He discussion of a "Community Watch" system, but with a pervasive internet cams and either cheap labour or trade offs (I'll watch your's if you watch mine).
Back in the mid 90's, I wrote a number of programs using IBM's OS/2, ActionMedia2 cards and a langauge called AudioVisualConnection, or AVC. With it, I wrote Touch Ottawa/Hull, an interactive tourist infromation application running on Kiosks around Ottawa..in Hotels, Bus station, etc. All the data - graphics, audio and video was served off a central server (running BSDI) and cached on the kiosks. I also wrote a stand-alone system for use at Trade shows...it was called The Interactive Business Show, and was used at CeBIT, Comdex and the Montreal International Film Festival. I wonder when MS went for their patent...maybe I should apply for a retro-active patent?
I've run SMP systems, and I really do prefer them for my workstation. Lots of performance and stablity, and if I do something a little creazy, like compile a 2.5 kernel, it doesn't take forever! Plus, it has that Cyberpunk/Geek factor. The same reason that rackmount phones. Add to that, Dual CPU machines, like Sun SparcStations 10/20s, and Pentium I's and Pro are really cheap and fun to play with.
O.K., I admit, I'm a Geek...but who here isn't?!?!?!
BTW, the blooddy site is slashdotted, at 7 am! Wow.
True, many people can deal with smokey clubs. I can't. Unless I take massive amounts of antihistamines, my tonsuls swell up, and make it very hard to breath or swallow. This is a medical allergy, not a lifestyle statement.
Most of us Slackware Users already can do this, in our sleep...if you haven't compiled a Kernel a couple of hundred times, you probably aren'ta Slackware user!
Just this past week, I compiled kernels for use on IBM X series e-server SMP systems and ServeRaid (ips) or MTP Fusion Chipsets...plus sound card support...A little tricky, and but no biggie.
How come more of our parents aren't one-eyed, or have serious damage to the back of their heads? I mean, look at all of the Laurel and Hardy movies, or the Three Stooges...they are filled with many sceens of people poking others eyes out, impacts upon their head usually in the back since they are looking the wrong way...and falls, impact with doors/windows/chairs/etc. headfirst...So, let's see a study of the injuries of our Parents and Grandparents in relation to the L&H, and Three Stooges...And I bet it will show that their was very little effect, except for those who already had sociopathic tendancies (a small percentage of today's society).
Some of my best programming was done with all the lights out, sometime after 11 pm with Ministry blasting out of a very good sound system. It was just me, the music and the code.
Similarly, I am working on creating a new Distro at the moment, but work in a small cubicle hell, and I find it very hard to do stuff since there is constant interuptions...and a number of other demands on my time that interupt me. sigh.
Tax Software like that, and you will trigger a deep recession. Software shoud compete on it's merits, not on marketing, and it shouldn't matter where it comes from...common, does this person really think that us North Americans (Canadians and USAians) couldn't compete against anywhere else without artificial barriers? Good software will eventually rise to the top especially as Open Source becomes the major paradign for software creation.
They theorize that it was placed on the list because of the conflict between Germany and the USA...and it kind a makes sense...a stupid type of sense, true, but sense none the less.
I guess my fate was sealed when as a kid, I cried when they shut down HAL in 2001...
I really wanted to study Computer Psychology, I wanted to be Dr. Chandra from 2001/2010/etc. Now I do SysAdmin and Security for Linux...yes, it's a letdown, but it still is fun!
But with Slackware, I agree it is a major upgrade since the switched to GCC 3.2.2...but I admit, it is not as major as going from COFF to ELF format...but this does deserve a major number change.
Part of the problem in counting the number of Linux desktops/servers/etc. is that anyone can get it from any of a million different places (friends, ftp, subscriptions, etc.), but the industry tends only to count sales. I know for a fact that every CD I have of Linux I have installed it on at least 10 other systems...some are upgrades, others are new users, and still others moving over from another distro.
And this leads to the other problem...what are the *real* usage stats on distros? It's hard to tell. From talking to people, a lot of people use Slackware and Debian for servers, Red Hat, Suse and Mandrake for desktops...but how can we really count who is using what?
Definitely Deja-vu!
But..if it is only encryption, not compression, then I am not worried.

And legally, is there a difference between them? I mean, if it is a list of standard includes for example...

Having met the Fruvous people, I think they would give permission, since it is both Topical, and Canadian.
And if you like Moxy Fruvous, you will probably like The Arrogant Worms, and Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie.

Probably because, like myself, I am very allergic to tobacco smoke, and if there is enough of it, actually stop breathing. Not good for one's health.

It's simple to use, no RPM Hell, and if something is broke, you are only a ./configure ; make ; make install away from a fix!
