  1. Not so many ports... on Abit's New Motherboard Lays On The Ports · · Score: 1

Given that it throws away all legacy ports, I'd say it's pretty short in USB ports.
One ofr the keyboard. One for the mouse. One for the printer.
So, that leaves you with exactly one USB port (I'm discounting the two USB 2.0 ones).
When you throw away your old keyboard and mouse, keep around that old USB hub. You might need it.
As for the three PCI slots: Video capture card, decent sound card, SCSI ports. There goes my scalability, I guess....

  2. What's with Halo? on PS2 Vs. X-Box: Winner Emerging? · · Score: 1

I played it last week in my nephew's Xbox, and frankly, it's a pretty standard shooter, like a nice-looking Doom without (official) multiplayer.
Are there that many Xbox owners that have never played in a PC? Off the top of my head I could mention at least five better FPSs, some pretty old (let's see... Half-Life, Serious Sam, Soldier of Fortune, Undying, Max Payne). Even the N64 had Goldeneye, which is not much worse than Halo.
So, really, what is it about Halo? Can anybody explain the game's charm?

You know, it's funny you should mention that.
The reason for MS dominance is that, even if their 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 products are crap, they'll be extensively used because they're easy to pirate for free. So, by the time thet get to 4.0, they have a lock.
But with Xbox, they actually have to get people to bay the crappy versions (can't pirate hardware). So, my prediction is, after two years and a lot of money Xbox will finally exit the market. MS won't acknowledge a failure, but will morph it into some other product (multimedia center?) which also won't work. Rinse and repeat until out of cash/clueful.

  20. A fool's errand on CIPA Trial Comes to a Close · · Score: 3, Interesting

Trying to protect children from pornography on the net is futile, for two reasons.
First, it's stupid to target the net when you can get more/better porno in cable. Even mainstream channels like Cinemax are now offering softcore, and nobody is talking about banning it. And, yes, I'm pretty sure more kids have access to cable TV than to internet.
Two, there isn't that much porn out there. Yes, there are plenty of teasers, but it's REALLY hard these days to get to actual porn wothout paying for it. Porn sites are businesses, and kids don't get in without paying (and paying is pretty hard for a kid).
So, I say all these people need to chill out a bit. Try to be a good parent, and get used to the idea that your kid WILL actually see some porn, somewhere, somehow. I did. You probably did too. Did it cause us any harm? Of course not.
"We were so busy trying to give our children all the things we never had, we forgot to give them all the things we did have".- Someone, I don't remember who. But he was right.
