When I saw the article title, I got my hopes up thinking that "gearing up" might mean expanding their network capacity to handle the influx of new users switching to get the iPhone. But instead, all they are doing is adding people to SELL the iPhone. In other words, they are hoping to sell the crap out of it and then walk away with pockets full while their already heavily loaded network struggles to cope with the load. I'm already getting "network busy" frequently on At&t/cinglular when I try to make calls...I can't imagine what it will be like when there are 10,000 more users in the area running around with iPhones. I for one plan to switch off Cingular as soon as my contract is up.
Its been mentioned all over the place. The Toureg is the only TDI model available in 2007 model year. Check the VW USA website and you will see no TDI model options currently listed for Jetta, Beetle and Rabbit. They do plan to introduce a new Jetta TDI for 2008 at least though that does meet the new requirements. Linky: http://blog.myarchive.us/?p=307
If you are extra curious, check out the Jeep USA website too...and notice that the Liberty no longer lists a Diesel model either.
One other thing to note...the reason the US fortwo is only rated at 40MPG is that it is hobbled with a bigger engine and extra gear that is different then the European models that get 60+Mpg. Yet another example of weird US regulations ensuring that the cars we get consume more fuel then they ought to.
No, the diesel is not available in the US due to our psycho emissions laws that allow the gas gusselers to stay on the market while the most fuel-efficient vehicles are banned. The more efficient Honda gas engines were banned some years ago and almost all the efficient diesels were banned this year (you can no longer buy a new VW TDI car in the US). Even the Jeep Liberty Diesel was banned from the US market...though they allowed the less fuel efficient Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel to stay because it's in a bigger weight class. Thought VW does promise to be back next year with some technology that gets around the dumb standards. There is alot of PR out there about how the new diesels will be "cleaner" but if you read the fine print, the overall emissions will be the same as before...they just have some "catch and release" technology that averages out when things are actually sent out the tailpipe so there are no spikes of emissions from revving and such to trip the thresholds of the emission laws. I repeat, the amount of emissions from the tailpipe will be the same or more as before! The new diesels don't actually help the environment in any way...just makes the diesels sold here more expensive and complicated. Which of course puts efficient and biofuel friendly cars out of reach for more people and forces them to buy more polluting cars and thus hurt the environment more. The emissions laws here were clearly written by oil companies to make the most efficient and most biofuel friendly cars illegal and sell more of their fuel. There is no other explanation for how they target diesels and efficient gas cars while not touching the 15MPG beasts.
I downloaded safari for windows and I can't even bring up a web page in it. It defaults to apple's website when I start it but I can't see all the content and most of the buttons don't seem to work and are missing their labels. Typing in a URL results in no response. the only thing I can do is end the task. Or maybe it's just sooo fast that I can't actually see it working.
Hmmm, maybe Apple noticed that alot of their super secrets were showing up on engaget minutes after notifying internal resources? A few carefully crafted fake juicy bits emailed around later and they should be able to narrow down who the leak is. I'm sure floggings and/or sackings would then ensue.
I will freely admit that when I saw the headline I was quite eager to click and read terminator references...or post one myself if not every possible angle had not already been exhausted!
Carry it on your bus eh? Just in case the bus crashes and your leg is violently severed from your body? Now THAT is being prepared!
Anyway, I don't get why everyone gets so up in arms about testing stuff. If you want to find out if it works, the only good way is to have some brave volunteers try it out and see what happens. It's dumb to jump into something blindly. It's dumb to fully trust something before it's effects have been scientifically observed over time in the indended working evironment (in this case the human body). And it's also dumb to dismiss something because testing it might lead to the testee's death. Progress very rarely comes without risks.
Either you are judging SUVs solely by the H2 and H3 and ignoring the average ones completely, or trying to be funny. Your statement describes the exact opposite of most any SUV except the hummers. I'll assume you were trying to be funny. Haha!
I wrestled some hogs this past weekend (covered in crisco no less) and can tell you right now: anything designated to wash hogs should be a GOOD THING!
Maybe I am not knowing the meaning of this "hogwash" word you are using...
For those that are wondering, it was a hog wrestling contest at a men's gathering. And yes I did get a Tshirt for doing it!:)
I ran windows 2000 server on my previous laptop for a long time. The only down side was that it didn't hibernate. Other then that it was a great dev environment and ran great.
Question #1: How just exactly are you supposed to "hug the ground"? Last time I checked, hugging something invovled wrapping your arms around it and the earth is a bit too big for me to wrap my arms around...don't know about you.
Question #2: How just exactly are you supposed to execute this "ground hugging" whist all the bones in your body are being broken?
Yes, gas is expensive but how is that and indicator of the economy? It's a negative influence on the economy, not the other way around. Appearantly in Soviet Russia Gas pays for you.
finally, how is the battle with terrorism an indicator of the economy? Right wrong or otherwise?
I'm not trying to support Bush, I will be as happy to see him go as most the rest of us. I'm just pointing out some serious flaws in the statement and logic here.
I sure don't want Vista. Trouble is that I only get server hardware from Dell. My favorite laptops come from HP which last time I checked was still fully on the Vista bandwagon. Hopefully HP will wake up and smell the stink though and follow Dell's example.
Is there not still a subduction zone going right through the bering straight? There is crust movement outside and inside the ring 'o fire.
On the point of disaster movies, I think Stallone already did one of these...though adding oil & gas pipelines along with major high voltage wires and trains to the tunnel just adds all sorts of opportunities for fun. I'm envisioning a sort of cross between "Volcano", "Under Siege 2: Dark territory", and "Daylight". Sly Stallone, Steven Segal and Tommy Lee Jones could all co-star.
When is Google going to start getting into the power business? Seems like it's a very key part of their operation. Maybe they should start devoting some R&D twards coming up with solutions to their power consuption problem. Could save the company millions and result in technology that makes them the end all ruler of everything.
OK, this gets a little complicated so bear with me as I try to go through it...
Summary: While the Democrats are jumping on the opportunity to bash Bush and company, it's really Bush and Company's own fault that there is any room to question the legality of it because they instituted some bad laws to begin with. In short, both sides are in the wrong on this one. The president dug himself into a mudhole to start and now the democrats are throwing more mud around to make the mess bigger.
Detail: To understand why there is any question of legality to begin with, we have to take a step back and look at the "patriot act". There is a provision of the "patriot act" that in essense allows attorneys appointed by the president to serve indefinately. It used to be attorneys had to be confirmed by congress after a period of time. This is just one very small, but significant breech of the balance of powers among many such items along with breeches of the rights of individual citizens that were dumped on us by the patriot act. Of course the patriot act was brought to us by none other then Bush and his administration. So basically the bad law making is coming back to bite him and the other side is rubbing it in. Of course the real solution to all this would be to repeal the patriot act so the balance of powers is restored...but instead all the polititions would rather mud sling and bash each other till the cows come home. So we are left with nothing more then a bunch of polititions on both sides that are more interested in politics then whats right for the country so much so that there is not even an aknowledgement of what the real root cause of this fiasco is.
1. There is no elegant offline viewing of email. When "on the go" I don't have access to an internet connection half the time so I can't read my gmail. (I don't want the overhead of the entire Google Desktop and that is a hack anyway). Plus, Gmail has been unavailable to me 3 times already this week (Error: please try back later).
2. While Google's triple redundant approach to backups sounds pretty good, what if they accidentally delete my mailbox? Stuff happens. A good solution to #1 would address this as a recent local copy would almost always exist somewhere for disaster recovery.
OK there is a 3rd but it's kinda minor. The Gmail threading mechanism is cool, but it makes printing a single email a pain in the buttocks. Usually I end up with 20 pages going to the printer when all I needed was the first two.
YES! I have seen video demonstrating lightning as a power source for a time machine built out of a Delorian. Seemed to work perfectly. Especially if you know where lightning is going to strike.

Already here for sale too (in Portland, OR at least) : http://www.oswegoluxury.com/cgi-bin/showroom.cgi?d _id=990&mode=listing&filter=make&make=287

Inquiring minds want to know.
How did this get modded insightful?

Employment still low? How is it then that the national unemployment rate is the lowest it's been in 5 years right now and getting close to being the lowest in well over 10 years. http://data.bls.gov/PDQ/servlet/SurveyOutputServl
Stock still down? How do you equate stock down = the dow just hitting a new record today? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3683270/

First state?
I thought Maine http://news.com.com/2100-7348_3-6153532.html already did this with Idaho and Washington following closely behind? Or have those laws not been enacted yet?

To answer your question in a word: "No"
I could give examples but it seems like a waste of keystrokes in this instance.
