Your 60's group friend has a good point. That larger upfront payment also gives the label a deeper interest in getting that money back, and they will go to the trouble of promoting that band a little better.
75% of the bands a label signs each year are *expected* to fail by that label. Getting a larger advance helps ensure a spot closer to the other 25%.
It's more fun if you sing the first line as
"Ozzy lost his mind". I'm also in agreement
with "Has he" over "Icy", I'm pretty sure.
Reader's Digest had an article once about
"satanic" rock music which had some interesting interpretations of "Paranoid"; "thought you were
my friend" became "Oh, shoot out my brains!" and
"I tell you to enjoy life" was "I tell you to
end your life". Har har.
Ozzy is the man though. I'm staring at this keychain, there is a giant chicken skull above his head.
Right. Much of that $3 is spent on marketing
and promotion. Plus, as noted, most artists
get a dollar amount as an "advance" that they
are obligated to pay back through record sales,
and usually have to pay back the costs for studio
time as well. So in a sense both figures are
correct, as.50 would be about what the average
artist sees while approx $3 is the amount the
record company, figuring in the above numbers,
sees as their expenditure. (Bigger name artists
with more clout and/or proven hit sales potential
can often negotiate terms a little higher than
this, but not by much.)<P>
"Market research" told the filmmakers that many Americans had never heard of the Philosopher's Stone, but they pretty much knew what a sorcerer was so that's what the movie's going with.
Sort of like when test audiences for the Flinststones film didn't get the joke of Fred Flinstone's secretary being "Rosetta Stone", so they changed it to "Sharon Stone". Or "The Madness of King George III" being released as "The Madness of King George" because otherwise people would think it was a sequel.
Congrats, it would appear that you have won!
A singular achievement indeed, apparently being chased by several folks here.
As a ranking member of the FP community, however, I am saddened by the new numbering system. It appears that many will move on to contests involving milestone comment numbers (such as you have accomplished with comment, um, "2200000"), but somehow it doesn't quite have the feel of first posting. Less like racing, more like Lotto.
However, I do not wish my comments to detract from your win, as I wish to offer you congratulations of the type once shared between all the great FPers back in its heyday. WTG, and, emphatically, w00t.

congrats. perhaps Jon will write another article about you in light of this wonderful achievement.
thought headline said "horniness".
Can't go wrong with the EA Sports titles.

If you haven't seen any of his movies, you might
have read some of his website. Truly an American icon.

James Taylor's first band was called the Flying Machine; their breakup was the basis of that verse. Just a bit of useless trivia, there...
