Well, if you used Windows, or OS-X, then you would have problems...I had no problem under Linux. I ripped it to add to all the other Sarah CDs I ripped, her whole catalog, which I own, plus some broadcasts I recored off CFNY way back when. Now I can listen to her whole catalog on a couple of CDs in my vehicle, which has a CD player that does mp3s.
As long as the standard requires rpm files, its going to be a non-starter for many. The rpm format sucks the big one. I would much rather almost anything else than be stuck in RPM HELL. Give me slackpacks, apt-get, or even tarballs...but please save us from RPM Hell!
I agree...but the other part of the equation is that there are all these graying Yuppies who are willing to spend megabucks to see geriactric "Golden Oldies"...oh, sorry, they call them "Classic Rock" nowadays.
As far as I'm concerned, Berman and Braga *killed* Star Trek. A friend of mine is not a media fan who attended some fuction where one of the two defilers of Trek was told me the story about how important they think they are, and were suprised that she didn't want his autograph. What a jerk.
Get Majel and his son back involved, as they have a clue as to what the Great Bird of the Galaxy had in mind.
Gods, you must be young...Kirk/Spock (aka "slash") fan fiction has been around since the '70s. A couple of good friends of mine used to help run one of the Slash Fanzines. I think it is funny that today there is all this talk about how popular lesbians having sex is as a male fantasy...but the fact virtually all Slash fiction was written by women back then...and may still be today for all I know (*not* my genre of Trek fanfic) it seems to go both ways.
When was the last time Microsoft innovated? Windows? Nope, they copied that from Apple and Xerox. Word/Excel? Nope. DOS? Bought that from another company. I would think you have to go all the way back to Microsoft BASIC to see the last unique product that they created.
How about Apple? Apple I, Apple II, LISA, Mac, iMac, iPOD...
Realisticly, when you buy RHEL, you are not paying a license fee, but a support fee. It get's you Red Hat engineers on your side to fix your problems, well, worth the price of admission if your company depends on a RHEL installation.
A good DJ exchanges energy with the dancers...and learns how to keep that energy flowing with what they are playing. All the software or hardware in the world will not make you a good DJ, it takes practice, lots. And like other musicians, you have to learn your instruments, your hardware and software, so well you don't need to think about it to use it.
So offer to DJ at parties, throw parties to DJ at, go to places where people DJ, and learn!
And never stop learning!

Of course, don't forget that Prez Bush & Co are fundies, and are expecting the End Times any day now...why preserve ANWR, or oil, or the Rain Forests, etc...
But isn't Snort Open Source? Doesn't that mean that the "technology" is already *out* there?
Could this just be another bogus attempt by the Bush's krewe to "spin" things, and make it look like they actually care about the US surviving another 200 years, as opposed to preparing for "The Rapture" that Fundamentalist Christians have been saying is 'comming soon', for the past 1,000 years?
I was more suprised by the fact that it wasn't an announcement that they SCO was merging with the RIAA, as their business models seem to similar...Who needs pyramids when you can just sue people to make money!
This has been my contention since the whole fiasco about the Root DNS servers...They are there only because of a consensus...if we change our consensus, the existing servers will become unneeded. The US Government can't control the Inetnet, as it is a consensus meritocracy, much as the Tofflers described in their wonderful series of books on the future of power.
With a totally decentralized Internet, all it takes is one tunnel to bypass existing censorship. I remember back in the Fidonet days, you could get a feed to their equivelent of newsgroups either via the backbone, or via a private feed. That can, and probably does happen today on the Internet.
Let the Governments of this Planet have the illusion that they control the internet...us techies know they only do so at our sufferenace.
Actually, from what little I understand of the RIM system, it seems no different from the way that SMTP, or Simple Mail Transportation Protocol works. If I send an email to x@domain.com, it first of all goes to my local SMTP server, which then tries to connect to the mail server defined in the MX (Mail eXchanger) record for domain.com. If, for some reason, it can't get through, it stores the message, and keeps on trying (for a mail admin defined number of times) until it reaches the mail system on domain.com.
You can also have, for example, a third party "buffer" you email, that is, set you MX record to isp.com, who will recieve mail for domain.com, and then send it on to domain.com when it is available. This seems to be basically what RIM is doing is acting as a buffer, or routing host for email to RIM service subscribers. I don't see how you could patent this, because it is the basis of the entire SMTP/Internet Mail system.
Ignore him, and exercise your freewill, and roll the bones!!
