Taco said on Screensavers that modifications to the moderation system were underway. No public mention of CSS support even though that is probably an easier thing to do.
...it was product activation that pushed me away from windows
What he said. I'm running a registered copy of W2K Pro even though I had the option of XP Pro two years ago. The concept of activation (hardware checking) was just too annoying as I knew I'd be swapping video cards.
My next computer will be dual-boot with Linux as the default OS for web stuff and email.
I don't doubt open source will dominate in many areas, but I doubt it will overtake Microsoft anytime soon unless there's a major shift torward software compatibility and enhanced intuitiveness for Windows users.
The only company that could realisically challenge Microsoft is Google. MS has the war chest but Google has the hearts and minds. They won't be making any rash moves, they'll be slowly improving.
Goodwill-wise, MS scores about a 4 while Google is approximately 9. People really respect honesty and no-nonsense, that's where Google really shines.
They've always known it, and that's how they've gotten as far as they have
Microsoft got to where they are by providing easy-to-use and inexpensive (relatively speaking) software for business. This was a revolution.
The next revolution is about to happen as people (not you or me, we're ahead on the curve) become disillusioned and want alternatives. It's starting now with Firefox and the general public is becoming more familiar with the internet.
It might just be that Microsoft has seen this coming. It is a natural progression after all. MS could adapt but they'd have to compete or cooperate with disparate, individual Linux developers worldwide. That doesn't fit well with their current way of doing business.
If the sleeping giant that is America's small business community goes for Linux (possibly as a result of being introduced to the open source concept by Firefox), Bill has a really big problem on his hands.
Because she's there when you need her. I've never had a private secretary, but shared experience is that they are worth at least double what they are usually paid.
This is neat, but what is the minimum cost for a setup? All kinds of nifty communication technologies have been envisioned, but the cost and compatibility is always the deal-breaker.
Often the cost of upkeep on systems exceeds their actual worth.
The "known knowns" crap has nothing to do with engineering. It came from him being unwilling to act like a total fucking moron, like so many other politicians feel the need to do.
I'd pay five bucks to see that. Hell, even seeing Bush with attitude crossed arms and his posse behind would be cool. Not that I'm going to be voting or anything.
Labeling something "beta" almost indefinitely should not be a get-out-of-jail-free card. It seems to me that once a product is in fairly widespread use -- once a product has a marketing plan behind it -- saying "no fair, it's a beta!" is a little disingenuous.
Agreed, maybe Google is laurel resting in the wake of the IPO.
Do you remember web searching prior-Google? I used to take pride in knowing the Hotbot and AltaVista switches (and nand not) but Google's 1998 blew all that away. That level of knowledge was no longer necessary. There's probably a lesson in there somewhere.
The solution isn't a total conversion to communism or socialism...
What is often missed with meritocracy-based economic theories is the fact that machines are replacing humans. Not just robots in factories, software and computers are deplacing thinking jobs.
The "baby-boomers" basically structured American society as it exists today. Why do big companies need 25 vice-presidents? It's mutual ego-building.
The American economic system has gravitated towards the boomers (ironically not those that fought and died in WW2) and they have gotten fat and lazy.
It's time for a shake-up, reality check, whatever you want to call it.
I don't know how to teach these vital things. But video gaming, a.k.a. "simulating", in a controlled and otherwise-harmless enviroment, is the best guess I've got
I said something similar here a couple of days ago but my focus was engineering education.
Kids learn amazingly fast once you can engage their brains. Much of what is taught is just rote and a reason to keep those damn kids off my lawn until they are 18. Then the bastards piss on my fence.
I say we (US Tax payers) Give Burt Rutan 500 Million (the cost of a *one* shuttle mission) and stand back..
Count me in on that, I have a few dozen engineering friends that would love to get involved. 3 Canadians, 5 Americans, 4 Indians, 2 New Zealanders, 2 Australians, etc.
All are top in their fields and would be in the rocket propulsion department (piping to the engines).
Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has not heart; and any man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains. -Sir Winston Churchill.
Churchill was referring to generations that existed at his time. I'm guessing that this is where the "don't trust anyone over 30" slogan came from (was it Timothy Leary?)

Ewww... does it at least come in a plastic baggie?
Yeah. But it comes from Abby Normal.
One of the coolest things about Apple is the OS names: Tiger, Panther, Jaguar.
On the other hand, some might say they're pussy-like and Velocipenguins are much more scary, faster and sexier.
Nice to see that Canada has the balls to stand up the the USA.
They must also be fairly large, as we all know that cold causes shrinkage.
The terrorists will not scare the United States as it did Spain, the Phillippines and other countries
Well said. Also remember that other countries' security services and spies are actively involved.

But what do I know?

It was before my time, but selective lighting on TV might have influenced the Kennedy/Nixon results in 1960.
I seem to remember when pointing became a bad thing. This is why we now see awkward hand/finger positions and weird flinging of digits.
Safe nukes (employ ex-sub engineers as operators at $120K/yr and run by military rules) are the best option in the long run.
Short run, we have lots of alternatives.

There must be a typo in there somewhere.

I didn't see this on Compuserve in 1993, so it is false. Faker!
Dammit, I'm older than it is. Mumble

Screw that, I want a free Ipod.

If you're making $70K/year you are probably one of the Slashdot elite. Don't expect too many sympathies from the proles.

The quote does seem to be valid though.
