    Even the folks with ears have moved on. Digital was arguably inferior to high-quality analog in the early years, but there aren't many (working) engineers/producers pushing that anymore.

    The OP is correct. Some of us have to use our browsers at sites that demand IE. I was in this situation at my last job, and it's not like I switched it back to 'Firefox' every time.

    I assume you are talking about the 'apps' that came with the OS you use.

    Can your 'find' function search PDF files? Can it search _in_ files at all? Does your filesystem provide metadata to search on?

    Your argument might be valid for users of OS X, but for the rest, these apps provide functionality that is not found in the OS.

    I was going to say that this couldn't have been the apex predator, but then I thought to RTFA, only to discover that NZ had no land mammals before human settlement. Interesting.

    So its rapid increase in size appears to be a case of island gigantisism. I wonder if the number of flightless species in the area were caused by the presence of this predator in the air?

    I meant it in a 'get-the-trains-running-on-time' sense. Most would agree that a dictator can get things done more quickly than a demroctatic system.

    Regardless, you're right that it would not result in a sustainable solution, because as soon as our benevolent dictator, praise be to him who installed solar panels in all our homes and built efficiant public transoprt that we all had to use, kicks it, we'll go back to the old plan...

    Although I agree that reading is important, it's not the same as experience. Good coder/mechanic/engineer/scientists tend to be the folk who got thier hands dirty at an early age.

    It's nice to see someone (Joel Spolsky) rip into .NET as it deserves. I've never worked with .NET or C#, and I understand it has some things going for it (the language itself and the IDE are often mentioned), but I've never been able to grasp what .NET actually _was_.

    I have several hobbies and interests that, in the context of writing an informative, correct wiki article, I am an 'expert' in. Wiki articles shouldn't contain original research, they should cover what's widely agreed on about the subject, and point the way towards differing views, something that any layman with an interest in a subject should be able to do.

    That said, nothings going to stop some kid saying he's an expert on something 'cause his class covered that subject in grade 5.

    I personally think much of this critisism againt wikipedia is misguided. Wikipedia is what it is, a sprawling collection of data that should be taken with a grain of salt. If you reference wikipedia in a paper you're a fool. Larry Sanger strikes me as a whiner, who is no longer employed by wikipedia, and no longer contributes, and can only badmouth the project and call it a failure, while ignoring the sucsesses. The man has posted this same critisism all over the web. His 'expert' articles are the long winded, over acedemicized crap most people cringe at reading. (IMHO) Thank God wikipedia lets people fix that.

    _Any_ data about the interior of a comet would be informative, and will incfluence theories about the formation of the solar sytem.

    Nice list. I gave up caring about 'Linux on the Desktop' some time ago. I have linux on all my machines, and it's more than good enough. I give any needed time to helping my nongeek friends with linux, and my only response to friends using windows is 'Sorry, I have no idea how to make your computer run like it did yesterday."

    I'm continually dismayed by efforts to spin critisism of Israels forign policy into anti-Semitism, blatent at that.

    This report, backs up the factual statement that Israel has been the biggest recipiant of US $ than any nation since 1976, and has recived, by far, the largest total amount of any nation.

    Oh, and also that Jews are planning to take over the world via Hollywood.

    The WHO has for some years been trying to educate disaster response folk about the (relativly minor) dangers of corpses. See this article. They stress that effort is better spent on the needs of the surviovers than on burying the victims.

    Muslim belife requires that all effort be spent to bury the dead within 24 hours. I hope that doesn't get in the way of providing care.

    I feel comfortable with saying that humans will no longer be human when we run out of IPv6 addresses. Other folk have posted the numbers. They are very big numbers.

    That said, unwise allocation of those addresses could change that, like the fact that MIT has more IPv4 addresses than Japan.....
