  1. I don't know what art is... on Roger Ebert Backs Down On Video Games As Art · · Score: 1

I don't know what art is...or so I used to believe but now I have come to two firm conclusions, one serious and one humorous.

If it invokes an emotional response within the observer it is art.

This makes art relative to the observer, and that's the way it really should be.

If it's in colour it's pornography, if it's in black and white it's art

I once saw life sized prints of Helmet Newton's work in the Barbican, but thankfully they were all black and white; a museum is no place to be staring at 6" tall blonde bombshells in the nude with a pair of viscous dogs straining against their leashes.

Actually, I don't think it really matters if the sites hosted files or linked to them. This is clear use of a combination of fear, battery and good old fashioned bullying. They don't even have to win the cases since they can take the sites down straight away, confiscate the equipment, reclaim the domain names, etc. They can then use their significant resources in a war of attrition on the pirates.

Sites that link to torrents are treading a very thin line, and it's only the fact that Google and every other search engine as well as many smaller players on the web require the use of links to potentially illegal sites that protects them. Certainly the government can simply ignore the act that a google search will happily return the same torrent files as the pirate sites but it will still seem duplicitous.

An hour for a torrent is absurb. Grab a copy of Vuze and add whichever special tracker sites you like. Type the name of the show you want into the search box and it searches all of them at once. Pick one that is shiny and green and has some comments attached saying it's legit. If 1000 people are DLing it, it's usually fine.

I'd love to hand over cash to Netflix or Hulu or whoever can provide me with a solid IPTV product, but I live in the third world...Australia.

    Here's how it should work:

    * A reasonable fee per month for access to everything - perhaps with some extra cost / show, it's still got to be cheaper than a date with a hot girl
    * The box just freaking works - no faults, jitter, lag, or pauses
    * Ability to skip ads, fast forward at least
    * It "records" all my series stuff and has Tivo like abilities to suggest films I might like
    * It doesn't assume that because I like Firefly I also like Buffy
    * My ISP doesn't fist me at billing time
    * Choice of format / file size e.g. some for PSP and some for my PS3 on a big screen

I just want to be able to come home, turn on the box, and have everything that is new all ready to go. Every new episode of current series are downloaded, as are the movies, docos, etc. Also, it would be cool to program my own "virtual" channel(s) which play old sci-fi shows I like, movies I haven't seen for a couple of years, etc. Finally, it should recognise content I already own and not charge me for watching it e.g. I have copies of Lexx on dvd but want it to put them onto my virtual channel at 9PM each night...it shouldn't charge any extra fee if I can reasonably prove I have the DVDs on hand (full integration of entertainment).

Indeed. While Carmack did so much to improve the quality of game engines he did absolutely nothing to improve gameplay. In Castle Wolfenstein we play the role of a gun toting hero who moves about levels picking up ammo, shooting monsters who can all be defeated by use of either a strafe, or corner LoS, and grabbing health packs.

By the time Quake III was released we found ourselves in darkened corridors, picking up ammo and health packs, shooting monsters that came in groups of 1-3 and could be defeated by strafing or use of a corner to LoS.

It looked better but was essentially exactly the same crap he'd been handing out for over a decade.

I have to disagree, this isn't tech 10 years too early, but more like 20 years too late. Wave seems to simply be an integrated toy set of IRC, e-mail, media player and some other assorted things we've had for decades. It's IRC / MSN with widgets in the conversation and realtime updates - nothing to see, move along. I can see some businesses pounding it into the square hole just because they mistakenly believe they need it...and a vanishingly small number who do really need it. Some enthusiasts will get their friends to play with it for a few weeks - then find themselves alone in a wave app wondering why they are getting email responses instead or realtime wave.

It's interesting, and a decent toy, but expect uptake to either be very slow or not at all.

  24. What is art? on Roger Ebert On Why Video Games Can Never Be Art · · Score: 1

Ebert is only expressing an opinion, and like every other opinion it is beyond the bounds of reasoning or bargaining. Opinions are not fact, just a qualitative stance held by the person stating them. For instance, no matter how much I screamed and ranted at him that THX 1138 was wankish art student dribble which drew heavily from the trurly original works that proceeded it, he would no doubt defend his stance.

Now for my opinion. I spent a lot of time thinking about the question "What is art?" and have come to a reasonable conclusion for myself. Art is anything that can provoke an emotional response in the viewer. I saw a lot of art in Europe, some of which was moving and other pieces less so - but perhaps they moved other viewers.

If playing any of the many games out there makes you feel something then it's art - no matter what some movie critic says.
