  1. Re:Hardware HAS gone to hell on Palm m100s - A Pattern of Defects? · · Score: 1, Interesting

I have a Cannon BJC-240 printer that I bought back in 1996, for a whopping $200 dollars. This, by today's standards, is enough to purchase a VERY good photo printer, but at that time, it was quite good, despite the fact that it had less than 300 DPI maximum. I used it heavily, and although I don't use it anymore, it still works perfectly today.

I bought a Lexmark Z31 printer for $20 dollars last year, and it turned out to print fine for the first month, and the text was printed so well that most people couden't tell it from a sheet printed on a laser printer. However, its condition rapidly degraded. It just started turning on and off for no reason, and it did this constantly. And the ink cartridge indicator has also gone super inaccruate. It's unusuable now.

Two months after the purchase, I made the switchover to Linux, and I stopped using Windowz almost completely. The problem then was the Z31 is a dumb printer. It must recieve all instruction from the host computer, and it dosen't even have it's own buit in fontset! Much less support PCL or PS. Since there was no Linux driver, I had to buy a more expensive Epson Stylus C60 printer, which seems to work fine still.

In conclusion, you get what you pay for. Today, hardware may be getting cheaper and cheaper, yet the quality of this cheap stuff has plummetted.

This system that UnitedLinux is proposing is mainly about binaries. They will release the souce and give it out free of charge, however, it is the precomiled binaries that are going to cost money to buy in a package. This has always been a sketchy area in the fight for free software.

TransGaming and WineX, for example, is based on LGPL code (Wine), and therefore must release a free version, and its source. So, they release only their souce, and they make the binaries, which are neatly packaged, only to their subscribers. I really don't know that much about the GPL, and I haven't read through it all, and I must say that yes, doing this is untraditional and wrong.

Moreover, The term UnitedLinux is a term that they prohibit users who compile from source to call their OS, as the article written by RMS stated. Linux is a trademarked expression, owned by Torvalds himself! I don't understand how they can legally do this!

  3. Is this realiable? on Tracking Mafiaboy · · Score: 0

I guess this only proves that Mafiaboy was a kid, and a newbie even further. For one, he is using DOS, an OS that I regard as useless and unusable, compared to BASH, or TCSH, or even the Bourne SHell in UNIX. Secondly, I doubt that hacking software has a feature to detect traces, as it would be very hard (impossible?) Thirdly, this hacking program is extremely simple, and does not look like what the article was describing. He used a DDoS attack, where many machines were used in a single operation, and the term 'hack' is used incorrectly. DoS is NOT a hack, it is a simple attack (known as phreaking, I think) that anyone, and I mean ANYONE with either good tools, or a good connection, can do.

It must be said that some GPLed software is also 'commercial' Let's take a look at Linux distros, for example, they are commercially avaliable, but almost 99% of their content is GPLed software. In this case, the judge's ruling does not cover this area in which the software is both commercially and freely distrbiuted. I think what the judge intended is for the kid to not get anymore hacking tools, as, to my knowledge, there aren't any that are widely avaliable commercially.

This is simply a disgrace to a complete community of programmers and hackers alike. It is suprising that a kid did all this to well known websites, but I instantly knew that he WAS a script kiddie, and nothing more, when I read the part where he was 'boasting about his hacking abilities.' No good hacker EVER does that, unless he WANTS to get caught and messed with. DoS attacks are rather stupid and meritless. Anyone can do it with the proper scripts and code. What angers me the most is that he thinks that he is a 1337 |-|4X0R when he is SO OBVIOUSLY NOT.

Overall, I think that the series was great, and it had great potential. As a person with much interest in technology, the three were quite a role model to me, with their publication that wasn't too successful and their "insane" inquiries into stuff that nobody ever talks about. I espically enjoyed the first episode, about domestic terrorism, and they PREVENTED a plane from crashing into the WTC (COINCEDENCE????). The X files, to me, is a great series, and so is Dark Angel, but FOX does a TERRIABLE job at doing the commercials. They make them seem like shows packed with action, and no actual content, while the shows actually do have a lot more content. In the commercial I saw today for the X files, they announced that at least one of them will die, and it was pretty obvious who would die, as with 5 episodes left, they surely couden't kill Scully off.

As for gameplay, I haven't really expierenced any problems with the screen not getting updated enough, as many have said was a problem due to the LCD's natural slow-response nature. I have had the red die out out of 2 monitors now. I had to take apart one (don't do this without proper insulation and possibly gloves, these things, even while off, can give off a nasty shock) and fiddle with the electron gun in order to reactivate the red. On the other one, it turned out to have a bent pin in the connector, which prevented it from going into the socket where it's supposed to go.

They really made me hate to go outside, and really, I think that that is the best way to make kids not to get into trouble. I can agree with your statement on your childhood - a good parent never would need a device as ludicrous as this. I never wore a bike helmet either, and I was watching rated 'R' movies when I was, like, 4 years old, and my parents actually had no idea what were these 'ratings' for movies. They considered them absurd. I turned out to be a good kid, and I did very well at school.

I have heard some instances of people who became violently ill suddenly, after they had gone vegetarian for several decades, because of a defecit of B12 over the years. Most vegetarians don't have this problem, but many of them take suppliments just in case. Although this isn't exactly relavent to this article, I AGREE COMPLETELY! By far, all M$ products are simply overrated, overcharged, and just plain terriable. They allow for no degree of freedom at all, and unlike *NIX where I can configure virtually every element of the OS to the way I like it, Windowz dosen't even let me see the underlying processes for crying out loud! The only thing that I think Windowz is good for is gaming. Just gaming. In office work, business work, etc. You need stablity, and if you don't have the competence to use a UNIX related platform, then use a mac. They're stable. Playing games is the time when stablitity matters minimally. Plus, I don't see why game developers even develop games for Windows. Although I agree that DirectX and it's components are great API features, I think that they're overlooking the merit at using Linux (Yeah, they could use Solaris, HP-UX, etc, but I'm just using Linux in this example) to develop games. Linux is extremely modular, an extremely well written OS. With XFree86 version 4, many more APIs are implimented that help developers. Finally, I would like to say that I enjoy using multiple sound cards(one for speakers, one for headphones), and two video cards to control 2 monitors. These are built in features to X11R6 version 4.x.x, people. And I think that this is extremely useful. I haven't seen a single person who found out how to do it on Windows(not one of those 2 port video cards, I'm talking about using 2 seperate video cards powering 2 monitors, Correct me if I'm wrong)

Yes, I agree that Blender was some great software, and its interface was probably the most usable of any 3D modeling suite I've ever seen complete with radiosity, complex animation rendering, etc. All that, plus a gaming engine, all packed into a file less than 3 megs large. It's simply amazing how a small, and very usable program could pack all those features into a tiny little package, unlike 3DSMAX, which, in essence, has about the same functionality, but costs infinately more (divide by zero :-) ) and occupies 100x more disk space. If you're looking for an alternative, I would recommend Moonlight Atelier, which is also dead in production since the producers went to make more profitable products like Swift3D(since Moonlight was GPL'd, there is a movement underway to develop it, but I don't know how it's doing now). However, if you're really into Blender, and are using Linux, then I would recommend that you would stick to Blender. I know there are not going to be any more updates (anytime soon), but who said it wasn't a perfectly usable piece of software as is? I'm sad to see it go, and this may be the fate of Mandrakesoft as well (I hope not). But I'm very suprised at how Blender came from a tiny, unknown 3D suite, and almost overnight, became more known in the computer graphics industry, and finally, with almost no warning, failed all of the sudden. It's things like this I just can't explain.

While the users of Maciontosh, Linux, BSD, almost any other operating system has expierenced a major improvement in filesystems, for example, for Linux from EXT2 to EXT3, XFS, ReiserFS, and many other virtually "unbreakable" filesystems, and Maciontosh systems have gone from their classic FAT like filesystem to their new Extended Hierarchial Filesystem. The only thing that Mirosoft has come up with is their NTFS, which really is a huge misnomer since it is not "new technology," it's just an update to a very old technology - FAT, and when I used Windows NT computers with the NTFS, I didn't notice a major improvement in speed, nor was it any more "fixable" than using regular old FAT. When I switched to Linux about a half year ago, EXT3 and Reiser were already avaliable. I tried them and I thought they were excellent because I never actually have to run fsck, they're faster, and much harder to corrupt. I hope that the new OFS from Microsoft is as good as Reiser, but seeing from the description, I really don't think they're aiming for the same thing. Even if they do make a better filesystem (I really doubt it) I'm never going to go back to Windows as my primary operating system.

I don't think they went overboard with Microsoft, yet. I agree that I took a huge risk by purchasing a Soyo motherboard from Frys, but it works fine for me under Linux, and I can use multiple sound cards and video cards under the same IRQ, I guess I got lucky or something to not get a WinXP "certified" board, which is really just making sure a better future, for Microsoft. Really, I don't see the point of Microsoft demanding ACPI be turned permantly off, unless they have something to hide.
