    Derek Smalls replies:
Dear "Mike"-- I don't assume anybody on the web uses their real names anymore -- the reason we set up Tapster.com in the first place was so that we could sue ourselves when the quantity of downloads of our songs reached the point where it could be argued that we were losing sales. Unfortunately, our right to use the name Tapster lapsed before the download total reached that number. So, yours might be a fine backup plan. Best regards, Derek.

  8. STOP AIM on Hints for Planning a Network Gaming Marathon? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Maybe this doesn't apply so much to large gatherings where # of people on a server at any given time isn't a problem, but for those interested in smaller LAN gatherings, this may be helpful.

Keep the internet connection (whether it be modem or router) near to where you sit, and have it unplugged except for patches. Why? Because a lot of people are morons, it's hard to find an ideal group. One time, we wanted to play NWN but the kid who had the server cracked (unfortuantely people who buy games like me are a minority and thus we needed a cracked server to play) said that he "needed" to talk on AIM. And no, he couldn't tell us where we could find the crack.

This has happened dozens of times to me before I wised up. One kid had his semi-girlfriend dump him on AIM at a lan and he spent the rest of the night being a whining pussy. Like I wanna hear about that when I'm at a party. Story in point, crap like AIM and mindless websurfing can convince people to forget that they're there to play games, and in smaller LANs that's a real bitch when you're trying to fill up a server.

Or maybe I'm just anal about this?

  25. Migrating to Apache 2.x on News from ApacheCon US 2002 · · Score: 5, Interesting

A nice read, if a bit light, but I still have to wonder how the "Migrating to Apache 2.0" seminar went. I mean, I started my webserving hobby at the 2.0 stage, but I actually reverted back to 1.3.7 because most of the side projects that make Apache so versataile just aren't there yet. I am eager to upgrade to a 2.x series (technology for technology's sake...I love upgrading things just because), but at this time for a small website, I'm just not seeing the necessity.

My point being, although I am coming to it in a roundabout fashion...what are the benefits for the average (or even above average) website migrating over to 2.0 at this time? Just seems sorta pointless to me right now.

Of course, that also goes back to the "Alpha Geeks" thing O'Reilly talked about. Hopefully the fully usable apache 2 goodness will filter down to my level sometime :).
