i agree with you... i have many files such as divx movies, mp3 files, and (misc) jpg's:)... these i dont need to backup becaue although losing them sucks its not totally crucial... well maybe the jpg's can stay... they are so small:)...
your assuming a lot with that process... unfortunatly all is not well and peachy in MS drivers land... your process will quickly fail if:
1) your NIC is not supported by MS (happens more than i like) 2) you have all your ASPI, PnP, DMA, I/O, and IRQ setting correct... most defaults work ok but if you have to manually configure anything on your system than you can't count on windows working right all the time... 3) if your NOT on DHCP as you said OR if you want to do anything more than simple web browsing... remember that win2k is officially a step up from NT and is designed for workstation/server markets... these are the type of environments where custom setting are needed... 4) and btw you forgot step 0... first turn the power switch off;)... sorry to nitpick but its crucial... oh wait... what if you have hot swap PCI and you want to not reboot and potentially cause mission critial data loss... well then maybe 2k wont work for you...
in my opinion win2k works most of the time but is not the best... neither is linux... the closest thing i have found to perfect would be mandrake linux because of the easy 'drake tools suite for auto configuring your system...
im glad that it doesn't happen to you too much (and it does happen to me too, i wasn't saying that its all female) but the problem is that a realtive or friend of mine is not knowledgeble enough about computers to understand what you do and do not need... some sales people take advantage of this and play a guilt trip like "you dont want the recipient of this gift to be unhappy... do you?"... but to be fair i must say that this doesn't happen very often but i have seen it happen...
... if someone from europe or aisa was affected by this could they (legally too maybe?) fight back?... would it be legal to use counter-counter measures?
unfortunatly i have seen this happen more often with female customers than male customers... its sad that people assume certain things about and try to make money off em like that... often times i hear about someone who's wife/girlfreind/mom/sister is trying to buy a geek some computer part... lets say they want to get some ram and they go to the store and come back with RAM, new ide cables, some new software (to make it work) and assorted other crap... what really makes me mad is when i go to a store and i tell the salesperson what i want and they tell me i need to buy all these extras or how the low end model wont work for what i have even after they CLEARLY understand i know about computers... often times the sales person is the one who really doesn't know anything other than the boss said "tell em to get pentiums cause they are better"... all these reasons are why i try to shop online more...
i never said the new card was fully DX9 complient nor did i say that this is the end of what we are going to see from matrox... the ati & nvidea cards you mentioned arent coming out for a while and by the time they do matrox will have a newer version of the parhelia... as i mentione before, the parhelia is more of an evolutionary step that you may want to consider but what i am really exited about is the future cards based off this one...
actually saying this is a "waste of electrons" is not true... if anything its a waste of electricity but no electrons are lost during the process of you reading this... remember that electrons flow in a circular direction and tis the MOVEMENT of those electrons that creates what you see... NOT actual electrons being "given" to your computer...
no... i think longhorn is MS's way to pass some "immunization" against the "viral nature" of the GPL... im sure they WILL try to pull a fast one on linux probably not jsut with incompatability but also but a new license... i hope not but i can see it happening...
How the hell is 256 bit ddr ram, full screen anti-aliasing that DOESN'T rape the framerate, and triple moniter suround gaming add up to be "so last year"?
Why dont you look into the technology of this card a little harder and you will realize that this technology is NEXT YEAR.
In fact some of the best features of this card wont be taken advantage of for months to come. DirectX 9 compliant cards? havent seen em around yet.
Of course this is not the "card to end all cards" but its a good start? Did you really expect the very first geforce 3 & 4s to be the best that the family of cards is good for?
Personally i dont think i will buy the first of these cards but as a proud owner of a G400 i can say that Matrox writing GPL'ed drivers has made my life MUCH easier.
your idea could be right but im sure that one of your first staements was true... how do you KNOW people have been happy with their unservicable cars... im not saying i know but i would be interested to know if people actually DO like it or if they have just been living with it...
bang for your buck is important but no matter how many economy machines you produce you can NEVER get up to what a Deep Blue can... so really the bet option is to go with both...
redneck comes from a while back when "rednecks" where the ones who were too poor to buy slaves in the south so they had to work their own land or even someone elses... redneck hints to being poor so it comes a derogitory term... in the southern at the time people used this phrase with its original intent people hwo were poor were thought to be dirty/stupid/uneducatable slobs... this is why rednecks are thought of as "trailer trash" or "country yokels" or some other name... but in a more modern US the term redneck is used to identify southerns and is a point of pride often as it identifies them with where they come from...
the two main types as many people know to creat cds are pressiong and burning... most comercial oporations will press their cds but sometimes they go cheap and burn em...
i agree with you... a techie will be able to test an album is slightly lower quality (mp3) and if s/he like it s/he can buy it at a higher quality... techies are the type of people who are more likely to say "well i dont prefer to listen to lossful audio so im going to buy the cd"... also i think less techies are "stuck" with a cd they buy unlike others who buy what they may or may not like...
your point kind of touches on the "viral nature" of the GPL... personally i think the word viral is loaded and FUD but it KIND OF describes the GPL... dont get me wrong i release MY software under the GPL... anyway...
under BSD your software can be used by OTHER closed source programs... so if someone wants to create a closed player than supports your open codec thats fine...
under the GPL having closed source software use open code is a BIG no-no... so this is why people clal the GPL "viral" it spread to the work it is used in... essentially it forces you to be all open or leave it altogether... IMHO this a good thing but maybe not for ALL projects...
that is EXACTLY what im talking about... people think of a pentium 4 system as a while different machine... kinda like you have Mac, Pentium, and some other varieties... like AMD and whatnot...
well this is the big difference between lin and win now isn't it... if you want a part of windows you gotta PAY... sorry... im sure you can "borrow" a disc from someone...
why would you want it???
well because they need to be able to say !!!PENTIUM 4!!! and most time they dont even list the mhz speed... most people i talk to think that all pentium 4's are the same... and to make it even worse most people i talk to think that having a pentium 4 will somehoe increase picture quality and perform magic such as souround sound and faster internet... its just a bunch of FUD but its why most people buy computers...
actually i do just that and i DOES increase performance... my win2k box has this nasty habit of needlessly swapping out data for apps suych as premeire even though i have 512 mb of ram... it seems to always want to keep 100 megs free so i set 256 or my ram to be ram disk and i set my default swap to there... i also have another REAL swap just in case i actually DO run out of ram...
you have this program running on a REMOTE computer... of course you would have it on your home machine but it would be best to simply have some overseas box have this sit and wait...
i agree with your idea but not your methods... handing out hand guns to passengers would do NOTHING... a hanbd gun is not a simple thing... it requires skill but thankfully that skill is easy to obtain with little instruction... not enough people in the US care about effecient gun usage anymore... terrorists could simply take a hold of 3/4 of the seats on the plain and then the few left would not be able to do anything... in fact if you handed out guns it would cause MORe problems as the inexperianced people might get a hold of them and really mess things up... have you ever ACTUALLY pointed a gun at another human... you even had one pointed at YOU.. i havent had either personally but i DO know how to fire guns and im not even sure if i would trust MYSELF with a gun on a plain...
one thing to remember is to not rely on future prices... like if you buy some type of burner get a LOT of media... you never know if it might go away or raise in price... media is so cheap that you can afford to buy a couple hundred peices and be ok
i agree with you... i have many files such as divx movies, mp3 files, and (misc) jpg's :)... these i dont need to backup becaue although losing them sucks its not totally crucial... well maybe the jpg's can stay... they are so small :)...
