Explain WHY those $499 computers are so cheap. Any computer made that cheap is going to be rather slow, and use the cheapest parts possible. It's not uncommon for such systems to break down repeatedly in the first few months.
A 486 is hardly a heat sensitive piece of hardware. Hell, many of them didnt even bother with heatsinks. If you can get your 486 to overheat, take it out of the oven.
