Me: Yeah, but a pirated copy of Word is also free, and also screws Microsoft...
Another friend: He has a point... cheats Microsoft even more, that way.
Relatedly, sentence adverbs (also known as "disjuncts", I just found out from wikipedia) exist, and are both useful and quite commonly used.
On the other hand, I'd argue that the sentence used above as an example isn't actually a good one: words are frequently allowed to move around in English sentence by particular rules. Thus, "Quickly, run this letter to the mailbox" is equivalent to "Run this lettere to the mailbox quickly" - in both cases, "quickly" modifies the verb phrase "run this letter to the mailbox". Better examples would use adverbs such as "honestly", "seriously", "sadly", or other, similar words.
Really good novel: Code of the Lifemaker, by James Hogan. The premise is, of course, robots being left to themselves in the right condition, and evolving in exactly the same way biological systems evolve.
I do the opposite - the people I have in mm address book are exactly those people who I email so frequently I'd like to be able to type, for instance, "ea", and have it fill in the email for me. Mostly, these people are professors I email homework to frequently... I'd be pretty pissed if something autosent spam to them in my name.
Almost anything can be a characteristic of Asperger's. That is why, despite having profited in various ways from having parents who found something to label me with, I think the whole concept is a stupid one. If all it means is that you're a little weird, in a society where being weird hurts your chances at certain things, then it isn't really useful.
I "have" Asperger's, and I like loud music fine, as long as it is, in fact, actually music. Note: some metal counts, some doesn't. Of course, if I'm trying to relax, I won't listen to loud things... if I'm trying to burn off some steam, though, I will.
You know, that would actually be an amazingly cool idea. If someone were to compile a list of bands who've signed on to major labels, and drop boxes into which it would be possible to send checks, I actually would go out of my way a little bit to send artists money each time I downloaded an album.
Note: every time I see a small band live, and the guy selling the cds after the show is actually one of the members of the band, I don't hesitate to put money in the guy's hand, because I like supporting music. It's just that when I buy a cd from a label, I'm not supporting music - I'd almost be tempted, even, to say that I'm actively doing it a disservice.
Hey, a random number generator was my keygen for Starcraft... I actually owned a legal copy, but lost the cd key. Thus, for the past almost 10 years, whenever I need to reinstall Starcraft, I type in some random numbers. It always works after a couple tries.
I'm aware that you're being sarcastic. Nonetheless, as the topic of conservapedia has come up, I want to spread this link: http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/languagelog/archive s/004258.html#more
Great article about the current state of the wiki, with respect to linguistic issues.
Yeah. I go to google for search, 100% of the time.
On the other hand, I still use yahoo for things like checking what movies are out, cause I know their information on stuff like that is easy to find, and that they'll conveniently link me to a random sampling of reviews on each movie. Yahoo is still good for some things - just not for searching. Wonder how long it'll take them to drop out of search entirely, and just concentrate on what they provide that google doesn't?
Either that or google will continue the trend of trying to be good at everything, and Yahoo will die there too. Course, the same part is, unlike most companies that try that, google actually does seem to be good at everything it tries.
I think you missed the point: DRM is a fantastic chance for new bands, who are selling music on their own and thus without DRM forced upon them by a major label, to gain listeners among that minority of listeners who care enough to go out in search of good, DRM-free music to listen to.
You could also use a program like Virtual CD, that lets you create a virtual cd burner, insert a virtual cdr, tell iTunes to burn to that virtual cdr, then rip from it. It's pretty shiny.
That and, if Vista doesn't ever stop sucking, I guarantee you that someone will figure out a way to reverse engineer DX10, and provide us with an emulator for it. It's just the way these things work.
Good. I was really hoping someone would have mentioned The Abyss by now, or I'd have been sad.
God, that was a good movie. Even better book, incidentally (only novelization I've ever read that was better than the movie it was based on!)
No, it's more like, someone wrote something bad about someone on a piece of paper. I know! Let's try to sue the paper manufacturers for providing the slanderer the opportunity!
To play devil's advocate for a bit: I played WoW for a couple months, last summer. On an average day, I probably a couple hours or so. Some days I only played an hour or so, and some days I didn't play at all. The most I ever played was maybe 5 hours in a day, and that was only once or twice. At the end of the couple months, my character was level 28. Yes, I'm aware time spent per level goes up exponentially, but still, if I'd gotten the game near when it came out, and played that much consistently instead of dropping it when summer ended, I'm sure I'd hate at least one character to 60 by now.
Yes, I do have friends who leveled to 60 is like a month, yes they did play it way too much, and yes, it would be nice to see "casual gamer" mean "someone who didn't play ridiculous amounts of it a day". But it's certainly possible to get to a decent level without playing a bajillion hours a week (of course, once you get to level 60, I hear, you pretty much have to join a guild and play a bajillion hours a week if you want to be competitive in gear; but that's beside the point).

Whereas my first thought was something along the lines of, of course... night elves aren't the same as humans, and the alliance races can't even talk to the horde races. And all 6 are more similar than, say, the protoss are to the zerg.

Can you tell I'm interested in linguistics?

No offense, but Bob Dylan was crap. Not that I like Britney much, but I'd rather listen to a full cd of hers than a full Dylan cd.
The others you mentioned are good, though. And I certainly agree with the gist of your argument.

Nah, most of the best audiovisual software is free, anyway. Why use anything else, when VLC does everything right? ;)
Meanwhile, Castle Infinity is completely free, is way more fun than Castle Penguin, and is completely free.
Just thought I'd throw that out there.

In other, more important news, Jeph Jacques also isn't dead yet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Jeph_Jacques)

Who cares about Ackbar? When I hear the word "trap", I think Firefly:
Wash: "Inara...nice to see her again."
Zoe: (beat) "So...trap?"
Mal: "Trap."
Zoe: "We goin' in?"
Mal: "Ain't but a few hours out."
Wash: (confused) "Yeah, but...remember the part where it's a trap?"
Yeah. I go to google for search, 100% of the time.

I'd go with carrier pigeon - the protocol has already been written, after all.
Hey - gorging in Natural Selection is a lot of fun.

Oh, right. That kind of race.
Which great indie band cover are we talking about here? I want a copy...
