  2. Re:Event Horizon on The Speed Of Gravity Revealed · · Score: 1, Interesting

Light (in the form of photons) has mass. The only reason that gravity "doesn't" have mass is that we have yet to find a particle form of it (i.e. a graviton). If this were ever discovered, gravity would then have mass. It would also lend convenient symmetry to the universe as we have force-carrying particles for the other 3 universal forces (electromagnetic (light), strong nuclear and weak nuclear). I personally think that we will someday discover a graviton.

  3. Re:Wow. on The Speed Of Gravity Revealed · · Score: 3, Informative

Well, actually that's not actually true, depending on how you define weak (the adjective). Gravity exerts the smallest force, but it does so over the greatest distances. OTOH, Electromagnetic forces are very powerful, but only over short distances. The nuclear strong and weak forces fall in the middle accordingly.

"Population control is about trying to reduce the number of births."

I find one thing aggravating about this. When people make this statement, they often neglect to mention that this applies only in countries where the birth rate is way out of control (e.g. Kenya which used to have avrg. 8 kids/woman). In other, developed countries (e.g. Europe, N. America) there is no harm in having 2-3 children/couple to maintain a sustainable population. Currently, the populations in these countries are drastically shrinking and are only kept afloat by immigration. This is bad because, as a few recent studies have shown, there is a lower percentage of children comprising the total populations of these countries. As far as I am concerned, that is a very bad thing.

end rant. sorry for the OT post.

It is entirely possible that our eyes require very similar forms of calibration, but that we have not even theorized the existence(sp?) of such a problem b/c we don't spend nearly as much time watching lossily encoded images as we spend listening to lossily encoded sounds. Is it possible that a form of this could partially account for eye-strain from staring at a monitor for hours on end? Um actually, as the article mentioned briefly, the wright's approach to airplane control was all wrong. They used an approach called wing-warping which deformed the entire wing in order to control the plane. This guy use ailerons which are used in modern planes because they are mechanically simpler and more aerodynamically efficient.

That said, I think the US Air Force is taking another look at wing-warping technology for extremely high speed flight. There's a NASA page about it; if someone feels like googleing there's prob. karma to be got :-)

One thing not obvious in the chart is that quarks have not actually been observed yet. This is extremely odd, as any particle with a charge of 0x1 or -1x0 should stand out incredibly well among all of the other particles. The quark model happens to be very convenient, and it accuratly models everything we know about the other subatomic particles; but it has never been experimentally observed.
