Insightful?
I have not spoken to one professional, or one enthusiast, who would even dare to make such a silly claim. Technologically Beta was far superior to VHS, hands down. Better resolution, less noise, less crosstalk. This is something that has never been in dispute. Please though, feel free to list these 'features.'

Cuba is only unique in that the destruction caused by communism is so apparent everywhere.
Communism caused the alleged destruction? Did you hear that on FOX News?
If I was comparing 200MHz to 1Ghz, I would consider it slow as well. 1Ghz compared to 0.2Ghz. One fifth the power.
The only assumption you can make based on the one sentence you quoted from the article is that one processor operates at one fifth the frequency of the other.
=Obligatory Car Analogy=
If you had a car with 300Horsepower next to a car with 60Horsepower, what would you call the lesser car in a performance test?
If, and only if, you had those two engines in identical cars, you can be confident the 300HP car would perform better. Once you start changing factors, it's not as obvious.
That aside, speaking to the car analogy, horsepower describes how much work each car's engine could dish out, it's an actual meaningful metric. It is not analogous to Hz. Clock speeds describe how often something happens. A more apt analogy would be to compare the performance of two cars, one is at 3000rpm and the other at 2500rpm. Much like comparing clock speeds, it ignores how much work can be accomplished on every stroke. The only time rpm is a meaningful performance metric, is when all other factors are equitable (same car, same engine, same gear etc.) The same stands for computing and Hz.
How is this a fault of a manufacturer? Especially one that is not the creator of the Blue-Ray disk.
Good grief. Samsung has sat on the Blu-Ray board of directors since 2002, when it was called the Blu-Ray Founders. How exactly are they only a manufacturer?
Just a subtle reminder, Blu-Ray is not a Sony format
From Beta to MiniDisc to Memory Stick, Sony never successfully pushes a format on the North Americanmarket. I can only conclude that BluRay will be supplanted by an as-of-yet-unrevealed third technology. My fragile worldview cannot accept any other alternatives.
Fixed that for you. Most of the other formats were from fairly to very successful in other markets. Still, Beta was around for almost 3 decades, Minidisc almost 2. The problem wasn't the formats, it was the market they were targeted at. (think Pro.)
Exactly! There are too many Mac users all smug with the notion that their OS is super secure. Which is true, the system is secure - but the user is not. The first time they ignorantly run a malicious app that clean out the contents of their home they'll likely learn the distinction though.
Personally I've never fretted over having to reinstall an OS. I typically clean install with every major release. What I dread is losing my data.
How would they demand that? Microsoft simply does not care about HD-DVD enough to risk tanking it's game console like Sony did (by forcing the price up for something that doesn't actually help games).
How does 50Gb of storage hurt games, exactly? Just because most games now aren't any larger than what you can squeeze onto DVD, doesn't mean it won't happen in the future. The option is there. I'd say that is a perk.
2) The PS3 - Sony just don't get it. They didn't get it with BetaMax, they didn't get it with MiniDisc, and now they're repeating the same mistake with BluRay - apart from the mouth frothing PS3 zealots/fanboys - PS3 and BluRay have been a resounding failure.
Oy. How are mouth frothing Sony Bashers/Trolls any better than fanboys? You seem to be alluding to "failed" proprietary formats, but you don't seem to know which ones "failed" and which ones are proprietary.
a)Beta enjoyed a long life, especially in professional use. It may have been a consumer level failure in the end, but I wouldn't call it a total failure.
b) MiniDisc did and continues to do well in Japan where there were dozens of MiniDisc manufacturers. It did very well in NA too, and enjoyed a longer life than DAT if I'm not mistaken. It was the first format to bring us really portable digital music that didn't need a car battery to run. And during its run, was one of the few digital devices to allow recording as well.
c) A bit early to call the PS3 a failure, especially after only a year, and sales picking up. Blu-Ray isn't a Sony proprietary format. If you're going to call it a failure, you might as well call HD-DVD a failure as well. Funny it didn't make it on your list.
"Mars Asteroid Impact More Likely Than Before" doesn't look right. Seems to me the probability hasn't changed at all, in fact the only thing that changed was the precision with which the probability was calculated. Or am I missing something, and should just resume my New Years Eve drinking binge?
Does anyone else get the feeling that the editors actually do know what "begs the question" means, and are just screwing with us to get a higher post count?
Look at Origin Systems, Bullfrog, Jane or any of the once great companies that had great games and great tech, and were eventually gutted, discarded and forgotten.
And probably one of the best season/series finales ever made.
No sir. That distinction will always belong to Season 2 of Millennium, just for the final scene with Lara Means.
There are plenty of Linux users who are gamers. Most just don't game in Linux...

Not much bigger than the 'Earth is flat' barrier. It's only a matter of time before we reach the necessary level of understanding.
SOny decided to go off on a tangent...
and so on, and so on... a little research is in order, before throwing on the Sony Troll hat.

Then again, GAME BOY isn't a console. It deserves to be a part of this conversation as much as the Atari 800XL does.
If I'm not doing anything illegal, why would I pay an extortion fee on my internet connection which presumes that I am?
You're making the false assumption that downloading music is illegal. It isn't. Take a look at Canadian Copyright law someday.
Well, the first two seasons, I try to forget the third ever happened.
Anyone else remember the episode The Mikado from season two of Millennium? Based on the trailer, looks like the writers of this movie did too.
The Zune was in the Amazon top 10, too.

Not to mention I'd rather just about anyone control a standard for us then Sony.
Good thing there is also Hitachi, LG, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung and Sharp then I guess. You do realize that Blu-Ray isn't a 'Sony' format?

It certainly begs that very question!Naw, everything old is new again.
Look at Origin Systems, Bullfrog, Jane or any of the once great companies that had great games and great tech, and were eventually gutted, discarded and forgotten.
This is exactly why they release Time Machine at the same time! :)

Don't for get Compaq, the merger didn't do them (or their customers) any favors either....
This is not about the PS3, it's about the Cell found in the PS3.
Were that the case shouldn't they be suing IBM?
Most people can drive safely under normal conditions on the phone...
Most people think they can drive safely, quite like how most people think they are above average intelligence.
