    Hi,

    would be interested in what you pay for your connection?

    I'm paying about 40 EUR/month, (24/7 ADSL 768/128 Kbit) with unlimited traffic via German Telekom (T-DSL). Which is running very reliable.

    IMHO this isn't really cheap, but much cheaper then the metered ISDN access before.;)

    Cable isn't an option for most people here.

Cases are really cheap and I want a good one, I probably have to send CAD$200+ to get an aluminium one with good airflow and slots for HDD cooling fans. Server quality mobos aren't exactly cheap either."

    You don't need SCSI drives or a eepro/3com NIC in a desktop.
    Of course, I have all of them in this box, but I read /.;)

    Hi,

    I've been using farious Linux FS on multiple production servers, ext2/reiserfs, no problems at all. Today, I'm using ext3, quota support is better and you still can use chattr with ext3;)

    Anyway, you should run RAID1 or 5, if possible with a hw RAID controller, hotswapable disks and perform regular backups, if you are serious about your data.

    If anyone has some info, why ext3 is in most benchmarks faster then ext2, I would like to hear.

    Come on, grab ARCHIVES.gz from the first CD, use zgrep and rpm to install. Yast2 is the worst, I have ever seen/used. Using SuSE since their first distro (4.2).

    With a little work, even a digital camera can be told not to take pictures of the screen.

    I have a camera, that is over 70 years old, still working great. Highly doubt that it will be interested in anyones DRM crap. It just makes pictures, better quality then any digital camera can do today.

    I'm using Linux, because I believe in the way it works. None will be able to stop the success, no matter how hard he tries or how much zillions he puts in to stop it, spreading FUD.

    Sure? I'm using it right now to write this, while seti is running, burning a CD-RW, running DSL, squid and more, all at the same time, without any problems.

    Haven't used any M$ "OS" for years, not at home nor at my workplace. Linux can be desktop/server or both at once, just as you like it...;-) If it's to hard to figure out, well, your problem...

    Nope, there's no dependancy hell, you are just missing some libs, libgal.so.18 can be found using a search engine in a few seconds.

    The project HP even mentions that you neded somethings form (GnomeHide), whatever that is, I'm using KDE.

    Err, unpleasant? Mozilla is working really great, for an 1.0.0 version, printing is not a problem, just click File --> Print..., isn't really difficult, the file open/dialog work without any problems as cut/paste works. Are you sure you were using the browser you talked about. Years of trouble with those Netscrap Communicator now the first version of Mozilla makes IE look like a slow dog and you are whinning....
    Btw. Kudos to the Mozilla team for this great piece of sw...;-)



    2. Prompting for a filesystem scan

    Don't think you can blame Linux here, many things can happen after an unexpected shutdown. The real problem is this cheap crap Wintel PC hardware, mosts "Linux server" don't have the possibilty to redirect the BIOS/POST to the serial console, like real server have. Connected to a terminal server to enable logins, no matter at which point the boot fails/stops.

    5. Cleaner redraws.
    Don't get it, never had any problems with this?

    6. Die stray processes, die!

    KDE has something like this, which keeps care of runaways, took me a while to find how to disable this annoying feature.

    10. No easy way to configure X - especially change resolution on the fly.

    Works great for me, just press [CTRL][ALT][+|-], couldn't be easier...;-)

    After seeing this edonkey/kaaza crap, hitting my fw every other second from all over the world, thanks to iptables "limit", that I usually don't see much of it...;-)

    However, I would really like to know, what people are sharing all day long? Or is it just do put some stuff on their >100 GB discs and think they look real cool, while wasting bandwith?

    The flight data recorder of both machines could be recovered. The TCAS system, warned about a minute before the crash, "Traffic, Traffic" in both machines. About 15 sec. before it was all over, the TCAS in the Boeing 757 said "descent, descent" and in the Tupolew 154 "climb, climb", but the ground control told "decent, descent" to the russian pilot, which he, sadly did. Many international airlines have rules, that tell to follow the automatic system, no matter, what the ground control says! The russian don't have a rule like this, the pilot does, what he thinks is the right to do.

    Never used edonkey/kaaza (running Linux only) or how the latest warez sw, used today is called. My firewall gets lots of hits, were DPT makes it self-evident, that it's one of those progs.

    However, I don't get it, if you don't want to pay those heavy overprized CDs, just turn you radio on and don't buy any CD, it's pretty easy.

    Sure, a short shell script + cron would do the trick, but from the link, the sw seems to be pointed at M$ users...

    Funny reading this article, didn't anyone mention, that the virus really is the "OS", called M$ (put in what you like). The solution is pretty easy, install a real OS.

    Yes, I enjoy using /bin/sh within /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm. This makes a great file manager for KDE. It does have a "built-in" web browser, called lynx[..]

    /bin/sh is only a symlink to /bin/bash on Linux. Lynx is a seperate program, on most distros per default installed. Even 'less' shows .html today, sad if you really wanted to read the , you even need to press 'v' to switch to vi...;-)

    Isn't the real reason for running X + your favorite window-manager, you can have multiple xterms open at the same time....;-)

    In order to successfully run Linux you nead sendmail installed.

    Nope, any MTA, Ie. postfix/qmail/exim will just work fine, those apps are just looking for a MTA, if not only using some MUA like mail/mailx, they don't know anything about sendmail and there is no need.

    Not true, MS-Office runs with admin privileges, you can do things from within VB you couldn't as normal user. You try to t(s)ell that M$ systems would be near equal secure as Linux systems, ha,ha...

    Yeaah, I remember, must have been those C2 security systems, well network/CD-ROM/floppy had to be removed, to certify NT at this level, astonishing that you could use the keyboard at all...

    That looks very promising, connect to the box via serial on BIOS level, control BIOS settings from the runinng OS, this should turn a PC running Linux in a real server, no need for keyboard/graphic...:-)

    No need for something like http://www.realweasel.com/, which has some other limitations.

    Really? I thoughed that the oil pressure would be OK if this little red light (with the oil sign) would be out. This should be the case if the engine runs, if not, well you have a problem.
