and get their ass handed to them again.
Always the strong female character who is "not good at math, but very good with people".
Strange, but I just read that same thing a few posts up referring to management types, not girls. Sounds like a lot of men like to use this excuse too.
"I'm a people person. I deal with the customers so the engineers don't have to. Don't you get that? What the hell is wrong with you people!" -- Office Space
chmod it so that he can't play and tell him he can play again as soon as he a) gets his grades back up, or b) figures out a privilege escalation attack to chmod it back. Either way you'll be proud as hell.;-)
What country are you living in? Last time I looked, the United States was approaching $8,000,000,000,000.00 in debt. We're broke and begging to borrow more daily.
we just don't spend it on things most Americans really want it spent on. For the cost of the Iraq war you could have
purchased a $150,000 home for each and every one of the 1.3 Million homeless children in America and still have enough left over to furnish those homes.
or at least made a dent in the debt.
You misspelled budget deficit. If you took all the money from all the years Bush has spent in Iraq and Afghanistan, it would amount to about half of last years budget deficit. It wouldn't touch the debt with a ten foot pole. Even if you earmarked it specifically for the interest on the debt you would come up short.
If we could only get rid of farm subsidies we would be doing this already.
Because doing so would be such a great idea: Outsource our food supply to a potentially hostile nation.
b) Consume Everything.
Except the services we sell to all the other countries who have no clue how to efficiently produce their goods.,
Whoa... wait a second. Isn't efficient production of goods *the whole point* of outsourcing? I know you don't mean to say Taiwan doesn't know how to produce electronics efficiently or Japan doesn't know how to produce cars efficiently do you?
build their power plants,
If I'm not mistaken, China is the R&D of the world when it comes to pebble bed reactors these days...
feed their ever growing populations,
Well, you have me there. We are the bread basket of the world here in America... though that might have something to do with those farm subsidies.
and cure their sick.
Strange. I've been reading reports of people flying to India for surgery because it's just as good, but cheaper there. And aren't the Chinese on the forefront of stem cell therapies these days? I suppose you're screwed in the event of malpractice, but hey, malpractice insurance is one of the reasons it's more expensive in America.
We currently have the best university system available (with the exception of possibly England - but theirs is not as widely avaliable) and that translates into the best educated country in the world.
How are you defining "best?" I'd love to see the numbers on that. According to the data in the CIA World Factbook, we usually make the top 20, but I don't see the USA ranking first in much of anything.
Which translates into valuable services.
How so? Education spending doesn't directly translate into a better educated population. If it did, the USA would be much higher up those CIA lists. For the same reason, even if you were to convince me of all points above, I'm not following your logic here.
And I would much rather live in a country full of doctors and biologists and engineers than a country of assembly line workers and farmers. The aforementioned jobs all translate to a higher quality of life.
Well, there is that little matter of our 500 billion dollar trade deficit. We obviously can't afford that higher quality of life you mention because either a) we aren't charging enough our services, b) we are paying too much for those foreign made manufactured goods, or c) our services are not valuable enough to compensate for the loss of our less brainy jobs. Besides, farming and factory work is as much an honest days work as setting a bone or designing a wing that is 0.3% more efficient that the one we had last year. Is a profession less noble when it doesn't require a university degree? I don't think so. Furthermore, I think it's condescending and snobbish to suggest otherwise.
c) Print lots and lots of worthless dollar bills.
Is a dollar bill worth anything right now anyway? It is just good faith and the accepted exchangable value.
Actually, it is worth something because it is the only currency OPEC accepts. Well, at least until Saddam started accepting Euros. We pre-empted a little 'terrorism' and set that straight though.
We'd better hope that extinction event isn't a starquake that sterilizes everything within 10 light years of the source. Voyager has been flying for almost 30 years and it's what, about half a light day away?
Does anyone REALLY think we are going to let N. Korea to continue to exist in it's current regime.
Do you really think China would continue to prop up the US dollar and fund America's war machine if we pissed them off? China would kick our American asses back into the great depression for thinking about it. Considering America is:
$8 Trillion dollars in debt
Dependent on foreign loans, primarily from China and Japan because our leadership can't balance a f'ing checkbook
Dependent on China/Korea/Tiawan to manufacture all our fancy electronics, cloths, consumer goods, and well... everything else
Then yes, I do think N. Korea will continue unhindered by American interference.
I'm assuming that currency devaluation is what your particular species of nutjob is worried about, BTW.
He may have been factually incorrect in places, but do we need the name calling? After watching the dollar v. euro for the past couple of years, I'd say concerns about currency devaluation in America are valid. As long as we have our massive trade deficit, things aren't getting any better. Further, if OPEC decided to make the switch to Euros the way Saddam did then governments world wide would no longer be forced to have dollar reserves to buy their oil. A rush to dump newly unnecessary dollar reserves on the market would result in a catastrophic crash of the dollar's value. I'll leave the likelihood of that happening for you two to debate.

Ok, so software patents suck big time. What do we do about it? Why not start a Free Patent Foundation (FPF). All patents owned by the FPF are freely licensed to anyone with the following restriction: Any party that makes use of a FPF patent library is required by the license to cross license their entire patent library with the FPF. Using a FPF patent constitutes acceptance of the license. Corporations would simply be blind sided because they are advised to NOT research patents or face triple damages. Now, when they violate our patents, ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US!;-) Either that, or they have to stop shipping their product. If these companies really do patent 'defensively' as many say they do, then they shouldn't mind a bit now, should they? Once they are in the fold, all patents created by them are added to the FPF. Of course, I'm not a patent lawyer, so feel free to inform me that I'm a clueless moron...
IMHO farmers will get up when there is enough light to get done whatever needs doing. This whole thing sounds a lot like "get the stereo that goes up to 11 caus it's louder".
No. See this is actually a throwback to when lots of kids actually did farm chores. Paw didn't need ta hire no hands 'cause he had 10 youngins to do the work. Cain't hav'em off learnin' while thars chores ta be done. Pitchforks, plows, and real back breaking work. Didn't you ever wonder why school kids got three months off in the summer? Not a problem these days though. Large corporations do all the farming (and a good share of tax cheating) with illegal immigrant labor while kids think milk comes from the grocery store and parents wouldn't dream of letting little Johnny handle anything sharper than a plush foam bat.
Ahhh progress! It's great to live in an age where you get to be a wage slave to your 'pay till you die' interest only Smart Loan(TM).
