ZDNet's Paul Murphy has set out his IT predictions for 2007. Featured among the completely predictable, OpenSolaris overtaking Linux is apparently inevitable within one year.
I actually don't work for the group in charge of maintaining the systems, but I know a few things about how they are maintained. Basically, all systems have the same exact same RH4 image and sync up against an internal yum repository for software updates. There is basically zero maintenance for each machine besides that. Users can't write to the hard drive, all data is stored on netapp filers. When you are hired, you get really basic classes on how to use KDE, the internal wiki, Open Office, get on mailing lists, etc. A caveman could pass these classes.
We have over 7000 linux machines and 4 people to maintain them, plus 1000+ technical and non technical employees. Using Linux saves us millions of dollars, which pays for a couple of those netapps. The thing is, Linux just works, not to mention the vast amount of free software that is available for it.
Truthfully, and its a sad truth for some people, anyone who says Linux isn't ready for the corporate world has no idea what they are talking about. Its been there for while.
Your post is, ironic to say the least. You totally confirmed what I was saying and at the same time, shown yourself to be a total fucking retard! Thats just great. You read that single verse, and what you came away with is a literal interpretation of it, vs reading the entire story and coming away with actual lesson God intended. I'll give you a hint, your interpretion is so wrong, its not even close.
I suggest, you take a real old testament class, or you go back and read each story as a whole.
"The teacher of the science class had apparently even taken the step of stating at the start of the school year that there were other theories on the origin of life."
No, there is only one theory about the origins of life. The theory is called the theory of evolution. Creation is based on old testament fables passed down from generation to generation by the tribes of Israel and put to text by scribes. The stories are supposed to teach deep lessons to the unwashed masses about what it means to be a person, not offer a theory on the creation of life. To come away from the book of genesis with the idea that God created the earth in 7 days means you completely missed the lessons the author was trying to teach. This is the reason why I think Christians are way off track, they have a totally wrong interpretation of Jewish texts. Maybe they should ask a Rabbi for help.
Would it be possible to sue the patent office for damages over bad patents? I mean, negligence, politics, etc all play a roll in the approval process. I suspect that a company sued of out existance over a questionable patent, should be able to sue the patent office. I bet that, would stop bad patents.
One example of how this has cropped up in the past is that students might fairly make xeroxes from reference books for their classes, but copy shops that do it for the students get sued and lose. I've been noticing the first indications that this principle might be on the wane, but it'll be a while yet. In the meantime, those who would want to stand in another's shoes are going to need to make a fair use argument that works with regard to them, rather than borrowing someone else's.
Not a good example. The copy shop is not giving the student the original book, but keeping it make more copies. In this case, the customer gets their original copy, and an IPod pre-loaded with a copy of media they just purchased. Basically, they are just saving the consumer time, doing something they could easily do themsevles.
I boot to Windows to play because my first account was banned for no reason when I was using Winex. Luckily, it was banned before I even reached level 10, although it pissed me off I just started another account. Noone ever responsed to my emails or anything.
Sony, in all its might and glorious power, should have had people knecapping people who they felt were waiting in line for others. I would have loved to see the article if Sony delayed the launch because "People are asking other people to stand in line for them".
Uhhg, what fucking bullshit

I can't even think of a instance where Windows would be "the right tool for the right job".

Debian has quietly lost all its users to Gentoo and Ubuntu.
What do these tests entail?
I think this was true 5 or 6 years ago, the same can't be said now.
In heavy traffic, if you constantly change lanes, tailgate anyone in front of you, shake your fist in fury, you will get most places a lot faster.
What does sed has to do with EA?
There is a crap war in Iraq, Putin is assasinating people, but some dudes distributing mp3s is what our government is worried about.
Memorable quote which kinda sums up the MS Novell deal.
Robert's Father: Longshanks acquired Wallace. So did our nobles. That was the price of your crown.

Kids have to worry about enough these days without getting beat up at school because they don't have the latest console.
Is that he settled out of court for sexual harrasment charges. "You want a piece of the factor?"
Isn't that convinient. Maybe we would have found this out years ago if someone would have funded stem cell research.
Zonk is really branching out, posting somewhat negative articles about Nintendo. Games.slashdot.org has turned into the Us Weekly Magazine of games.

Their Wii will be collecting dust as they play new games in HD.

I smell some re-education torture in the near future.
Computers are just not designed to accept input, and increment and integer. Its crazy talk, more science fiction than reality.

I mean, how many times does Novell have to sit on the brink of bankruptcy before they get it?
