The best way, is to work for a multi national company and get a transfer to one of their offices in a country of your choice. This is how I ended up in Florida from Norway. I work for a large software corporation and was asked by my company if I wanted to relocate as they needed someone with my knowledge and experience here.

And by doing so, they have taken care of all the visa work. First I came over on an L-1, then later when I applied for permanent residency, I was transferred over to an H1-B when L-1 ran out of time and now I'm well into the last phase of the green card process, but it has taken over seven years so far to get there. Luckily they are using a law firm who's specialty is immigration so all I have to do, is to send over papers and sign the dotted line and get a PO for the cost.

Language skills are of course essential but I happen to speak seven different languages so I'm pretty well set for working almost anywhere in the world.

And climate, well.. for 9 months of the year, the climate is perfect, warm and not humid. For three months, July-September, it's hot and humid and that is also the peak of hurricane season. But I prefer 95F and an occasional hurricane over months of waist deep snow and below zero . Hacking ice of the windshield before freezing on my way to work is way too overrated!

  22. Re:Double Duh! on Why Mirroring Is Not a Backup Solution · · Score: 1

    No, it is not.
Replication is used to move data in a simple way between two running databases that needs access to SOME of the data.
Replication is extremely bad for backups, mostly because it is a very slow process and not meant to be used to duplicate the whole database. In such cases, you use a cluster system with multiple data points.
I work with one of the large database vendors and have for many years. Backup is not an issue, as we, at least, deliver some very good tools so you can manage backups and never miss more than a second or so of transactions, if any at all.

But when that is said, I have worked with so many companies where the DBA is running their system, resignation filled out and signed, the only thing missing, is the date as they are bound to fail and lose their data because of incompetence. No matter how many and how good the tools are, some DBA's are set on screwing up everything for some reason.

Every year passing by, with some form of natural disaster, the society is sinking deeper into the abyss because nobody feel it is a common interest and good for the country to pool money together and rebuild these areas. Today, years later, the areas still looks like the ruins of Europe did in 1945, the difference was that three years later, it looked nothing like it had just been through five years of war, USA's southern coast looks worse today.
