You don't want to rely on a complex system in an emergency, period.

The cable infrastructure may continue during a power outage - but how about your cable modem, router and VOIP device? Sure, they may be good emergency alternatives for you, personally. But the average person isn't likely going to have UPS for those devices.

People who were without power for weeks during the ice storm, still had functioning phone service, long, long after their UPS would have died.

However, they aren't as buried in the quagmire of cookie cutter RIAA crap and American Idol rejects as the really good US artists are. But, you wouldn't know that listening to Rick Dee's weekly top 40, would you?

I won't bother naming names, since tastes vary, but I don't count Celine Dion or Nickelback in the mix.

Seems like a non-story to me. Wrath of Khan didn't have any spoken Klingon either...

Well, the obvious reason for that is there were no scenes with klingons to speak it in Wrath of Khan. There was no spoken latin either, for similar reasons. The big objection is that Klingons (the species) were removed from the movie along with their language when the only scene with them in it was cut. Both the summary, and the only slightly more wordy "article" touch on the fact.

P.S. I will NOT turn in my geek card. There were Klingon ships in the Kobiyashi simulation at the beginning of the film, but they don't speak klingon much anyway.

We're talking treating people who are almost certainly going to die anyway with a genetic approach that doesn't have even a theoretical way to spread to other people. The absolute worst thing that could go wrong is that the people being treated die from the treatment. The second worst thing that could happen is that we don't do the treatment and they die anyway; though maybe a bit later.

Really? If I were the betting type, I'd say just about everyone is almost certainly going to die, not just those afflicted with MD. The most important thing anyone can ask for isn't longevity, it's quality of life. Your list of outcomes is incomplete - I'd at the very least put "the treatment leads them to suffer more than they already do" far ahead of any others.

I've always thought that part of Firefly's charm is that it didn't live long enough for Whedon to muck it up and turn everyone into demons, vampires or other super powered freaks. It was nice that everyone was pretty much normal, besides River. But it's easy to see that would have changed.

Why the knee jerk reaction to facebook having the same policies as slashdot? If you delete your slashdot account, what do you think happens to all of your archived comments?

The majority of people who contribute on Slashdot are not only tech savvy, but have some understanding of licensing, copyright and the like. We enter in to such agreements knowingly (as far as the IANAL crowd can,) or, if we didn't read an agreement, we know *something* is there.

Most facebook users don't have an earthly clue how much privacy they're trowing away using the service and and completely unaware of what rights they have (or had) and how exactly the new TOS affects them.

The biggest problem for me, isn't as much the new TOS, but the fact that it was changed without notification, and by simply using my account, I've accepted the new TOS. That's plain dirty.

  23. Re:Mac Sales on Apple Prepares For the Coming iPod Slump · · Score: 1

The chart shows that Mac share went from 6.5% a year ago to 7.5% today, which is a significant increase. But note that the chart separates PPC Macs ("Mac OS") from Intel Macs ("MacIntel"), and here you can see that MacIntel's share has increased from 2.5% to 4.5% while PPC Mac OS decreased from 4% down to 3%.

I'm not sure comparing two operating systems (XP and Vista) to two hardware platforms (PPC and Intel) will make for any meaningful discussion.

That is, most Mac sales are due to people upgrading from Mac PPC to Mac Intel in the same way that most Vista sales are at the expense of XP's share.

Quite frankly, a majority of Mac users simply upgrade their OS when the time comes, since the system requirement changes aren't nearly as drastic.
