    I could see that.
    A swiss guard standing at the door to the cockpit of every plane, armed with a halberd and chainmail covered with kevlar.
    Short of a suicide bomber, that would make me feel pretty darn safe.
    Maybe a nice battleaxe instead, little more easy to wield in a confined space without killing the first row of passengers.

    Not that I think it IS a ricer controller or anything like that, it's apparently an excaliber gold, but it could have been the digital component of a ricer controller, just sending out on/off signalls to external components.

    I would say quite a few people are killed each year from ordinances resulting from the Civil War; I doubt very seriously we would have Jack Booted Thugs making no-knock raids on the wrong frikkin' house if the Constitution was still taken seriously, something which started with the War of Northern Aggression.

    I'm not known for supporting or even tolerating anything that infringes on anyones civil liberties, but I don't really have a problem with people having to show ID to fly aboard a commercial carrier.
    There is just too much chance of 1 person being able to cause harm to a large number of other people.
    If they required ID to fly in a private plane, or ride as a passenger in a auto, I would bitch very loudly.
    Of course, they just made it so that you have to tell the myour name when asked, but as far as I know it's not illegal to lie about what your name is, unless you actually end up being arrested.
    So I'm just bitching quietly, for the moment.

    As a point of respect, I try to never accuse anyone of being French unless there is no other choice.
    Only a portion of the people living in france really deserve the label; people who are of the culture of Bretagne, Normandie, Provence, and the Mountain areas are actually at times decent human beings.

    If you are American, and not familiar with the differences, think of the difference between someone from Texas culture and someone from Indiana culture; which person are you MORE likely to want to beat to death?

    Not as secure as what they have.
    I worked on FRB hardware (back in 2001, so things might have changed a little). 486 CPU. 56k modem. essentially just a automated BBS style dial-in to the central systems, very cheap, uncomplicated, almost nothing that can screw up, and if it does, easy to fix; completely disconnected from local networks, info fed in by floppy (usually only a couple a day).
    So of course I can understand why they want to modernize; the maintenance budget for the whole system on a yearly basis probably hits $5,000.

    Safety for others, not for you. the chevy will not even be slowed much by impacts with most modern vehicles; you only have to worry about other vehicles actually made of metal and stationary objects.
    as to economy, a well tuned big block with tons of performance will get 24-29mpg and low pollution if you keep your foot out of it, or more.

    Sorry, they pushed my ranting button.
    I've been around weapons, and weapons users, for around 35 years; I've seen people get shot, both accidentally and on purpose; I can say with absolute certainty that most police should not be trusted with a firearm.
    I've also seen the study you mentioned; it does not factor in prevented crime due to weapon use, simply because you can't prove a negative.
    I would be interested in seeing a study done on violent crime rates between gun owners and non-gun owners; include the rapes, violent assaults, etc. that one could assume were prevented by a defensive weapon. you would also have to factor in the area, of course; people might have a weapon in their house BECAUSE they are living in a high crime zone, others might not have one because they live someplace they can leave the doors unlocked at night.
    The weapons mod chip thing will be a Very Big Deal in the near future, and I can easily see the various industry groups using it as a argument.

    Amazing what depths of perversion hating something will make a person resort to.
    "Most of the time", huh? wow. over 50% of all bullets fired in defence hit innocent victims, huh? so every 2nd time a cop shoots his weapon in the line of duty, he is hitting a innocent bystander, or shooting himself? huh.
    screw it. people who think like this do not deserve to have the means to defend themselves, its better for the gene pool.

    Of course this does not currently apply to modchips, but it will in the future; when they start putting electronic recognition locks on weapons, and people find ways to defeat them.

    Actually, I'm pretty serious.
    It would really depend on what you looked like, and how you talked.
    think about some of the places you would have to go through; I know 'em pretty well because I'm probably related to just about everybody on a couple of major stretches of the route.
    If you didn't LOOK like someone that "deserved killin'", you'd probably get away with it.

    Squadboy pretty much covered things in his/her/its reply.
    The only thing I might add is the current "everything is illegal" trend lawmakers seem to be taking; nearly anything you do COULD be illegal; if you have any friends, surely one of them is doing something illegal.
    The cameras can be used to gather evidence of your activities not just for today, but far in the future; they provide blackmail material against everyone recorded ("on august 15th, 2004 at 3:49PM we have a image of you standing next to this man who we suspect of terroristic activities; if you continue to contribute money to amnesty international, we'll have to launch an investigation, and you wouldn't want THAT now, would you?").
    OK, it's extreme. but you are putting another weapon that could be used against you in the hands of people who constantly abuse their power.

    You have a small problem with your logic.
    you are presupposing that the cameras will be controlled by, and only available to, honest, loyal, trustworthy boy scouts.
    Logic, and a brief period spent reviewing documented police power abuses, should make it obvious that this is very far from the situation we actually have.
    and, BTW, don't forget that the Governor of Georgia declared martial law so he could deny assembly permits during the G8 conference...

    No doubt.
    For some odd, twisted reason (well, cheap acreage actually), i've been living in the south for the last 12 years; prior to that I was pretty cosmopolitan (St. Louis, Indianapolis, various points in Cali).
    If you painted "god is dead", put a "vote communist" bumperstick on your car and tried to drive from, say, Lexington, KY to Memphis, TN without taking the Interstate, you wouldn't make it.
