I recall many times that people here like to say how much more secure open source is. And then others on the other side bring up the theory that Windows has more exploits due to its marketshare. (In other words, why would someone spend time creating or finding an exploit that affects a small number of users?) It seems that this theory is proving to be true as Firefox continues to gain marketshare, it also continues to have security bugs. Note that is probably also because Firefox is getting more complex and with more complex software, you increase the likelihood of bugs.

Nintendo owns the handheld market. No questions about that. Sony has made the first dent, but the PSP as it is today is too expensive for most people. In anycase, did you actually look at Nintendo's financial results? http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/news/050126e.pdf The overwhelming majority of their sales and profits is from Gameboy, not Gamecube. I own a PS2, Gamecube, and XBox and by far I've bought more games on the PS2 and XBox and recently, more games on the Xbox. After awhile, I just got bored playing the next version of Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc... As for next gen systems, I'll probably get the PS3 and XBox2 and skip on Nintendo. Given their game selection, it doesn't appear that I'm their target audience anyways (30 years old).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_bombings_of_Hi roshima_and_Nagasaki Others contend that Japan had been trying to surrender for at least two months, but the US refused by insisting on an unconditional surrender--which they did not get even after the bombing, the bone of contention being retention of the Emperor.[13] (http://www.nuclearfiles.org/hitimeline/1945.html) In fact, while several diplomats favored surrender, the leaders of the Japanese military were committed to fighting a 'Decisive Battle' on Kyushu, hoping that they could negotiate better terms for an armistice afterward--all of which the Americans knew from reading decrypted Japanese communications. The Japanese government never did decide what terms, beyond preservation of an imperial system, they would have accepted to end the war; as late as August 9, the Supreme Council was still split, with the hardliners insisting Japan should demobilize its own forces, no war crimes trials, and no occupation. Only the direct intervention of the Emperor ended the dispute, and even after that a military coup was attempted to prevent the surrender (although it was easily suppressed).

  9. Re:You missed the point on No More BitKeeper Linux · · Score: 2, Insightful

Let me clarify the point I was trying to make. Someone had said that you cannot make money by producing free software. In the case where this is a hobby and you have a regular job, this is not an issue. In the case where you want to make this your career or make a business of producing free software, I argue that it is difficult if not impossible to produce both good software (meaning no money from support) and free software while making a living from it. You seem to be agreeing with my point.

As others have stated Microsoft removes Windows Media Player (probably the whole thing, not just the front end) and now media doesn't play and the EU complains? Most likely the RealNetworks demo was to simply remove the Windows Media Player front end while leaving the core files and codecs so that media still plays embedded in Word Docs. So the question is: what is the definition of removing Windows Media Player? Is it just the front end or is it the whole thing? Similarly, is removing IE just the front end, or all the supporting libraries?

First, I own all three games you mentioned and enjoyed all of them, but I didn't find them particularly innovative. Mario Sunshine wasn't much different from Mario64 except for the water gun. Metroid was a direct translation from 2D to 3D. With essentially the same gameplay elements if you ignore the fancy graphics. Even the annoying backtracking in levels. Zelda was an evolution of Zelda64. The puzzles reminded me of exactly the same puzzles on the Gameboy version. The sailing was a nice twist, but is it really that different from riding a horse? And fishing out treasure than digging for it? There have been some exceptions like Pikmin and Luigi's Mansion, but most of the stuff from the house of Mario were minor updates to existing franchises. How many Mario Party's do we need? For 1st party releases, I find the stuff coming from Sony the most interesting. Ico and Kri were excellent games.

  24. Nintendo is almost irrelavent except for portables on More On PS3 and Xbox 2 · · Score: 2, Interesting

Let's face it, except for the Super NES days, Nintendo is largely irrelavent. The Gamecube has not been a huge success outside of Japan (and even then, it's dominated by PS2). Nintendo is known for innovations, but not necessarily leading edge hardware. Nintendo's biggest problem is getting 3rd party support. They were so protective in the past (and also their younger audience stigma) that it's going to be hard for them to get 3rd parties to develop on the Nintendo. It seems like 90% of the games on the Gamecube are by Nintendo, and 80% of those games are sequels. I currently own all 3 systems, and I have the fewest games for the Gamecube. I would prefer if Nintendo became a developer for PS3 or XBox rather than try and introduce yet another machine as it's getting harder and harder to buy a console just for 3 games.
