Why does the title give me a mental image of the scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail where King Arthur and co are trying to get into the Castle... Except it's microsoft execs being taunted by penguins.
I really need some more coffee.
So why wern't they in space 20 or 30 years ago then?
I'm not, in no way, diminishing China's achievement here. It's miraculous how China has turned itself into an economic powerhouse that has the money to spare to be able to build a rocket and crew pod capable of doing this.
My point is, is that private enterprise will take over from governments who have "better" things to spend their money on. If a private enterprise uses billions of dollars to get into orbit, then it's only the shareholders who have chosen to be a part of that company that take the profits or losses of that grand adventure.
If a country does it, then there are always large elements of the citizen populous who do *not* see the value of millions of dollars / roubles / yuan being pumped into sending a select few into the great unknown.
China will eventually face the same stagnation in it's populace where space flight no longer excites them , and even though it's not a democracy, I beleive that the people of China would rather see that money go into further benefits on it's own land, than burnt in fuel.
I can fully see private enterprise catching up and overtaking any country in the world when it comes to space flight. Either for tourism, science, or cargo.
There is no real country based 'space race' anymore in the western world. Corporations are going to take over where the governments leave off.
China is 50 years behind the times, and eventually it'll be the corporations there that take over the space flights, too.
OMG, I know you won't beleive me on that one, but QIX was actaully designed as part of a competition in the UK, I forget the exact details as I was just a whippersnapper at the time but I remember reading in my C&VG that Taito had chosen a winner of a compy it had been running for 'most innovative game design'.
It wasn't long after that that I was spending my 10 p's (quarters, for our american chums) at the kids room in the pub, playing this game. Still a favorite after all these years. Way ahead of its time gameplay wise, far more akin to something like tetris than the space invader/pacman/donkey kong clones that were so prevelant in 81/82.
Why did that make me think of the end of the Benny hill show? I can just see Frodo being chased round by nine scanitly-clad ringwraiths...? Dee do dee dee dilly diily doo do dee dee dilly dilly.....
My friend, sounds like you need to play the Realistic Internet Simulator. Get that popup closing hand some practice!
Seriously though, the last thing any of us need to see is more of this junk. the worst is when you're on an IE machine and along come the unclosable popups... yeuch!
Oh, undoubtedly. 'Slipping' was probably too strong a word to use. Theres stacks of vinyl in the house I'm that are taller than me. I think what I was tryin to convey was that as technology rolls along, and the CD-decks become more and more prevalent, that vinyl is going to lose SOME (not all) of its grip.
And those CDJ-1000's are fun, arn't they?:) The CDJ-800 is a good lower priced alternative. All the features of the 1000 except the memory points, I beleive.
Well, I live with a couple of DJ's, and while vinyl still ha a huge hold on the dance music industry in particular, its fading due to the accessability, drop in price and general features of such decks as the Pioneer CDJ-1000. And it s been a while since I've seen a set decks without even a low end dual CD player - something such as the Numark CDN25. Makes CD-DJ'ing accessible for even the bedroom DJ's.
Vinyl still has a massive hold on the DJ industry, but it's slipping...
Just my 0.02.
From my point of view, no Next Gen movie has ever received the PR hype that used to occur with the Original series movies... Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock in particular garnered a whole bunch of media attention... all the next gen movies seem to receive is "Oh, its a star trek movie, how nice"
Like everyone else, I blame Berman and Braga, who have single handedly destroyed one of the best franchises in Scifi history. - And I'm not even a rabid star-Trek fan, I just like good TV and Good movies, and since B&B took over, its all been lacking.....
Amen! I had a forth compiler for my Sinclair Spectrum. It was actually the second language I (tried) to learn after BASIC. As I recall, there was a nice glossy ad for the FORTH book and tapes inside the instruction manual for the ZX Spectrum + I was the proud owner of... ahh... those glorious halycon days... *sniff*
So, its been around a while! Can of Quattro, anyone?
Sounds great in theory, however, what happens when users change roles, get promoted, demoted..... and what they have to do with their terminal changes as a result. You'd have to have a staff working full time at any average sized company making the system changes to keep this thing from triggering constant alerts.

We'll never find them when they fall then..?

If you're blogging about logging,
While sitting in a tree,
Then the chances are,
You're a geek hippie.
Swaying in the branches,
Laptop in your hands,
No safety net to speak of,
Just a couple of rubber bands.
Be safe up in the treetops,
And please try not to fall,
Despite all that long hair,
You will not bounce at all.

I'm not supporting our Chinese friends if this article is true, but it would seem to me that whats good for the goose is good for the gander, no?
