If somebody can offer a service at a cheaper more efficient price, why not? All this humbug about salaries that one "deserves" to get is purely protectionist and doesn't benefit anybody. Offering cheaper overall inputs provide better value for all Americans to enjoy. If you're peddling global free trade, you've got to be willing to accept that labour needs to move freely and capitalism dictates that the person who can do it cheaper and offers an apple to apple comparison of quality will win. It's pure economics. If somebody can do something cheaper than you can, and is willing to do it, then there is nothing wrong with it.

  3. Support, support and more support on Is the Dell XPS One Better than the Apple iMac? · · Score: 1

The one reason I would choose a Dell over Apple anytime is the home support. If anything ever goes wrong with my dell computer, I run a 20 minute diagnostic test, speak to an agent over the phone for 20 minutes and the next day a technician is despatched to my house my the equivalent part. What's better, this warranty is valid for up to 3 years and Dell has never made a fuss. For USD 30 extra on purchase, I get nights and weekend support as well.

For people like my dad where things need to just work, Windows XP with a good firewall and antivirus program coupled with FireFox is sufficient. That and the convenient fact that if anything goes wrong, it'll get fixed by the next day. For that alone, Dell wins my vote.

I must add that I live in Malaysia and Apple here does not offer home service.

Their largest account comes with 2GB's of space, IMAP/POP, Spam Assasin, Sieve, 250MB of file space and tonnes more other things. All for only 40bucks a year. They have other plans, so you can pick and choose what you need.

I just bought a Dell Dimension 9150 that comes with the Dual Core processors. In Malaysia, they provide you with all the CDs. Everything down to the drivers comes with the pack that gets delivered. The OS provided is a clean OS. The "recovery" edition is kept on a partition on the HardDrive (takes about 3 gigs or so).

Funny how you guys don't seem to get the CDs in the States.

    • The occasional word processing
Now I've got it all nicely set up for him. The machine boots up and starts the ADSL connections. He gets his firefox complete with the bookmark toolbar customised to all his favourite websites AND open office to do his occasional work. Just 2 years ago he said he could never use a computer. And today at 65 he's running Mandrake Linux on an old 1ghz Athlon machine.

  16. UML Modelling - Communications Gap on UML Fever · · Score: 1
Check out a paper I wrote not too long ago with regards to UML Modelling and use of it in a Business Environment. Attached is its abstract.
This paper explores the communications gap that exists between business clients and developers using Unified Modelling Language(UML) modelling tools to gather software requirements. A methodology for measuring how client expectations form after studying UML models is developed. The methodology provides a formalized measure to show that information loss occurs during the interpretation process. We find that users place a high emphasis on interaction process with software rather than functionality and overall design process traditionally emphasized by developers. This contrasts with developers who feel that UML is the ultimate communication tool to hand down requirements to clients . We conclude that more work is required in the area of client developer communications using UML tools, and that the UML as a communication tool is not as effective as portrayed by the software industry.
