    What would happen to the millions of peoples' personal data that Doubleclick owns?

    Who could guarantee that it would remain secure, and not fall into the wrong hands?

    I just dug up some CD-Rs I burned from 1998 and they were fine also.

    That seems like overkill to me.

    I think I'll burn copies every few years before I start burying my media in my yard...

    Remember that disposal of toxic and other difficult to dispose of waste comes out of your taxes so one would think it is in your interest to keep waste disposal costs low.

    Where does what you describe take place? Under what level of government -- fed, state, county, local? I live in the US, and I'm not aware of taxes subsidizing this type of waste disposal.

    I've heard of grants from various environmental agencies at different levels, but the ones I've seen are more of a small-scale R&D or "experimental" business type of funding.

    Yes, and your average judge or juror don't know a whole lot about how genetic evidence works, either.

    That's why expert witnesses are called to testify - to explain complicated things in layman's terms.
