Don't hold your breath, these chips will first appear in Professional desktop machines. They consume WAY too much power and generate too much heat to consider them as they are in a laptop format. We can eventually expect IBM to make a low-power version, but not until next year.
Anyway the 12 and 17" PBs have just been released, and although we might see a speed-bump, they won't be completely revamped soon. Waiting a few months will just mean you won't have the powerbook for those few months. These systems are still very hot stock, and very fast. You'll still want to upgrade at the same time in a couple years, because they won't get much faster real soon.
he's gonna have to rethink his working style. TV and movies are collaborative media, yet he insists that all the big insights be his and his alone.
I disagree. The best TV series ever (Babylon 5) was mostly a gigantic effort from one man: JMS. He had collaborators, just like Joss has, but the bulk of the work was his, and it showed. I say power to Joss all the way.
My Mind was somehow badly wired when I wrote that, and transliterated from the French (my native language).
I thought "Les paris sont ouverts", and somehow, instead of writing down the English equivalent (Place your bets), I translated literally. Happens to me sometimes both ways, as I use English and French about equally.
This is totally off-topic but I thought your observation skills warranted an explanation...
No really. If it's a software thing, shouldn't be too hard. If it's physical, like reacting to a catalyst, there is most likely some way to treat the discs so that they will remain usable longer...

Thus, "The Matrix" is 32527.
Turn the number backwards, and add 11 - the symbol of judgment and disorder. The number is now 72534.
Divide the number by 002 - this is the symbol of greed, backwards. It gives 36267.
Subtract 1789, the year of French Revolution, a bloody farce engineered by the Illuminati. The result will be 34478.
Subtract 9291 from the number - this is the year Bingo was invented, taking many lives in years to come, written backwards. It gives 25187.
Subtract 1977, the year Elvis left the planet. The result will be 23210.
This, when read backwards, gives 01232. This is 666 in octal, the number of the Beast...

Some who read this post may start wondering if he's not right, but trust me, he's just a sophist. And his whole logical construct falls apart when you examine this innocuous proposition of his:
They know that this is copyright violation, which is a bad thing to do.
The correct thing to say is that it may be an illegal thing to do, but to say it is wrong borders on religion. Laws only state things that are illegal, not whether things are right or wrong.
And it's a fine line between fair use and illegality, and as we all know, blocking the illegal behavior also prevents fair use. And fair use is legal; or do you think it shouldn't be?

Lets be realistic, how many slashdot readers would be without a job if their software was copied freely.
And here I thought many Slashdot readers were Open-Source proponents who indeed wrote software that could be freely downloaded on the internet...
I've seen those for years in Macs, same with NEC, TI, etc. Apple have often used AMD chips for their ethernet controllers on previous PowerMacs. There were AMD chips on some Quadra logic boards. Nothing new here or surprising, really.
I'm switching to a Mac before they get there. Yes, Apple controls the hardware and software, but they're not trying to control your lives. Bill Gates won't be happy until the time when he has complete control over our entire lives.
But why does he think he can just move the stuff to the Netherlands? He is still a US citizen and a Michigan citizen, and he is still producing the documents that are illegal.
Osama Bin Laden and his cronies are succeding in destroying the US. Not by planting more bombs, not by killing people, just through the fear they are causing. That fear is making people (politicians and others) ready to destroy the US from the inside. People like this woman are doing more to help the terrorists than someone who gave money to a terrorist, because she's doing their work from the inside.
There is no need for Al Quaeda to do any more serious bombings or to kill a single person, because there are now people in the US who are doing its work. But instead of killing people, they do a worse thing: they are destroying the very foundations of the civilization.
What these people do not realize, is that although life should be held as important, people can be replaced, and are. But a philosophy of life, a civilization, that cannot be rebuilt as fast. I may seem callous, but think of how people will look back on this in 25 years.
What's worse, is that these measures that reduce personal privacy and liberties probably won't help stop further terrorism attempts. Not that they need to do any more, with such people working for them.
Ashcroft should be arrested for attempting to destroy the foundations of the US. That's a worst act of terrorism in my mind than anything Bin Laden has done so far.
We did a previous story on There (a terrible name for a game since you can't search on it).
What are you talking about? Of course you can search for it, you just need to know Google's syntax. Search for "There" WITH the quotes. First result in!
No really. That's too fast. A full-length movie would be 2 hours. Why would you need to download it in 5 seconds? It will take you 2 hours to watch ANYWAY. So if you can stream it in a reasonable amount of time (like 2 hours) that would still be nice.
And I won't add the problem of hard drive speeds which can't handle it. Of course, big RAID arrays and the like can, but not consumer drives.
Of course, eventually, when we use a better quality encoding method for video/audio, the datarate may have to increase, but right now, it's useless.
"Accordingly, we are currently reevaluating our relationship with the SCO Group," Seibt continued. "That said, we want to very clearly and unequivocally voice our support of the ideals and goals of UnitedLinux and the Linux community."
That's certainly NOT how I read it. He said he was supporting the ideals and goals which would be completely different from actually saying he'd support UnitedLinux itself.
On the contrary, it seems to me that he purposefully avoided saying that he supported UnitedLinux. This is political-talk, didn't you learn how to decode it at school?
But you need more bandwidth. I could barely manage to register, and now it's timing out.
Posting your own web site on Slashdot is a good way to get noticed, but isn't it a bit masochistic?
That said, you need to work a bit on the layout and interface, but I really like the idea. I love using IMDB, and Amazon, being commercial, can have certain agendas regarding specific books, and can arbitrarily remove reviews and skew the votes.
You need a specific and clear policy regarding submissions, and a good work ethic if you want people to help. Don't sell out!
You're just another poor Apple-basher.
As if Realplayer and Windows Media PLayer, and every other player isn't the same. At least quicktime lets you CHOOSE which media you want to associate easily, and doesn't try taking control of everything else (read RealPlayer) if you tell it not to.
Quicktime is the best video technology out there, that's why they're using it.
The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. The 10th book is just out, and excellent. Characterization is very well done, and the story, although taking some time to tell, is fascinating.
Dan Simmons is one of my favorite SF authors ever, with Asimov and Herbert. The Hyperion Cantos (Hyperion, Fall of Hyperion, Endymion and Rise of Endymion) are absolutely fabulous books with a very rich philosophical content, a must for anyone who wants more than the usual drivel from a SF author.
Look at the sides here and read between the lines:
In the left corner, the BSA: the evil organisation which uses tactics that remind me of mafia racketeering to extract mounds of cash from honest people by forcing them to either pay lots for an audit which could, if errors are found, force them to pay even more, or pay even more upfront to save themselves? The organisation who act like they were the police and believe everyone out there is out to steal from their members?
In the right side, the RIAA: the evil organisation who'd like nothing less than to see the advent of big brother, with all of us forced to listen to whatever they want us to listen, and to pay for every second we're listening to it. I can imagine all of us chained to a "music meter" that calculates exactly what we owe them, and then a zoom to the RIAA headquarters, with artists chained to their desk to produce "music", virtually slaves to the most powerful organisation in the world, and I know that's Rosen's dream and everyone else's nightmare.
In the middle, as referees: the Lawyers, who stand to profit anyway this goes.
The result: Evil wins, whatever happens. Whichever side gets the best of the argument won't much matter in the end. But I suspect it will go like that:
The computer industry will spontaneously implement DRM methods across the board, just like the RIAA said, but by themselves without any rules or restrictions set by the government, and fair use will die. This profits the BSA, because it is also related to the patenting of code, and the destruction of open source. We'll be doubly screwed.
I'd be curious to know exactly which companies refused to get in this. I suspect Apple was one of them.
Steve Jobs, you're our only hope!
The Segway HT is not about what it can do now, but about what it promises about the future of human transportation.
It reminds me of some of the criticisms levied against the first cars: it costs too much, the horse carriage is better, it requires changes to the roads, laws are not ready, it will disturb pedestrian circulation (remember laws from the turn of the last century forcing someone WALKING in front of a car to warn people it was coming?), etc.
The point I am making is that the objections have some validity, but it doesn't invalidate the usefulness and promise made by the Segway about future human mobility.
Better versions will come, faster ones, more people will buy them, the price will come down, someone will clone it, and in 20 or 30 years we'll look back upon the original Segway HT like we look at the Ford Model T now.
It has to start somewhere, and it starts here and now.
