  1. another option on Cable TV Versus Satellite TV? · · Score: 1

seriously though, a friend of mine used to have tv smashing parties every fourth of july (independence day) for about 10 years. He just stopped having the last year which totally sucked because so many people always looked forward to that particular party.

personally, I don't watch tv unless I'm at a bar or someone's house that has one on. I have an eyetv hooked up to my mac, but only use it as a device to play vcr tapes.

  2. I don't think their that bad on Disney's Disposable DVDs Deemed Duds · · Score: 4, Interesting

I thought they were a little over priced, but did buy one in october right before heading to the airport to fly back to chicago. I bought Frida and it was a great movie to watch on the plane and when I got home gave it to a neighbor to watch before it died. I wasn't going to return it.

they should sell these things in airports and the $7 wouldn't seem like a big deal at all. I also like some of the test marketing things they were doing down there that allowed pizza and other delivery services provide a dvd with your delivered meal- no worry about a return and it comes to you on demand. I didn't really appreciate the idea of the extra waste factor, but face it- we live in an extremely disposable world and I doubt one product would make a difference.

overall, I like the convenience the one time I tried it and found it to useful and assumed that once they were mass marketed the prices would become more reasonable.

I'm a veg-head and I personally would never get a card like that, but I don't think it's bad if they do a blanket broacast of a particular food product had I given them my info (I would personally not). As long as their not sharing the info beyond any agreement I have with them, then I don't see an issue.

But we're not charging and the isp (covad) requires email authentication through their servers for any smtp traffic- it would be very difficult to control web based mail.

we basically set it up as a free spot, as the owner didn't want to take any time away from the bartenders serving beer.

it's just a 1.5/384 adsl line from covad with a zyxel prestige 645 and a linksys wap54g- g is easy because it's fully compatble with b and only a slight price increase, I wouldn't mess with a.

zyxel makes a great 'hotspot in a box' that features the reciept printer and seems to do a great job overall. I think it was about $600 at that time.

funny, I submitted a very similar 'ask slashdot' in july and it was rejected- I don't even attept to submit stories anymore, I know someone else will eventually and it will be accepted.

Furthermore, the main reason that Apple hardware is more expensive is the "MacOS X Tax" -- their components certainly aren't more expensive than anyone else's.

I call bullshit on this one- have you used or handled many apple computer in the last few years?
They're a hell of a lot more solid then anything from the major pc manufacturers. They higher grade metals and do a better overall job of functionality. Take the 17" powerbook- it weighs 6.8 lbs and the closest pc that came out to copy it is over 10 lbs- that's a huge difference. It also has dvi, usb 2.0, firewire 400/800, bluetooth and 802.11G.

Have you seen and handled a new powermac system? I have a dual g5 and it's amazing- an aluminum case that will rival almost any pc case in quality and worksmanship.
the os is super stable and as a unit apples are much more hardware and software friendly. And you can pop a terminal open to the system at any time to get real work done.

I would highly suggest going to your local apple store and checking the machines out before you make another silly statement about the quality of apple hardware.

sidenote: I've only been an apple user for the last year and still do over 90% of my consulting on pc's, but that's changing.
