The trouble with Canada is that they could have gotten French cuisine,
American technology and English culture. Alas, they ended up with
French technology, American culture and English cuisine.
Banner ads are also blocked easily -- I use Privoxy for that. However,
text ads are quite a different thing. They are much harder to spot and
block, but then again, not nearly as annoying. For instance Google's
sponsored links are hardly annoying at all, IMHO.
Downloading the contents, even in the background, goes against one
basic reason for ad blocking: I pay for the bandwidth, so I decide
what goes through.
From the article it seems that the worst problem isn't the material in
the computer. It's the dangerous chemicals used to treat the waste --
for instance soaking the motherboard in a strong acid to extract gold
and other valuables. Likewise, the cable coatings may not be that
harmful per se, but the method of burning them to extract the copper
will probably produce harmful compounds.
OK, I've had my share of the Windows Experience. I didn't
like it so I decided to tune out. Now I'm using Free software because
it happens to work better for me. YMMV.
> Pretend like you don't know what the solution is and tell them
you can't help them.
Imagine I'm a Linux and BSD poweruser/sysadmin and the problem is related to
Windoze or Mac. I honestly don't know that much about those systems (nor
do I care to learn) so there's no 'pretend'.
I should probably explain this attitude more generally. Since I don't
have anything to do with Microsoft, there's no basis for me to bash(1)
their products. Likewise I don't fancy buying an Xbox to be modded
into a Linux box, because I don't want to be involved with M$ in any way.
In many cases
it's best just to ignore M$ quietly, and focus on doing your things
with the best tools. I know there's the practical problem of getting a
box (especially laptop) without Windows, but for many other things the
quiet way should work.
Think of it this way: M$ is the neighbourhood bully who gets his
satisfaction from pissing you off. He will be powerless if you just
ignore him.
It if actually were happening, don't you think there would be lots and
lots of publicity put forward by M$ -- just like the Mac converts
stories.
I simply find it hard to imagine thar organizations would convert from
Win to Lin. In this Win-centric world, those who choose open source
(either conversion or start up) are likely to have weighed the options
quite carefully.
But Linux is communism, right? And Linux works (much more so than e.g. Microsoft works), therefore communism works too. Now that's logic! Besides, in theory, theory and practice are the same.
I've just installed NetBSD+Apache on a 33Mhz 486 laptop with 8MB RAM. I did
recompile the kernel on another machine, though. This was essential
because the generic laptop kernel was taking too much memory. The end
result is nice and quite smooth.
Of course there are lighter webservers such as Boa, but I needed PHP,
and the Apache process is taking less than a megabyte of memory.

Um, remember that in Europe, billion means 10^12. That's THz for the
prefix freaks.
(Considering that bi means two, billion = million^2 makes a lot of
sense. Or can someone explain where the two is in the American billion?)

The same applies to several other products. Like, the Darwin streaming
server is opensourced, but there aren't players for all the available
codecs for Unix. (The MPlayer Sorenson 3 isn't quite ready yet.)

There must be a good reason for this. Look: Linux is a server OS. Windows
and MacOS are desktop OSes. It's true because BillG and friends say so.
Keep things simple and don't mix up your servers and desktops.

Red was the color of the first LEDs, which is why it's still the cheapest (though marginally). Therefore they also have the longest development history. More importantly, long-wavelength semiconductors are usually more efficient -- not that this makes any difference in desktop systems though.
Slashdot has already covered Dasher but here
comes another application. It would be the perfect replacement for that
proprietary and poor handwriting recognition. It's notably faster too.
Computer evolution and Windows de-evolution are separate issues.

Do you PINE for the nice days when men were men and user real mail programs? :-)
CmdrTypo strikes again. It should of course read ".. convert from Lin to Win".

Looks like somebody forgot to patch the firewall. *ducks*
And when people start using Segway instead of walking or cycling, the population capable of using them will diminish exponentially.
Segway has hyperthreading! Wow, I gotta get one now! How many megahurts will it give you?
And every text they write is a valid Perl program.

Yeah, like having more hardware makes you more of a geek. Right. Isn't it more about how you use it?
Well, it did mention /bin.
