  1. money doesn't stink on Star Wars Episode III: Behind the Scenes Webcam · · Score: 3, Insightful

Holywood is a business. The primary goal of business is to make money, not to entertain.

I am not sure why the guy should be criticized for being old. Everybody grows old, some better than others. I hope you loose your anger as you grow older... Yes, sorry to break the news to you, the "olds" is not a group of other foreign people, you too will grow old.

I have to admit that being fat is a health risk, but that is his problem that has no consequence on what he does (producing movies), and apparently he has the money to deal with the consequences of his life style choices.

I am not sure why slashdoters tend to be very quick to criticize the successfull rich people out there... jealousy ?? Now if you are truly interrested in entertainment and talent, forget about big holywood production, start looking at what's produced locally in your area. Everywhere I've been, you can easily find incredibly talented musicians, singers, actors, etc... They typically are not rich, and paying to see them at your local theatre will make a big difference to them.

    Enjoy your day.

My guess is that they did that in a crowded place with a lot of people screaming, all buying or selling some stock too. Those places are called stock exchange, and they are a big part of any modern economy.

Is this a step towards some other interest group having a share of microsoft in exchange...

Typically one sell stock in exchange for cash. Typically one would either re-invest that cash in some other stock (this is called spreading the risk, or my like my grandmother used to say don't put all your eggs in the same basket), or maybe he spent the cash like on a new house (well a few houses !), a private jet, or whatever he felt like at the moment.

  21. There is place for everybody on Paul Graham: Hackers and Painters · · Score: 5, Insightful

"Perhaps one day "computer science" will, like Yugoslavia, get broken up into its component parts"

This is already the case. There are people specializing in writing comp-sci software (compiler etc...), there all those double-majors who write software for their other degree specialization (software for given domains like geophysical etc...), there are people who specialise on the ergonomic of the GUI, etc....

This isn't that different from people designing a car, a thing that is both functional and can be beautiful. It takes engineer and designer to make a car.

Now don't tell me "I am the creative type", I am writting software, science doesn't apply to me. I once work in a software lab where the lab had been producing software for several decades. One day the person in charge of QA convinced the person in charge of development to bring some quality type tools like cyclomatic analysis (McCabe etc...). A few engineer came up with that argument that they were producing art, that a software couldn't / shouldn't judge them.

Well, they did two things: They ran McCabe against a lot of their software, some that have been in the market for decades, and there was a direct correlation between the "level" the tool was finding and the number of patches applied to the piece of software. Then they analysed code per current programers: The artsy types were writting complex code that the QA dept. kept sending back !!

Conclusion, there is a place for "out there" artsy type to inovated in a small shop, there is a place in ergonomic to write "beautifull software", but a serious piece of software does need some science.

Think about this, how beautifull would a car that looks good but keeps breaking down be ? Doesn't this remind you a lot of the software out there ?
