Lawyers - when they had one of their annual "How can we make even more money than we do now?" meetings. But seriously it dates back to the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act in the UK and for the latest developments in intellectual property there's WIPO.

And for those people who don't know what o-volving refers to hopefully this sentence will help out : "Among the many novel features to enhance the use of storage space were what Fuller called O-volving shelf containers, which were mounted on a continuous chain system behind a partition whereby the equivalent of an 18ft stack of shelves could be rotated electrically until the desired shelf levelled with the access hatch."

Yes - I remember reading a story about a person who lived in a round house getting a wall to wall wardrobe. They were told it'd take only two days - ended up taking two weeks!

If you read that seriously it's you who should get a life. Some company's have morals, some respect the law, some realise that making money in the short term isn't necessarily linked to long-term growth. "Any coporate stragegy involved making as much money as possible" - oh so Enron and all the other companies that go bust were doing that were they? There are plenty of businesses run just because the person likes what they're doing and not because they're purely interested in profits!

I agree - I can think of far worse nightmare scenarios than - our company ordered a computer and it arrived on it side. On the "it might be important to their business point" there was a cse years ago in the UK of a company that successfully won an insurance claim for loss of business with the Royal Mail for millions of pounds because a few CDs came snapped in two & unusuable.

So what new term are you going to coin to replace M$ then? Personally I think it's a very good way of summing up their corporate strategy. ;o)

Can't the same techniques that prevent people deep-linking to pictures be applied here? Geocities has a script running that prevents people following deep-links to certain files because they end up paying for the bandwidth and don't receive advertising revenue for it.

  15. coprighted information on Alternatives to the CBDTPA? · · Score: 2

detect peopke who..." distribute copyrighted information? " - this is illegal already and needs no further legislation. The music companies have already resulted in the takedown of many sites already. What's needed is not better legislation but better detection. However this is difficult as sometimes copyrighted information is under permission to be used. Efforts seem to concentrate more on high profile things like software piracy and music piracy than things like websites copying bits of content from each other without permission.
