Amateurs certainly are still making valuable contributions to astronomy.
An asteroid is certainly an object that an amateur can pick up.
The professionals do not have the capability to be sweeping all the sky all the time, even if they were only looking with lenses with as little magnification as amateur equipment (and these days, good amateur equipment is quite good)
It's entirely possible that the big one will be found by the little guy.
While an Outlook killer will go along way toward helping OSS onto the business desktop, what would *really* help would be an Outlook-compatable Exchange killer.
Doesn't seem like it would matter. Your car wouldn't have to report how fast you are going; conceivably, anyone on the road with you could snitch, or set their car up to automatically report speeders.
Frankly, I don't care. People drive too fast, especially 18 wheelers. There would be a lot fewer fatalities if everyone just slowed down.
Funny, Counterstrike was developed on someone else's engine and at first it was done for no cash beyond internet advertizing, and just out of the love of what they were doing.
There are artists and writers out there who volunteer to help make great free (as in beer usually) games, but they want to see their work widely appreciated, and the install base of a single major game with a moddable engine on windows is larger than the entire linux gaming community.
There just isn't an open-source equivalent to say, the HalfLife2 Source engine, and people whose primary concern is creating a great game that lots of people will play are going to look to that rather than what's going on in the OS gaming world.
I think Depp might be making a mistake here. While I don't doubt that Burtan can improve on the direction of the original (which was nothing special, really) Depp is really putting himself in danger by reprising a role played by a superior actor.
And in general, I think Depp has been overexposing himself in the past few years. He seems to be something of a generational hero among college aged kids these days, but people can still get tired of him. He's fun and he's cool, but he really lacks subtlety.
As the whole Dan Rather thing proved, a story dies the moment a single piece of evidence gets discredited. I strongly suspect that this is somehow a plant, which will be proven false, and thus divert the media attention (and thus political fallout) away from the Diebold question.
Now one could expect the media to approach this with a grain of skepticism and maturity. But since the most common method of news delivery these days is a panel of experts screaming at each other, I have no expectations of this happening.
Basically expect the blue talking heads to pounce on this, blowing it out of proportion. Then it will get discredited, allowing the red talking heads to bury the story in what should be a small, side debate, as there are many other important pieces of information to be considered in this very very important question.
Frankly only a handful of people know if voting was rigged. There are certainly some suspicious things that happened, but that doesn't prove anything. Unfortunately, we'll probably never know, because what should be a sober investigation is going to turn into a political circus of the first order.
OK, while this might suggest that there is some bias within the scientific community toward the global warming hypothesis, it *definitely* proves that there is UNVBELIEVABLE bias in the political and opinion communities against the global warming hypothesis.
While perhaps there hasn't been enough good research done on the counter hypothesis, the people loudly claiming that there is NO good evidence for global warming and that there are mountains of evidence against it are either A) lying through their teeth or B) swallowing blatantly biased (non-reviewed) sources without critically appraising them.
There is legitimate reason to doubt the claims (especially the most alarmist claims) of the global warming crowd. However, there is also a whole lot of reason to think this is at least a small to medium long term problem, and possibly a severe one. I'm not an expert on Kyoto, so I won't make any claims on that one, but there are certainly reasonable steps that can be taken to reduce CO2 emissions with minimal economic impact, and we should be actively researching replacement technologies for the worst offenders.
It isn't reasonable to shut down any major industries or force immediate and possibly harmful change on the developing world because of somewhat questionable science. It is also increadibly unreasonable to ignore the mounting evidence that this is something of a problem.
boy if ever there were a clear demonstration

This has to be the clearest example of the difference between free as in speech and free as in beer.
I think it's best to view global warming like gun safety. If you don't know whether or not a gun is loaded, you treat it like it is.
There is research that suggests human activity is having a major climactic impact on the planet. There is research that suggests that it might not be as bad as all that. But until we know for sure, it would be very smart to play it safe.
This is going to be used for amateur porn right? As I understand it BitTorrent needs simultaneous downloads to really function, and who has home movies that a whole lot of people really want to watch?

Just because it hasn't happened yet...
or you could just track debian stable and not worry about 2.6 kernels for *years*

GIMP's interface is the leading travesty in open source desktop software.
I prefer dubbing in the theaters and subtitles at home.
Reading text on a big screen takes my eyes off the visuals for a moment, and in a Ghibli movie, that's unforgivable.

Read the article. 6.2% of people don't have wired phones *AVAILABLE* to them.
There's still a shocking amount of rural poverty in this country. This doesn't really surprise me at all.
By slashdot standards, the old people in South Korea joke is brand new.
Oh and uh...

3. Profit!

They're really trying to legislate the fun out of being young. I'm glad to be in my 20s right now.
yes but bush is actively rolling back much environmental progress that was made in the 90s.
the democrats suck on progressive causes, but they can generally be counted on to not do much further harm.

your comment and your sig are a funny combination
I don't believe an ounce of this.

Lost, Arrested Development, and (maybe depending on your tastes) Desperate Housewives
and then HBO...
it's actually a pretty good year for TV, if you ask me
really, i mean, the plot of doom is basically "guy shoots stuff," would it be that much better with satanic imagery?
it's a fun game... but a movie?
Spam is canned spiced ham. It's pretty good, even when cold.
I dunno... it was a lot better than Temple of Doom.
Hey now. That was one of the best TV series ever. Don't disrespect.

Oh yeah, naked people.
Damn that website is partyin' like it's 1996.
