No better or worse, considering humans will have to construct the algorithm of what to do. Another question is...when (not if) little Johnny or Fido gets run over, who gets sued? The programming team, who are now 'driving' several million cars?
The child or the parked car. The child or the dog. The dog or going into the ditch. Sideswipe the parked car or bump the moving car next to you.
Sometimes, the situation and physics dictates you must choose one or the other to hit, instead of the preferable 'neither'. There is no other escape route. I wonder how that will be handled.
Yes, but the clearances needed for automatic cars are a LOT smaller. If an aircraft is 10' off the centerline of the runway, no big deal. A car being 10" off the line could very well lead to a crash.
Can you name a single example of an American abroad being killed by terrorists (or by a dude in an alley in Paris) where the motive was the victim being from America, as compared to any wealthy nation?
I'm, (sort of) in the Air Force, and I concur. DoD uses a variety of systems. Apple, MS, Linux, Solaris, UNIX, etc, etc. Are we talking about Linux on everyones desktop? Not a chance. That would require a decade+ of investigation and deliberation. But for other areas, OS diversity abounds.
My current programmable thermostat does that. Ok...only 7 day blocks at a time. But if gone for several weeks, I could set it to low, and come 'up' every Sunday (or whatever my return day is). Reprogram when I get back.
But the end to end infrastructure needed to allow me to reprogram my climate control via web or phone, for a maybe once a year instance, is way beyond what I want to do. Or pay for.
"Dishwashers, air conditioners, house lights, and more will be connected directly to a 'smart' electric grid, making it possible to turn them on and off using your cell phone or any Web browser,"
If I am out...why in the hell do I want to take time to manage all my household appliances? I am 'out' for a reason. Presumably to have fun. Other than that, I am at home or work.
Heat and A/C? Nope, sorry. Either maintain a constant temp, or follow the damn program I already gave you. Dishwasher? Oh please. If it's full enough, I'll start it now. Empty it whenever. Or maybe I'll start it just before I go to bed. House lights? Again...follow the (individual) timers, or just stay off. Simple, cheap, pretty foolproof.
What possibly would I need to change settings on if I am 'out'. About the only thing I can think of that I might want to alter is the TiVo settings. Which I can do already. And that is (for me) a non issue. In two(three?) years, I haven't found a need to do it once.
If you're serious about cycling, it's another matter entirely.
Exactly. I don't currently own a Ti bike, but this summer that may change. Apparently, you know too many poseurs.
the nickel in stainless steel is too tightly bound to leach with perspiration.
Stainless steel may be different, but with the more common non-stainless steel my skin tells me otherwise.
For the record I doubt spectacle frame made from 316 would trigger any allergy, sounds more like salesmen praying on consumer ignorance in order to sell a more expensive product to me.
Cross referencing all the possible different alloys with all the different frame styles is way too much work when I know the Ti does not have the same problem.
YMMV, but it works for me. Plus, the frames are actually stronger.
After having steel framed glasses for many years, and started getting a skin reaction exactly where the frames touch my skin...I asked the optometrist about it. She said "oh...you have nickel allergy. You need something else besides steel frames."
Bought the (too expensive) Ti frames, and the condition went away almost immediately. Within days. Couple years later, tried another pair of steel ones. It started coming back. All Ti from then on.
And the Ti frames are significantly stronger/more flexible.
It has good tensile strength and low weight but few applications warrant the additional expense.
Wrong. Several I can think of. Here's a couple that I have personal experience with.
Bicycles. A Ti bike is a noticeably different ride than other materials. Eyeglasses. Steel contains quite a bit of nickel. Many people are allergic to it, and get a rash when in constant contact with it. So, in eyeglasses, you have a choice between regular steel, Ti, or plastic. Guess which wins.
We're cruising along at 30,000', having a 'teaching moment' about cloud formations and what all those little 'squares' are, when the asshat next to us decides that I must redirect my scholarly pursuits, and instead explain what is wrong with that mans butt.
Children will see things eventually, so instead of hiding the truth from them, as an adult give them some parallax and understanding on what they are seeing.
The problem with that is that it is not up to you to determine when I should have a teaching moment with my kid.
Do you invite your kids into the room when you and the wife are gettin it on? Do you surf porn with your 6 year old? Have you explained the finer details of tubgirl to her?
My kid wants a OLPC. But you can't just buy one. My kid isn't a good, African kid, she's a bad, American kid.
Your 'American kid' has far more resources to draw on that the target audience of these laptops. You, the dad, has the resources and ability to basically build her a laptop for cheap. You already have a 24/7 internet connection, ready for this laptop to connect to. She has PC's in school...all her friends (and their parent) have PC's at home. She can very easily go to the local library to use the computers there. If you work in any medium size company, you can probably scam an older laptop for free (I have 3 such laying around).
You popping for a brand new, dual core, multi gigbyte HD laptop for under $600 is far less of a financial impact than an OLPC would be for any of the target audience. Or...you popping for a $399 OLPC (and a tax deduction of $200) is far less of a financial hit as well.
Should we also be bitching because the 'good African kids' also get free rice and 'bad American kids' don't? Or that 'good African kids' get a well dug in their town by the Peace Corps, and YOU, the downtrodden, poor American, has to actually pay taxes for clean, filtered, unlimited, water delivered to the multiple taps in your house at any temperature you desire.
Oh...and if you happen to come across a cheap/free laptop, you (Mr. computer wizard) can install the OLPC image on it and your daughter can have almost exactly the same thing. (unfortunately, that image is outdated. I hope they publish a current one soon)
Core charges are on things like brake pads, alternators, and water pumps. Replace the worn bits, and the 'core' can be reused/rebuilt into an almost new part. Tires and batteries carry an environmental disposal fee.
The only way this could be instituted is that you are assumed to be a child. Upon going to a particular site that may or may not have 'adult' content, the user will have to attempt to prove he is not a child. Of course, such 'proof' is impossible. You never really know who is behind the keyboard. That impossibility is primarily why the Communications Decency Act of 1996 got shot down. It puts the onus on the adult to prove his legality.
How about they fire him and he leaves with NO money? That makes even BETTER business sense. I can pretty much guarantee that if I royally screw up at my job I won't be receiving any bonus and I'll be looking for work again.
Firing you is not going to make the shareholders and Wall street skittish, and make the stock go off the deep end. Outright firing the CEO means the board made a bad decision. What other bad decisions did they make? Let me dump my stock in that company now.
No better or worse, considering humans will have to construct the algorithm of what to do. Another question is...when (not if) little Johnny or Fido gets run over, who gets sued? The programming team, who are now 'driving' several million cars?

ot a single passenger jet has been downed from the type of missiles these "high power lasers" are supposed to be able to prevent. Not a single one.
Very true. Not yet, anyway.
And not for lack of trying. I'll leave it to the reader to look up attempts at this.
Can you name a single example of an American abroad being killed by terrorists (or by a dude in an alley in Paris) where the motive was the victim being from America, as compared to any wealthy nation?
Robert Stetham
Leon Klinghoffer

I use this same technique to heat my pool. When filling it up in the summer...
Why do you empty it in the fall? Treat it well when you're done for the season, and you don't have to blow 15-20-30,000 new gallons in the spring.
a bunch of glassy craters inhabited by trash and rats
You forgot the roaches. There will always be roaches.
Especially in NYC.

Bah, fools.

Quit yer bitching.
Computer controlled, fully programmable.
Lite-o-rama
If you're insane and anal enough to do it right. Some of the displays are pretty impressive, though. In an over the top, freaky, kind of way.
Core charges are on things like brake pads, alternators, and water pumps. Replace the worn bits, and the 'core' can be reused/rebuilt into an almost new part. Tires and batteries carry an environmental disposal fee.
Maybe that's the way they will lose the least amount of money.
So.. How long until America tries this? I'm shocked we haven't already.
About a decade ago. It got shot down.
I mean, then we'll really be living in a dictatorship
Indeed.
Of course I expect to be told I'm wrong, I'm just curious to hear why.
You're wrong because it's different. With printed material, alcohol, tobacco...you can 'prove' age at point of sale.
On the Internet, not so much.
Bull.
.kids or .xxx TLD is equally stupid.

So why is it that America likes to shop at Best Buy, and not at Circuit City?
We don't like either of them. But for a hands on buying experience, often there is no alternative.

Not saying it's right, but that's the way it is.
