Because it’s taking the space that is needed for OUR own food, the food for our animals, and the food for other animals. It just takes away too much space for what it delivers.
We should primarily pursue direct sunlight/energy-storage conversions. Electrochemical (batteries), or chemical (fuel), or in another way. But based on the sun. Because that resource is, at least for a looong time, virtually endless. We could use more solar panels than there is space on earth. Simply by putting them on satellites or dead planets.
Guys, this does not change anything! Any limit can, and was circumvented, by simply spreading the bribes (that’s the actual proper name) over a couple of sub-companies. The supreme court realized this, and rolled it back, because then, you can at least track the money back more easily. Makes sense.
Actually, in a fight, dolphins vs. sharks, the dolphins win. They are faster, can turn around quicker, and are much smarter. They ram their noses in the shark’s tummy. And apparently, sharks hate that so much, that they run away.
Ok, if the sharks can’t run away... and they begin to panic... then the dolphins are fucked.;)
Stuff looks really creepy because of the uncanny valley. I do not want to buy stuff that looks really creepy, when I do not expect it to be. (Exception: Horror games/movies.) I assume that this is true for nearly everybody. If people don’t buy it, there is no profit in it. If there is no profit in something, no company will produce it.
Wouldn’t it be better, to just shoot a huge parabolic mirror into space? Weighs less, easily replaced, and if properly focused (perhaps with a lightweight fresnel lens at the right position, it could e.g. heat a large bulb of water on earth, or something like that.
But, yes, I don’t know how much the athmosphere would filter them. But I also don’t know it the sun actually emits other types of waves too, that are strong enough to be used. Because it doesn’t have to be a mirror for light, does it?:)
...is the Firefox team to get over themselves, and integrate ffmpeg, for instant support of every format out there!
But I bet they will bitch and scream again, mentioning some “non-freeness” of H.264, despite nobody having cared about GIF support or anything, and ffmpeg being free and with H.264 support.
I hope Google tells them: Either you support it, or the money deal ends right now.
Well, in a properly designed system all private data is encrypted with that password, and only when you enter it, and it is cached in the current session, can that data be decrypted. Of course, how many properly designed systems are there out there. I heard in the US, not even banks do this properly. (Except maybe if you consider WoW a bank.;)
Protip: Data that is shown to everyone on Facebook, is never encrypted.;)
That’s why I chose “visual pattern” passwords. I draw symbols on the keyboard, e.g. while holding Mod3. (NEO layout. Hover the mouse above “Ebene 3”.) Like a N. Which results in “#\.../|{[” or “#u...1_a~e]4” (where... is one character […], that Slashdot does not accept.)
(This is an example. The real type of pattern I use is something different.;)
Looks like a basic architectural problem. Or else it would nor persist as long, trough so many changes.
No need to bash MS on top of the usual, because Win7 still has it. Think of a basic core library that just works since back then and does not need changing. You overlooked something, and someone found a way that you did no think about. That’s normal, an can happen to anyone.
It’s usually not the bugs that are the problem. Everything has bugs. It’s the way MS handles fixing them. With massive denial, attacking others for mentioning it, and then a very very late, half-assed patch that needs another patch to patch the patch. That’s the real problem.
Would MS just have a normal bugzilla, and in the normal case quickly fix the important bugs, I would have no problem with that. Mozilla does it just like that. And even Mozilla has a couple of long-standing bugs. I guess every big software has them. Because every software has a base architecture that you can only re-build every so many years in the complete rewrite. So bugs that don require that architecture to change can’t simply be fixed. Oh, that reminds me, that for IE, that rewrite is long overdue. That’s the reason there are so many big bugs in there. But I don’t see MS doing a complete rewrite, unless they are forced to completely throw away the old Trident engine.
How about doing it like Magnatune or Kongregate? Allow the uploader to choose a price range in which the viewer has to choose an amount. And/or if no range is chosen (=free) there is a tip jar for quick payments.
Done.
Of course these all still are business models that ignore basic physics (that information is no real object, and therefore can not be a good / product. Ever). But it’s better than nothing.
In the long run, one can only ask money for services. Like performing the song. Or like letting people sponsor a movie project (while in production) like a team of publishers/producers.
Really, what’s the point of turning the computer off when at home? That would mean no music, no movies, no quick search on wikipedia or something, no way of seeing if friends are at home. If you do not prefer to be alone and bored, but don’t want or can’t to drive to your friends, then the choice is obvious.
Doesn’t mean one also is alone and actually sits in front of the thing.
Uuum, Riddick — Return To Butcher’s Bay, ruled! It came out at the same time that Doom 3, Far Cry and Half-Life 2 came out. And it was the best of ’em all! It had, in my opinion, even the best graphics. But that was actually not so important, since the whole game was just all around well designed. It even had story twists that made the end non-obvious. The coolest thing was the level 5 prison. (A round, white room, without doors, where you wake up for two minutes, just to be put to sleep again. You will know it when you see it.)
They re-published it again, with a whole large part added at the end, and modern graphics. As “Assault On Dark Athena“ It’s still one of my favorite games.
It’s a simple problem: Sure, it’s great to have this extension system, like Firefox. But you have to offer presets! Ready-made bundled packages for specific target groups.
VI would be as easy to use a Notepad, given the right preset. But you would still get all the freedom. The same thing is true with the Miranda IM. Took me a whole week of work, to get it customized to what I want.
It’s GIT. There is no central top of the hierarchy. Pull whatever you like into your own repository, add whatever patches you like, modify it, and distribute as you please. I have over a dozen alternative kernel mods for Linux available in the Gentoo package manager. I chose the one that fits me best. Done.
And with what will you compile your own C compiler? Unless to compile it to machine code by hand, on paper, and then feed it to a computer that you have built yourself, the same stuff can still happen.
How about you stop eating? Most diseases come from bad food (wrong long-term balance, etc). How about you stop kissing and sex. You could get herpes. Oh, wait, we’re on Slashdot.;) You see how this makes no sense.
Think for a second, about, what human bodies are build for. You know what the number one advantage of humans was, back in the hunter/gatherer times? That we were able to “out-jog” and other life-form on the planet. We did just follow the animal, until it couldn’t walk any further. Nobody could walk as far as we did. Some native American tribes (in Mexico, I think) still are a testament to that. They walk hundrets of miles in one trip. In crappy shoes or barefoot. (After all, we’re built for it.) No problem. And they never get sick. They have some of the best healths on the planet.
You should really stop making excuses, and think about, what hundreds of thousands of years of evolution optimized you for. Can’t get any better.
The circulatory system got a heart to pump around the blood. But the lymphatic system, hasn’t got a heart. Instead, it relies on the movements of your muscles, to get the immune cells around the body.
Which makes it pretty clear, that not moving is not very healthy for you.
I also found, that there are two types of tiredness. The brain one, and the body one. Brain-wise I can be completely drained, while still having too much energy in my body, to be able to sleep well. Strangely, the opposite is not analogue. Instead, I found that my brain is much fitter in the morning, after being tired, body-wise, the evening before.
I all in all, making sport, made me come up with better ideas, being able to wrap my head around bigger things, etc. Because I slept better. What really hits it for me, is swimming. You get reeally chilly after it. And sleep like a baby. And in the summer, if nothing else, at least you see some hot girls in bikinis.;)
We geeks have a hard time with sports. But I got a little mind-twist for you: How about you see your body as this extremely advanced machine that it is. And you want to tune it, hack it, and keep it running nicely, just like do with your (really much much more primitive computer). Use the same motivation and ways to overcome your previous associations. Remember: You can change your views, whenever you like. Do it for the fun. You don’t have to. But there is this cool thing that you wanna try...;)
I should sell stickers, saying “My other computer... is my body!”.;)
Huh? Incentive for creative work was an argument for copyright?
No. It wasn’t. Look at the word. It says copyright. The right to copy. To reproduce the work. It has nothing to do with creativity or art. It has to do with publishers and money.
What you mean, is the author’s right. Which, from what I heard, is nearly meaningless in the USA. Right?
In Germany we have the Urheberrecht instead of the copyright. The Urheberrecht (literally “originator’s right”) is the right of the one who created the work. And it can’t be given away. Ever. (The rule is, that if you’re payed by the hour, the payer is the originator. If you’re payed all at once, you are.) Which is pretty nice.
Nowadays, nobody needs publishers anymore. So they are clinging to the last twig they still got: Extending copyright as far as possible. Like with this thing here. If your life would depend on it, you’d do the same. It always gets looong and weird at the end. But I don’t worry, since it’s impossible to keep this going forever. Sooner or later, there is no art and no artist left. New artists already couldn’t care less about them. And there will be a time, where their extensions will become just so silly, that everybody stops taking them seriously.
Maybe from your perspective, of a simple repetitive up-down motion, it does not look like sophisticated work. But if you ever have any real sex, good luck making her have an orgasm! (I assume you don’t want the woman to be replaced by a machine!;)

I assume that this is true for nearly everybody.
If people don’t buy it, there is no profit in it.
If there is no profit in something, no company will produce it.
There’s how it matters.
Simple as that.
Wouldn’t it be better, to just shoot a huge parabolic mirror into space? Weighs less, easily replaced, and if properly focused (perhaps with a lightweight fresnel lens at the right position, it could e.g. heat a large bulb of water on earth, or something like that.

And we’re already at 2.6.33. What’s the point?
You know what’s even better than that?
Seeing a whole city of people voluntarily letting themselves being chased by those beasts.
With human DNA of that quality, you could as well get any other type of ape out.
Sorry, 99% is not even close to enough. Try more like 99.99999%

A harem and skiing on cash can become boring more quickly than you think.
Seconded.
My personal favorite company that died that way: Bullfrog.

Or Defrag.
Nothing to optimize on something that is perfect.

Except that many people here start to think we are government by US laws. They always see the term “copyright“ and think that’s a German thing. Which results in silly things, like people stating to own the copyright on something they literally just copied. Like this idiot here, who really just scanned stuff in, and now thinks this entitles him to some right.
