  6. Celtic Druids were masters of memory on The Memory Masters · · Score: 3, Interesting

One of the specialties of Druids was the Brehons, the judges and law-speakers of Celtic society. They would memorize the entire Canon of Celtic Laws, plus all the precidents that had been decided since the codification of said Laws. Much as the Brits would like us to believe that they invented precident based law and circuit judges, The Celts had such a system in operation over 4,000 years ago. The fact that the British occupied Ireland and tried to destroy Celtic Irish culture is the reason why we don't commonly know the truth of the matter, as the winners tend to write the history books. But some information still exists that allows us to reconize the contribution of the Celtis to both memory, and law.

Similarly, the Bardic class of Druids memorized their entire songlist, both music and lyrics.

In fact, because of this memory skill of the Druids, we know little of their rituals and depth of knowledge remain since they memorized it all. And as they were gradually hunted down and killed by the British, Romans and later Christianity, the extent of their knowledge has mostly been lost. We only know what others say about them, for the most part, and one thing that they all agree is that nothing was written down and all was memorized.

When he gets sick from not viewing the world through his video camera, he is suffering a form the same thing people who spend a lot of time in Virtual Reality do...their brains adapt to the slight lag caused by the electronics, and I theorize that they do so quickly because video is a much "hotter" medium...that is, it is like a firehose for the real visual field that the eye is used to. When that lag is eliminated, by taking the display off, it takes a while to adapt back to the visually cooler natural environment...and until it adapts, your inner ear and your visual perceptions are out of sync, and that can cause nausia. ...based upon observations from being the techie at a Virtual Reality Gameing place for 6 months.

  25. Re:A Victory for People and Roland! on Roland Backs Down On MT-32 Emulator · · Score: 2, Interesting

Roland (and their offspring, Boss) have always made excellent instruments. I have an SH-3 (not even an "a") that has been through the wringer and then some, but all it needs right now is a cleaning...it still sounds as sweet as the day I traded a copy of the Principia Discordia for it in the 1980s. I've had many a piece of Roland equipment over the years, and have always been happy about their quality and sounds...their Boss stomp pedals practally owned the market for many years...and with on exception, all of the Roland/Boss stuff I own still works, even if some of it is 20+ years old.

Roland giving up on the whole copyright issue, saying that can't find their proof of copyright may just be them saving face. They have have decided that the amount of bad publicity the whole fiasco would generate would tarnish their good name, and I wouldn't blame them for deciding so. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, and say they are just being good financial citizens realizing they wouldn't profit from going after the emulator people, and it may just have been an over-zelous lawyer's department that got overruled by the higher-ups.

That being said, I guess I have faith in Roland, they have always dealt fairly with me the few times I've had to deal with them, and I only hope that is happening now with this MT-32 emulator business. Think about the musical instruments that have been emulated, the Prophet 5, the Minimoog, etc. and think of the prestige that has given these companies that made the copied instruments...the only difference is that Roland is till around (although Mr. Moog has reconstituted his company, Big Briar rocks!)...having a emulator come out of an old instrument from a company give them a prestige like few things can!
