    Ummm, I hope you pretend to an ignorance you do not possess. I can think of any number of reasons why such information could be of use in such a situation, and why making it available on a website (security?) might have its issues.

    Be that as it may, many other countries impose legal requirements on credit reporting agencies to make their records available to the individuals concerned, and I see no reason why the US should be an exception.

    In other words, as far as Debian is concerned, stable == fossilised, i.e. too ancient to break.

    For those of us who require something more than a basic server (which, of course can be done without any kind of screen at all, let alone an X server or Gnome/KDE/blackbox/whatever), something a little more current is necessary.

    Hmmm... but let's face it, the latest Gnome releases have not been without its bugs and quirks, not least the dispute as to whether or not to install and use hal and dbus, and consequences arising therefrom (which in my case, incidentally, were mostly bad).

    Before the flames start, I've been a big fan of Gnome for 7 years now, but of late I have been increasingly attracted by KDE.

    I too am waiting for Sarge, to replace the Slackware on my little home server.

    Why? I know Slackware might not be attracting too many new users at the moment, owing to Pat Volkerding's illness, but it is still an excellent server platform by any standards.

    OK, I admit I'm a bit biased, since Slackware is also my primary desktop platform, where it fits very nicely.

    FWIW, my household is one that is partly making the switch from Linux to OSX. There are several Slackware boxes littered around the house, and my wife has hitherto been happy with this arrangement.

    However, she is now getting a Powerbook (prompted primarily by a requirement to be able to use EndNote), so she has given me some food for thought as to how to intrgrate it into the network.

    I would be curious to know how you do that. Object prelinking, perhaps?

    On my Slackware 1GHz Athlon I just timed it at 15.7 seconds from clicking the launcher on my desktop to getting an "untitled" swriter window. Agreed, though, it's a damned good application - but IMO Abiword just doesn't cut it at all.

    Incidentally, I had been under the impression that OOo2.0 was still a long way off, but here's the relevant extract from the roadmap:

    Plan:
    November 2004: Beta Release Candidates
    December 2004: OOo2.0 Beta
    January 2005: OOo2.0 changes will be done on separated branch, the trunk (HEAD) will then be used for the next OOo major (3.0 ?) release.
    February 2005: OOo 2.0 rc
    March 2005: OOo 2.0

    Err... while I agree that ad hominem arguments are egregious, I dispute your statistics. From here, I see two parties with a fairly equally insignificant contribution to the Slashdot community. Furthermore, Sameerdesai, in his most recent 24 posts has scored 23 positive karma points and 3 negative, while xstonedogx scores 18 positive and zero negative.

    That's what I do, too.

    I have folders with manymany subdirectories for stuff that I have archived, but everything else gets filed into a "wip" (Work In Progress) directory until I have the time or inclination to deal with it.

    Since I have so much of it, I file software and updates elsewhere (where it gets backed up all the same), with subdirectories such as "sys", "science", "web_utilities", "multimedia" and "cool".

    Mozilla Suite might have been overshadowed by it's leaner sibling :)

    It certainly has in this household... Some time ago I thought the intention was to cease further development of Mozilla as Firefox matured. Looks like that's gone by the board.

    I don't know what kind of buzz it gives, but 250 mL at 100% w/v will kill you.

    I realise the US can (and probably will) tell the rest of the world to just go fuck itself, but those countries who have joined it in refusing to ratify the Kyoto protocol (I am specifically thinking of Australia here) might just find themselves frozen out economically, as other nations struggle to meet the obligations they have agreed to.

    As rising fuel prices are likely to cause some kind of a crunch in the US over the next few months, I can't see how well the US is going to fare, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear of increased pressure to play ball.

    Why don't we just kill all the politicians and allow the courts to decide how the existing laws should be interpreted, instead of buggering around with making new laws?

    That isn't actually as silly as it sounds. But why stop there? Why not kill all the lawyers as well, declare a state of anarchy, and let common-sense prevail instead of a divisive and unjust legal system. That would also put paid to such idiocies as patents offices and taxation authorities.

    After all "justice" in court-speak is only there for those who can afford it. So maybe we should kill all the rich as well...

    Stop laughing, dammit, I'm serious.

    Well, I am not a medical specialist of any kind (though I am a microbiologist of sorts), and from what I've read, protracted cases of serious infections such as this are sometimes only successfully treated under hospital care with really agressive antibiotics such as vancomycin, which can leave you deaf as a post if administered wrongly.

    Be that as it may, if you're reading this, Pat, I hope you find something that works soon. We'll still be here when you get better. Slackware-current can wait. :-)

    Maybe I'm being obtuse here, but if the submitter wants everything on one page, he could simply save his bookmarks.html file (assuming he's not using IE) to a flash drive, or even a floppy, and carry it in his shirt pocket.

    But maybe that's just too simple. :-)
