  7. AFM on New High-Speed Nano Imaging Device · · Score: 5, Informative

I work with an AFM, and it's a very tempermental machine. The tips are SO delicate, if you look at them wrong, they break and are useless ($10 down the drain). They can only be used once.

It's a slow process finding the resonance frequency, using the slow piezos to move the tip to the near field, and slowly scanning the area. One of the advantages of AFM is that it can be done on completely wet samples.

There's another technology called NSOM. that does much the same thing. Many NSOMs are custom made. We use a Scanning Electron Microscope to check the tips we make to see if they are suitable. Tips are made by slowly stretching a glass wire inder high temperature until the break, giving you 2 NSOM tips.

    Neat stuff.

In the sequel novel to "DO Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" it was explained that the original Roy Batty on whom the replicant was based had a genetic mutation that prevented him from experiencing fear, thus making him an excellent soldier and assassin. 21. Re:Sounds nice, but the dentist told me... on Army Develops New Chewing Gum · · Score: 5, Informative

I work in the field of dental research. (I work in a lab, so I never have to dig in anyone's mouth, ew).

The thing that really helps prevent cavities in your SALIVA. The bacteria in your mouth, streptococcus mutans, eats the sugar in your mouth. A byproduct of this is lactic acid, which breaks down the mineral in your enamel and dentin. Saliva acts as an acid buffer to prevent this. In addition there is a protein "web" called the pellicle layer which also protects teeth from acid and erosion.

Chewing gum stimulates saliva flow, which buffers the acid. Heck, chewing on plain old beeswax will help.

  24. I've seen them in person. on Carbon Nanotube Memory on the Way · · Score: 1

I am in charge of the SEM on our campus, and we have people from physics over all the time, and last month we had a guy over who was making carbon nanotubes.

The ones I saw were made from Acetylene gas and ammonia. A tiny particle of Iron starts the process of tube formation. The carbon adheres to the base of the iron particle and builds up from there, the iron particle determining the diameter of the tube.

Reminded me of the smelly back snake fireworks I used to like as a kid.
Except that they are a lot smaller. And don't stink. And don't need to be started with a match.
    And can do neat things.
