  1. Not just restricted to File-Sharing networks on Anti-piracy Vigilantes Tracking P2P Users · · Score: 2, Interesting
So, what if I open up both my Wireless Access Point and my ADSL Router to the world, and drop a file on my shared box that's "incorrectly" named??

Let's say I drop on a copy of BackOrifice, and "accidently" rename it to "Paris_Hilton_Video"..

Am I now guilty of some form of digital luring or *entrapment*?

  2. The end of the Slashdot Effect? on DARPA Aims to Redo the Internet Protocol · · Score: 1
With a more secure, more robust internet, does this include built-in padding to prevent the "Slashdot Effect"? For some of us, linking to some poor sod's cable server is the only way we can (legitimately) DDoS a website! Damn you, DARPA!

  5. Does anyone know the law on this?? on BudNet Tracks Your Suds · · Score: 1

Does anyone know the law (preferably Canadian law)regarding this? Can Safeway (or Save-on-Foods, or IGA) legally withhold the 'discount' from me, just because I don't produce a card? Anyone can shop in these RETAIL, NON-membership stores without a card, so, although IANAL, I would think that I would be entitled to any discount, just as much as the next guy... card-carrying communis..errr.. card-carrying member, or not.

These are definitely Alpha geeks, who've NEVER gone swimming on a cold day ;)

  8. The same reason for SARS Virus patent? on Analyzing AT&T's Anti-Anti-Spam Patent · · Score: 1
Recently (May 2003), the British Columbia (Canada) Cancer Agency "filed a provisional application for a U.S. patent for what could be the genetic code for the SARS virus...".

They go on to say they want to patent it "...to ensure the information remains public and is not hoarded by someone seeking to profit from it."

    Full story here:

So.. AT&T's possible motive is to prevent a spammer from patenting this technology... and then NOT use it.... or, conversely, sell it for ransom.

Holding such a patent would certainly be a marketable selling point for AT&T's ISP/email services, no?

  13. Shipping & Taxes a LAME EXCUSES! on Restrictive Sales Practices on the Web? · · Score: 1
If I were going to ship a product worldwide, I'd state ( CLEARLY, on my 'policies' page ) that all Taxes, Duties and other tarriffs are the responsibility of the purchaser - International orders are NON-Returnable and NON-Refundable.

In other words, if I order a $15 Tee-Shirt from ABC Company, and it arrives at the border, and I get a notice that I owe some conglomerate brokerage firm an additional 20 bux for taxes & brokerage fees, and I refuse the shipment (and the fee), whether or not the product gets returned to ABC Company, they still get to keep their $15 !!!

Not a bad deal at all for ABC Company, especially if they get the product back, ready for resale!

As for international shipping, don't the major shipping companies have readily-available online shipping calculators? I'm sure they do.
