How many times have you seen code licensed under GPL v 1 or later? The "or later" part is so the FSF etc can edit it to say "v 3 or later" for future releases. That's the point of it.

U2 is signed by Universal. Bono is a good friend with Steve Jobs. I believe they did the U2/iPod commercials for free (although they certainly got paid for the ipod sales). iTMS has had a lot of cross promotions with various musicians (celebrity play lists, exclusive tracks, early released tracks, hyping concert tours, etc). Would Universal musicians revolt? Some might not be impressed.

Ever wondered why the crime rate is so low in Canada? It's not because guns are outlawed. No, it's simply because welfare helps ensure that someone that hit the bottom of the barrel will not have to turn to crime in order to survive.

Bullshit. Montana, which has an ethnic makeup similar to Canada, has a lower crime rate than Canada does. Philadelphia, which has an ethnic makeup decidedly different than Canada has a much higher crime rate.

Actually, AT&T fucking up is good for apple. The other cells turned down Apple. Why shouldn't they? Steve Jobs wanted concessions and the cell market is hard to break into, especially for a $600 phone. After Friday's sales figures come out, they'll regret that. The Apple/AT&T 5 year exclusive deal depends on AT&T providing a certain level of quality -- a level they can't meet. Apple can now break their AT&T exclusive deal and the other cell providers will be on it like CmdrTaco on a 12 year old boy.

  22. Re:Flat/Fair tax on Congress to Revisit Virtual Goods Taxation · · Score: 1

Dividends are already taxed. Capital gains are already taxed. During the .com boom, a lot of people converted their stock options to stock (assuming it would keep going up), which the IRS taxed as a capital gains. When their stock dropped to 0, they were stuck with a large tax bill and no capital gains to show for it. Trying to tax unrealized capital gains will have the same problem and discourage long term investments. It's a horrible idea, just like salary caps.

Sure, a handful of people have excessive benefits and golden retirement plans. But that's hardly a reason to fuck over everyone else. In 1969, Congress was appalled that a handful of wealthy individuals were following the IRS's rules and able to avoid paying income tax. That's why we're stuck with the Alternative Minimum Tax.

PS: In the mid 90s, Congress tried to limit excessive corporate salaries by making only the first $4 million a tax deductible business expense. (Of course, this limit didn't apply to hollywood.) The response was an increase in stock options and retirement plans, which are tax deductible.
