Given that it throws away all legacy ports, I'd say it's pretty short in USB ports. One ofr the keyboard. One for the mouse. One for the printer. So, that leaves you with exactly one USB port (I'm discounting the two USB 2.0 ones). When you throw away your old keyboard and mouse, keep around that old USB hub. You might need it. As for the three PCI slots: Video capture card, decent sound card, SCSI ports. There goes my scalability, I guess....
I played it last week in my nephew's Xbox, and frankly, it's a pretty standard shooter, like a nice-looking Doom without (official) multiplayer. Are there that many Xbox owners that have never played in a PC? Off the top of my head I could mention at least five better FPSs, some pretty old (let's see... Half-Life, Serious Sam, Soldier of Fortune, Undying, Max Payne). Even the N64 had Goldeneye, which is not much worse than Halo. So, really, what is it about Halo? Can anybody explain the game's charm?
You know, it's funny you should mention that. The reason for MS dominance is that, even if their 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 products are crap, they'll be extensively used because they're easy to pirate for free. So, by the time thet get to 4.0, they have a lock. But with Xbox, they actually have to get people to bay the crappy versions (can't pirate hardware). So, my prediction is, after two years and a lot of money Xbox will finally exit the market. MS won't acknowledge a failure, but will morph it into some other product (multimedia center?) which also won't work. Rinse and repeat until out of cash/clueful.
"Geeks like learning new things, and when they pop out at the end of the process they're entirely brainwashed,". Michael Howard, the Microsoft security expert who prepared the training material for the company's security retraining and led the security classes."
At least they acknowledge what their training tactics are. Just remember this if you ever consider working for Microsoft.
Nope. Phoenix is a bird that is reborn from its ashes every hundred or so years. The rest (most) of the time it's not fiery. Unless you ar thinking about G-Force;)
Don't be sorry... at any rate, they should be. And, as I said, I was just nitpicking (I do editing for a living, so I couldn't resist). Oh, great story, by the way:)
I've also wondered about, Hewlett and Packard. Those 'puter companies sure pick wacky words as names, right?;) Not trolling, but you chose a bad example. You could have used Compaq for good effect.
cringed when he saw this... "The newly created American Open Technology Consortium has posted a draft of their position statement online. They propose to change that by forming a real lobbying..."
So, they posted a draft of their position statement, and immediatly proposed to change that? Or what? -end nitpick-
Easy. They don't run on Windows. And this is NOT a troll. Consoles do need less memory to run games because of the more efficient OS. Check out the minimum PC specs on GTA2, and then consider that GTA3 runs on a PS2.
-eBay stock raises 10 points. -After accepting that.tv domains won't sell, the island of Tuvali announces plans to produce and export Everquest high-level characters. -Microsoft denounces Sony's plot to monopolize the online gaming world, giving the PS2 an unfair advantage over Xbox. -A woman, who blames Everquest for her son's suicide, calls for action against what she calls "an incoming genocide". -Thousands of Slashdot readers comment. "It's so cool", says some. "So, who cares?", says others. But the predominant opinion is "Microsoft still sucks".
Go here. May I note that this movie gets a 77% aproval from critics around the Net, which is unusually high. Then again, that's from profesional reviewers, not wanna-be geeks who think they know about everything because they get to write in Slashdot.
I'd love to finally move to OS/2 but I need my Windows apps. This might be the solution... except 239 euros+tax seems a little steep for a home user... Also, has anyone got any idea what will happen when Windows crashes (as it is liable to do) while running on top of this?
After reading those lyrics, I'm compelled to kill myself. Expect to hear from my family's lawyers promptly. Sorry, dude. You really should have put a warning label.
Tom's Hardware has an excellent comparison of 14 LCD monitors, in case you are thinking about getting one. The first part is also a really good guide to wheter you want an LCD or a CRT, plus a simple explanation of what to look for. Outstanding piece. First part is here The second part can be found here
Trying to protect children from pornography on the net is futile, for two reasons. First, it's stupid to target the net when you can get more/better porno in cable. Even mainstream channels like Cinemax are now offering softcore, and nobody is talking about banning it. And, yes, I'm pretty sure more kids have access to cable TV than to internet. Two, there isn't that much porn out there. Yes, there are plenty of teasers, but it's REALLY hard these days to get to actual porn wothout paying for it. Porn sites are businesses, and kids don't get in without paying (and paying is pretty hard for a kid). So, I say all these people need to chill out a bit. Try to be a good parent, and get used to the idea that your kid WILL actually see some porn, somewhere, somehow. I did. You probably did too. Did it cause us any harm? Of course not. "We were so busy trying to give our children all the things we never had, we forgot to give them all the things we did have".- Someone, I don't remember who. But he was right.
Well, I'd say passing a law like that now would make about as much sense as passing a law that prohibits the use of nuclear weapons in interstellar wars. Laws have to adjust to the times and be practical. OTOH, if a goverment is decided to develop killer robots, a 150 year old law is not going to stop them. I bet you'd see it repealed faster than it took to pass the DMCA....
I believe that using the words "artificial intelligence" to denote your oponents in most videogames is a bad choice. A Counterstrike bot has a very limited number of choices in a controlled environmente. Same goes for your Warcraft oponent. Inteligence, on the other hand, is about the ability to improvise under unexpected circumstances. In other words, even if they're both usually called "artifitial intelligence", they're two altogether different things.
And you missed HIS point, that is that robots sophisticate enough to carry out those laws do not exist and will not exist for a long, long time. Which means, in effect, that those laws are not necesary for the foreseeable future...

So, do they thing the discs are the cat's enema? What would that make the controllers? ;)
Inquiring minds...

I bet JonKatz would fall for it
Man, oh, man, how I wish for a "+1 Troll" option right now. :)
Really, some trolls are worth modding up. This is one of them
